Saluki are FANTASTIC with young children. Very emotionally intelligent, thoughtful & gentle creatures.
@samhartford86774 жыл бұрын
I think the same. If you can bring up a saluki that does not destroy your home regularly, you can bring up a child. As in the saluki needs the same as a child: room to be itself but the discipline and the investment to express themselves. If you take the saluki out, you take the child out to engage in things they enjoy. If you understand and know how to discipline the saluki's temperament, you understand and know how to discipline that child's temperament. Basically, they are at the same intellectual level.

These dogs have a mysterious heir about them, almost like something out of a storybook, They've always fascinated me. The Saluki is to the Dog world as the Arabian is to the horse world. They both posses a unique physique, amazing speed, and both hail from the desert.

Pure grace and beauty! Hahaa, love them! I helped a friend find a dog for a pet some years ago. She fell in love with a black and tan Saluki that had been thrown away. Her husband said he would leave her if she brought a dog home. He was scared stiff of dogs. She took this beautiful Saluki home, anyway. For 1 1/2 weeks the husband sulked big time. But then one morning this lovely Saluki female went upstairs and put her head onto his pillow. I hadn't seen them for a months after the dog went home. And i worried. Next thing i know, the wife is telling me after this beautiful girl layed her head on the pillow, her husband fell in love with her and adores this beautiful, and very funny, Saluki girl, saying he's never been so happy. Our first family pet dog was a whippet/saluki mix. So beautiful, but boy was she a hunter! She ran and moved like the wind. Never listened when off leash, so we had to go into large, safe fields to let her off. She needed a lot of exercise. Our next little treasure was a tiny whippet. He was my best friend ever! So polite and gentle. Didn't need much exercise, and was super easy. He loved going out in the car. We miss him every, single day. Now we have long dogs: mainly whippet, crossed with greyhound and saluki. They are gorgeous, with the female having some saluki looks. They have bionic sight, hearing and nose with everything a mile off, (can't sneak a quiet snack in another part of the house without them springing to life, lol), and hunt like the wind (but only in gesture), and in short bursts. They need far, far less exercise, and are extremely cute and loving, as well as majestic. There is a female saluki that goes for a gentle walk with her young human brother every day along a country, but faily busy road, and she walks by his side, beautifully. Beautiful dogs if you know how to treat sighthounds, and the differences between them.

There's something about the Desert that creates such streamline animals with floaty movements. Perhaps it's the very lack of water that inspires animals to have such liquidity in motion.The saluki is to the dog world as the Arabian is to the horse world.

Been "in" sighthounds for near 50 years, associated with or owned Salukis for 40. If you have a single one as a pet they can easily be trained to be off lead. Not near busy roads, etc. and they do tend to be a little independent while off lead but ours never gets "out of sight". She races around having great fun but is constantly looking back to keep us in her line of sight. We take her along bush walking tracks and she loves it. More to the point is that YOU have to have the temperament to be compatible with this unique breed. If you are a dominating type that trains a dog with a "gruff" command voice like you might a breed like a Staffie, then don't think about a Saluki. They are your equal and they take "suggestions", NOT commands.
@samhartford86774 жыл бұрын
Which is pretty intelligent of you. My friend has them, I take them on walks once in a while because she's been sick for three years. A saluki and two whippets - they've taken me, a regular adult, down off my feet twice. I mean they are well trained and I can control them without ease normally (as you can a pack of hounds), except when there is a squirrel, a city rabbit or a poodle on a long leash/free. The poodles have been the lethal ones (as I can anticipate that the prey is going to flee and I can prepare myself for the six-pod jump). Suddenly poodles flee: Flat on my stomach or back - with one swoop of three slender behind legs bouncing off together at the same time. When they hunt, they hunt. Nothing to do about it.

I might have to disagree there, due to the Saluki's strong prey drive and disregard for all other moving threats. If you take your Saluki mountain biking while it's on leash, and it sees something it wants to hunt, it WILL...and you will crash. If the Saluki is off least while you are mountain biking, you may lose it...or it may suddenly change course and you will hit it or another biker may hit it. Human and dog both get hurt.

As with all sighthounds quiet and gentle in the house and contrary to this video theyd be great with kids. But ferocious on the course. Most sighthounds are fine with a hour a day excercise provided they get to sprint full speed. I think these have a little more stamina than greyhounds or whippets tend too. But there a seoius flight risk with any small animals and potentially anything that acts like prey.

@A21twentyone4 жыл бұрын
@@missflite74 Consider the Aidi (the Atlas shepherd). It's main function is a flock guardian dog but the breed also has amazing scent and is fierce. People used it for hundreds if not thousands of years as a guard dog, for hunting and for herding... I would just advise you to do your research well since the breed is very rare.
@titanhound66714 жыл бұрын
Yep the AIDI is a great flock guardian They're at the tibetan mastiff level of guard abilities while being somewhat more responsive to their handler The breed being developped naturally has an excellent health for it's size Training them can be challenging but overall you'd only want one if you live somewhere rural Don't get one if what you want a herding dog A pack of two or three will keep any wild predator at bay but they won't be good at herding your livestock

Being prone to heart cancer, the last thing you want to do is get them fixed, except in extenuating circumstances. Ovary sparing spay and vasectomy would the best desexing options. The hormones remain, but they can't reproduce, in the event that an accident occurs.

Hey Zeke, would be great if you did a series on unlikely guard dogs. My family needs a good emotional support guard dog who is very friendly and capable. Currently our female Pitbull has that. She is super sweet but a great deterrent for a unmarried mommy living in the hood. 😂👍👌 After her...I’ve been eying to Doberman. My lil men will be older...been also thinking of standard poodle, a afghan hound, etc BUT I don’t want to get one that can’t guard. I’m sure you have these connections....this is perhaps a matchmaking bloodline thing...I’m sure you know of some friendly but capable poodles and afghans etc. So it would be so cool if you spent your time with these breeders who are breeding these dogs for untraditional roles. Frankly pitbulls are so perfect for my family needs but I’d enjoy such a series.
