I live in South Carolina, was born and raised in Ohio by two Tarheels, I learned to garden very young but for the life of me i cannot get anything of substance to grow here. So last year because you inspired me i bought a small greenhouse and this year i had cherry tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and squash. Now i know what I’m doing because of you I’m going to attempt to build a larger greenhouse from pallets and i must say this my poor husband is one of those guys that don’t know a flat head from a Phillips head, so I’m attempting this as boss and him as my employee and we are both in our 60’s but you two are so inspiring. I love your videos, your love for the land, the fact that you don’t cheat or take shortcuts and your love for each other. Thank you for being here and inspiring this old lady to get off the couch and enjoy a little life.

Hi Guys, I suspect that you will find that the block walls are going to be very cold in the winter. You might consider installing some external insulation (similar to foam board but made for the purpose) over the exterior followed by some kind of siding. That way you will still have the benefit of the thermal mass but without the massive heat loss from the low R-value block and concrete. Otherwise it looks great! All the best from California! 🧡

@28:29 She explains your concerns.
@MomoBar91Ай бұрын
Northern Europe here and I would do the same. Our houses are often built similar to the small wall they made and we put insulation on the outside and the inside. For a seedling room one would properly be enough, but I think is definitly needed in this cold climate and it´s properly cheaper in the long run regarding the costs to heat the room.
@deanhatch4179Ай бұрын
@@EastRiverHomesteadshe did explain thermal mass, unfortunately in cold climates it must be very well insulated to work. That uninsulated exposed wall will suck the heat right out of that room, just like leaving the windows open.
@CorrectHorse126Ай бұрын
Thermal mass is like a big rainwater tank - it's the right solution for storage if the source of the heat/water is intermittent, like rain is intermittent water or a wood stove is intermittent heat. But neither thing is any use if your nice storage just leaks straight to the outside!

4:32 The second block is upside down, but it looked like the masonry crew laid them the right way up. You needed to start at the corners and the building, then pull a string to fill-in the blocks in the middle. You did not have to do each core, start the coroners and then every fourth core is ok. It came out looking good.

It's looking great. Great job with the masonry. If you want to use the block wall as a heat mass, you'll need to put foan board insulation on the outside. That will stop thermal bridging. Otherwise, you'll lose all your heat in the walls.

Without putting foam insulation or something on the outside of that concrete block wall, all the heat will get sucked out of that building unless you're going to burn 20 cords of wood non-stop just to heat that space. Even then it will be impossible to keep the temps throughout the space uniform. You've simply got to insulate the outside of that wall...do it now as it will be harder to retrofit later!
@daves4391Ай бұрын
I will agree with that comment. Concrete block exposed to extreme cold weather will never warm up. Great work and tremendous courage to take this on.
@carolewarner101Ай бұрын
@@daves4391 All you gotta do is look at the way their pet door has a bunch of ice all over it in the winter even though they keep their house over 80 degrees inside. Maybe put 2 layers of 3" foam board with staggered, taped seams onto the outside of the block wall using construction adhesive (making sure it's not the kind that will melt the foam) and then make a set of "storm windows" to add to the outside over double pane windows for added insulation, or at least put in heavy duty insulated curtains for when the sun isn't out (I'd do both).
@revens-j3kАй бұрын
I agree, block stays cold,it would almost be worth taking it down, ouch but it isn't worth the chill in a seed room.They did a really good job though for first timers.
@carolewarner101Ай бұрын
@@revens-j3k If they have a thick enough close cell foam thermal break on the outside of it, it actually could act as thermal mass inside once it's heated up. Unfortunately, there's no insulation under the slab for the room either, so even though they're running their radiant floor heat in there, that too will suck out a LOT of heat given the climate.

In the last three weeks, I have seen two videos of KZbinrs that were doing the same kind of thing and who were lucky they could make it to the emergency room. Please be careful when using an angle grinder and use all precautions. FYI. the videos were on the channels "hometown acres" and "this off grid life" Both ended up with a serious wound to their abdomen and could also have lost partial use of their arm or bled out. Since you are a lot farther from medical help things could easily go even worse for you. Please be careful.

Just watched you two put up your old hoop house and start your garden at your old cabin. The comparison of all the intense physical labor to your new garden is astounding. You did a lot of hard work both places, but having your tractor now is such a game changer from the shoveling out all the rocky soil that you lined the outside of the hoop house , the top soil, the manure, spent barley, straw, Timothy hay….that was a lot!!!!!!!
