2 things: 1) Why not approach from starboard to be in the lee of the swell 2) If there's doubt the cable eye will fit through the hawse pipe send the cable with 20 ft (?) of 1 1/2" chain shackled to the end. That should be enough for them to get it to the bit. 3) Compressed air or powder line gun. Send them that baby from 30 yards out Okay, that's 3. 12 years ABS towing fuel oil out of NYC, which more than once were sent to lasso a barge adrift. My first capt was a former salvage guy, and he told us a lot of lies, and taught us to tie a bowline in a parted 4" wire. It's about a 4 foot eye, we captured the thimble tite to the end with a couple of Crosby clamps and were good to go. It made a real nice proper eye, and the bend just cinched itself into a solid knot When we limped into Norfolk with a new spool waiting the old timer running the picker pulling the wire off our winch said, "Looks like there's an old salvage man aboard" and had one of his men burn off the eye and hang it on the side of the shed. No lie👍

This is a very good video, of a job which I performed many times previously , on the Irving Cedar, Irving Miami , and many anchor handling tugs. I noticed a few items which occur frequently on many tow boat back decks .Crew members stepping out from the crashrail/bulwarks/barrier while a loaded wire is lying on deck, and hard hats failing off , where a chin strap strap can prevevt that occurrence, No matter how small a complaint may be, by solving it could save a life

@@JanDootjes Phew thats a fair sized crew, most UK AHTS (which basically do the same thing plus extra) run with Master, mate and second mate. Chief engineer and second engineer, Cook and three deck hands (AB's / OS's) + extra engineer and one or two deckhands if working anchors / towing. Some may have a cadet onboard as well. Your extra hands sound very useful if expensive and that's the problem - long may your owners pay for them as well (it is their profit after all)

What is the square hatch in the tug's deck just forward of the fairlead? Did the cover-plate come loose? Looks like a real danger to the crew working the deck
@JanDootjes5 жыл бұрын
In that space is a strong point welded. That's where a pulley is connected so you can connect a gogwire to it to hold the tow wire between the cargorails.

That cargo vessel lost propulsion and was drifting away. In the tugboat community we call it an 'Salvage operation' since it wasn't a pre-planned tow job.

I had the same thought. Position the tug down-wind and down-swell of the ship. The ship drops a line with floats into the water and the tug retrieves it.

When the tug hand ran to catch the monkey's fist thrown from the carrier, he was risking his very life to grab aline that should have been thrown correctly in the first place making the retrieve the line to throw it again would have been the appropriate action here. I thought every ship today of a minimum tonnage had a line launcher in a locker somewhere as coast guard required equipment?
