When I was an apprentice tech in the 60's I bought my first car , a Renault Dauphine with a blown engine £10 , whizzed across to Silverlake and removed an engine from a wrecked Dauphine , another tenner . Happy days . In those days the cars were stacked in a muddy field , always good to see a company develop into what we see today amazing !

i used to work at silverlakes and in the depollution side of things what is done is all cars that go to the salvage side all liquids are kept in the cars but all breakers/scrappers have all there liquids taken out so if you need a fuel tank you have to get 1 before it gets depolluted as the tank is pierced with a vacuum steak to remove it with coolant its drained the same way oil is done then bottom hose is cut and with air con its de gassed and then a pipe is cut to be safe of pollution i hope this helps with you query :p ps i worked there for 3 years and enjoyed every minute of it

Amazing place. I have spent many happy hours in scrapyards (I know you call them salvage yards nowadays) and love to see them. I have to admire how well organised this yard is. As an Engineer and Mechanic, it is very well organised. I'm amazed how little damage some of these cars had to end up in a salvage yard. That's not recycling. What Rob and Chris do, and many others, is true recycling.

Back in the mid-1980's when Rob was still in short trousers, I seemed to spend most of my weekends climbing to the top of a teetering stack of scrap cars in a muddy and oily breaker's yard, searching for yet another part to keep my banger on the road. I used to think to myself "there's serious money in this game if you organised it right". That's the kind of set up I used to imagine. That warehouse is better than most main dealer parts departments I've been in over the years. Yes please to a return visit Rob. I'd really like to see a start to finish video of a vehicle being dismantled and how they check and catalogue all the recovered parts.

I remember going to a scrap yard with my mate , filling my pockets with light bulbs for his Triumph Dolomite and anything else you could get in your pockets. I was with a work mate once, helping him get a part off of a Mk.2 Escort. Took 3 bloody hours, scraped knuckles, and the part wasn't even in the best condition. Scrappy asked stupid money for it, knowing we'd spent so much time getting it off, that my mate wasn't just going to leave it behind ! Great video, Rob. Sadly for me, I was just too excited to watch it, as I normally watch your videos during Corrie or Emmerdale !! Never mind. Keep 'em coming !

That yard at Silverlake reminds me of a yard I often visited (and is still there) in Wokingham, it’s called A1 car spares, love that place, you take a hi-vis and walk around and there is a guy with a forklift truck driving round, you can ask him to get a car down for you and then they leave you to your own leisure to remove parts off the cars yourself…. Literally love it, don’t know of any other places that let you do that….. might be worth a trip Rob

The old Jag is a pre xJ6 model from the 1960s Rob. One of the numerous Mk 2 based variants of Jaguar / Daimler models they created by changing the front and rear panels of the base design. That place looks amazing, like a well stocked supermarket !! Sadly today, the cost of replacing complex electronics, SRS systems and the construction methods and materials is critical to insurers. The way any impact affects the whole modern bodyshell, often makes repair uneconomical. What may seem like superficial impact damage at first look, can travel through the shell and break joints if it's been hit on a critical point. I remember doing insurance inspections on such as Sierra and Mondeo models. A hard front or rear impact on the chassis would often travel and bend the floor pan and transmission tunnel, well away from the main damage point.

As i have said before when I lived in Southampton I did visit the yard a few times. It has expanded since then. Just up the road Ford used to build the Transit, moved out about 15 years ago I think. If there was a defect in a body assembly they would be taken to a metal recycling yard in the city, they were not allowed to sell any part of the bodies. I don't know if Silverlake have a contract with the docks for any casualties when loading on to the ships, it is rare but accidents do happen there. It would be Rangerovers and similar makes, could be why some if those cars are very new? Anyway that was a good video Rob thanks for posting it. I think it would be interesting to see the fluid removal process at some point in the future but only if you are going there to collect some parts. Once again Rob thanks. 👍👍

@frog- eye Couldn't help noticing your ID thing. I had one of them in old English white when I was 20 and it then was 21. Explaining to the kids that it used to be a different world then and this car had no door handles so to get in you slid the window open from outside, reached in and lifted the door handle. Likewise having a boot with no boot lid was also something they struggled with but to be fair so did I. What fun though, even with an 850cc engine, it was like a two seater go-kart.

@@andrzejs7335 Yes I understand that, but I'm guessing somebody has already done a calculation as to what the car is worth as a whole and in parts, so if it doesn't sell it gets broken for parts?

Yes it would be interesting to see a car come in for breaking and see the complete process it goes through. Good to see a well run site.👍🏽😎

an average car takes around 1-3 days pending on size of car i stripped a model x in 2.5 days from complete to bare shell and a classic mini in 1-5 days all cars are stripped by 1 person but there are atleast 8 ramps for stripping and 6 for depollution

Love Silverlake, one of my local breakers yards, have been there a few times. I'm surprised you didn't take the truck down there and have a cheeky bid on a little something.

Saw the previous vid you did Rob and that was certainly a taster for this one. Really good that you decided to go again as it's certainly an eye opener the way everything is laid out.

That is absolutely amazing. Some bargains to be had there for sure. Half the cars look undamaged structurally. Some outfit and organisation. Will actually keep these guys in mind for any bits I might need

Absolutely amazing place - unbelievable to think that all those motors outside have been involved in big accidents!! It’s no wonder our car insurance is what it is!! Total credit to the owners of the place, they sure run a tidy, impressive set up. Wow, I’m quite overwhelmed.

It's been a while since I was at a scrap yard. Last one I went to was in a muddy field and the cars were stacked 2 sometimes 3 high on each other. Interesting watch.

Rob the Transit bodies I mentioned in my previous comment were scrap we asked if we could buy one and that's when they said they couldn't be sold. They were at a different yard (600 Group) on the other side of the city, probably still there (the yard) even though it was a few decades ago that we went there. It was pure speculation on my part that Silverlake might have a similar sort of contract with Southampton port to collect any salvage/accident damaged vehicles from them. I hope that clears up any confusion Rob? No worries mate. 👍 👍

You should get yourself a drone for sites like that, it would make fantastic video, great video. Gone are the days when the cars sit on top of each other, balancing, and you are knee deep in mud. What a change this industry has had.
