Trusty Rusty trailer was the one Zach helped you with a few years back. Nothing like having home grown timber to use. Everything in the woods is nice and green from the rain. It will be good to have safe solid boards on the trailers.

A 5/50 mixture of fuel oil and used motor oil mopped on the decking boards will keep them from rotting out. It'll take time soak in the fresh cut.

Friend of mine "painted" his white oak trailer deck boards with used motor oil. Supposed to work better than solvent based waterproofing materials and the price is right.

It does a great job and lasts for years, dilute with petrol.

Oil does work good just be careful where you park because for a month or so it will drip oil in a driveway

Clearing the space around the tree before you cut it is a great safety step. My dad used to tell me that all the time but I usually ignored it. One day I cut a tree about twice the size the one you cut here and tripped up in vines. I was still not able to get up yet when the tree flopped over to the opposite side from where I was scrambling from. If it flopped the other way I would be squashed.

Nice little episode of Chris taking down a log tree to fix his trailer and some quick necessary maintenance on his front loader. Kinda cool we got some bonus footage of him at the sawmill getting those 0lanks cut. The planks shouldn't need a lot of curing to take care of shrinkage because it was already dead so it's moisture content will be a whole lot less that a live tree would have.

Yes,White Oak for trailer beds as far as this 71yo can remember. I owned a utility trailer that the entire bed was made from White Oak. It was heavy but could haul anything you loaded on it.

Whenever you take out any large enough oak trees on a job, you should keep the logs. If you do not need boards, you could have them milled into 10x10s, or whatever size are used in those mats you use in swamps. Then have them pinned together to make more mats.

I also have some white oak trees (5) that I need to take down to complete a landscaping project on my property amd will saw them for trailer decking. If I could get 100 logs they wouldn't last long. They would go for trailer decking very fast.

You may want to sticker those boards. This humidity lately will make them mold rather quickly. I still like installing them green so you have a gap once dry to keep dirt and water off of them. Maybe this makes them last longer?

With all the clearing you do you should be able to find another white oak log or two to replace the decking on your trailer easily.

White oak good hardwood and durable for trailer decking - should last a minute or two. Nice felling action. Lovely cabin in the background. And oh it is wet - wonder you are not all floating out to sea :)

Been trying to dredge a pond that I have to drive into. Can't get 3 dry days in a row since March.

There is a pound a board foot difference between oak and pine. 2.5 for pine 3.5 for oak. Board foot is inch thick by foot square. So your trailer is gonna pick up weight. But ir will last. White oak is closed pore. Whiskey barrels and ships. Water tight and air tight. Hard maple is most dense. By 2 or 3 tenths. White oak don't split along the grain like most wood. I am certified hardwood inspector. Graded semi load a day. For 22 years. AFTER it drys a month. Spray it down with some good bug spray.

Do you have Black Walnut trees on the eastern side of the state??? Here in Lenoir, we have many large walnuts with one that was struck by lightning back in the 90's when the tree was young. Now the base is roughly 100 inches and from what I've been told it'll make beautiful lumber due to that lightning strike!!! Wish you were closer cause we just took down a very large oak at mommas and we took down one roughly the sixe you did, would happily give you both 🙂 Nice job sir!!!

Old farmer’s trick…paint the boards with mixture of 50% diesel / 50% old motor oil. They will last much longer.

Chris, boards on the deck of a trailer ***DON'T*** have to be screwed down to the trailer frame. Think about it, the boards are just there for a place to put stuff and to distribute the weight of the load downward to the trailer frame. People (generally) don't use deck boards to prevent things from lifting upwards. For a trailer deck all that's needed are a few thin strips of metal across the trailer to keep the boards from lifting/flying off. Without a million screws the boards split less and can gradually shrink as the naturally dry out. I've seen too many videos of guys putting a million screws they don't need.

The mini excavator really does a good job taking those boards off. You just have to grind the screws off when you’re done.
