In light of your comment regarding hunting for a measuring tape, I highly recommend that you get either a large contractor tool belt and/or a heavy duty canvas tool bag and discipline yourself to always have it with you. You'll find it very time saving.

When I worked in a factory about the size of this one, all the foremen, and maintenance workers had mini bikes to save on walking long distances, and haul their tools etc. . I mentioned before the spiral ramp they had between floors, they went up those easily, just a thought for your walking long distances just to get a tool.

I ended up subscribing to your channel just for this building journey. I have zero interest in antiques per se (as far as decorations or whatever), but I restore vintage woodworking tools as a hobby so I appreciate when people put a genuine effort into breathing new life back into something old. Where I live doesn't really have an industrial history so there's nothing like this for me to get lost in. That's probably good for my marriage. Keep posting and don't worry about KZbin's algorithm, you don't work for them, do what brings you joy.

One small painting tip: use rosin paper or a drop cloth on top of or in place of the plastic. The plastic doesn’t absorb so you can end up tracking paint or slipping. Rosin paper isn’t too expensive and drop cloths are endlessly reusable.

I wouldn't ruin the toilets, they can all be refitted, and you can take the insides out and sell them separate! There are always ways to get around stupid laws. There are plenty of historic homes that have old plumbing and toilets etc. that can't get the fittings they would need where the home would be grandfathered in. In other words, most of the laws like that are for new builds, and these laws are all different in different areas. I wish I had a blue sink for my kitchen, and a lavender toilet and sink for my bathroom!

And bikes make short work of long walks. I find your project building so fascinating. I used to own a second hand store. I had to turn a big old building from early 1900s into my beautiful shop. The building was originally the communities ice house.. Old huge beams, sturdy floors, leaking roofs, old wiring..i empathise..if I was in your area, I'd for sure volunteer my time to lens a hand. I miss the work of reclaiming the old building. All the best..

You need an electric scooter! Not big. Not expensive. But way faster to get from one end of the building to the other. Regarding your table saw: The plug for 240v is different from the plug for 120v. One of the prongs is perpendicular to the other, so it won't go into a standard outlet. So... "if", your table saw is wired correctly... (meaning, nobody has screwed with it... big "if"), it's probably 120v. It's not really unusual for a heavy motor to take a few seconds to get going. If it was intended to run on 240v and you pluged it into 120v by mistake, it would most likely hardly run at all. Follow up: Make sure the plug and extension cord that you are using are at least 14-2, and 12-2 would be better. If the motor is being starved for amperage, that will also make it struggle to get going. For the future: When you have a more "permanent" work area, it may be possible to change the wiring on the motor so it will run on 240v. The advantages of doing so is that the motor will run more efficiently. When you double the voltage you only use half the amperage. Easy project to do, Google it, lots of examples. BUT... make sure you also change to the correct outlet and cord so there is no misunderstanding.

Nice re-use of the weathered wood -- though something from a mere 40 years ago isn't quite as quality as anything pre-WWII. When we took down our 1910 garage building, the long leaf pine boards still smelled very strongly of pine resin -- and drilling a hole through the stuff required diamond drill bits! Your project looks great, and it's wonderful that you have the sheer space to store things as you progress. We're just finishing up on our single-wall construction farmhouse after 15 years worth of effort -- but it would have gone a lot faster if we had possessed a warehouse space for storage.

The table saw motor should have a name plate with voltage and wiring specified. If it is already 120 volt you will have a starting winding which typically will have a starting switch and starting capacitor involved. The starting switch will change the motor winding from the starting winding to the running winding once it gets up to speed. It could be this switch or the starting capacitor. should be easy fixes if parts are available. Sometimes the switch can be repaired. There are ways to generate 3 phase power from single phase that might get your elevator usable, what a bonus if that could happen. It would be worthwhile to get some professional advice on that project. Good luck, wish I was around to help.
@mwatkins2464 Жыл бұрын
The start switch only turns power on and off and has nothing to do with start or run windings. If capacitor is bad he might can get it started by hand just to see if it will run. The on and off switch runs to the common and not the start windings. The capacitor which is more than likely a run capacitor will be wired to the start winding. I’ve worked a lot with all these components. Especially in hvacr

You're making good progress!! I think your cow head is actually a 1940s/50s poodle figurine. They are pretty malformed looking. Was thinking, you might want to set some of the sped up video to some of the free music available. I've done it a couple times, still getting the hang of it....trying to find copyright free music (without signing up to a site) is proving harder than I thought. Eventually you will want to invest in a $65 respirator (though I have found them at garage sales and such for under $20....might even have a spare I can send you, if I get digging in storage) It will only takes 13 of the $5 dust masks to pay for a brand new one @$65. Plus they go on sale sometimes. Trust me, it is a cheap investment in your health. I wish I started wearing them earlier in my career than I did. Now I have a type of asthma that makes me start hacking when exposed to a bit of fine dust, fiberglass insulation, etc. Feels like I'm coughing my lungs out and everything around me sort of fades out. Pretty dangerous when you're having to concentrate on being safe. THAT is one of the things that you're trying to avoid developing. They can be a pain, but your health is not replaceable. I'd be happy with rain...we're still in a a deepfreeze... -13F here today. That wood stepladder seems kinda sketchy...I've fallen off a 12' ladder before...was very lucky I only landed with some big bruises resulting. Was concerned there a few times when you were painting. My thinking focus on one thing at a time. I would focus on setting up the old plumbing store as your antique shop. Clean it up as best you can seal the roof fix the windows. Once you have that set up. Empty the rest of the building by removing garbage and selling contents. You could eventually set up the factory main floor as a trade Center or antique mall. Once you have some money flow from that decide what to do with the upper floors. Like you said it would be an awesome set up for loft apartments upstairs and eventually a nice marketplace on the main floor. Just some ideas.

BIG Question what is the actual OVERALL plan for ALL of the building? from a construction and recycling standpoint along with Design are your going to do a residence in it? or a venue location? sales location? depends alot of what needs to be done and what to look to keep possibly. Also I assume from listening to a few of the videos the location is somewhere in Illinois? depending on where you may need to be careful regarding what you do so the municipality doesnt hit you for freaking permits to demo or even sometimes board the windows. obviously they have not said anything about this. Also depending on what the use is you might be able to get construction loans for some things Sorry I am jazzed that you are doing this I have always wanted to similar but dont have the fortitude

The sprinkler system has to go. The inspector said it is not usable, so I am using it for scrap to pay for dumpsters. Anything I find that could conceivably have value goes into the auction contents area. I haven't thrown any toilets away yet. The weatherizing is happening, I just haven't posted those videos yet. Please don't worry. I have my priorities straight. Number one roof. Number two windows, number three gutters!!!
