Josiah Tejeros, 1 corinthian 18:1 was a translation by William Tyndale from latin to old english, against the orders of the Vatican. Mr. Tyndale believed parishioners should be able to read the holy book themselves. For that translation, mr. Tyndale was executed by the vatican. Or perhaps you would like further information, perhaps you’re quoting the king james holy bible. English christianity became as a result as king henry the VIII wanted rome to annul his marriage so he could get with anne boylen. Rome said no, so henry VIII separated english christianity from roman christianity and the church of england was founded, years later after many bibles were scribed eventual, after i believe 40 different versions, under king james the current book you quoted from came into existence. Or perhaps you would like to go further into the roots of your religion, why do you read so many names in your holy book are jewish, it’s based on the jewish torah. Or perhaps the root of christian theology, monotheism. The first known case of monotheism is egyptian based, there were two occasions when monotheism took hold. long before moses came into being. I’m not religious myself, and you can see how many of the other comments here echo the same, but I think we have to admit just how easy it is for humans now to be so godless. The extreme comfort of medical science, of modern safety and security apparatuses, etc. It’s all too easy now. That said, I think there is a lot you can learn about human nature, society, and many other topics from theological pursuits. I think these particular episodes are good and worthwhile.

Viscount Hutton . Yes, it’s as good a pursuit today as it was in early Paleolithic history to find answers to the whats and whys of life. Such things are all rooted in faith and belief, unproven theories. It’s easy to be godless, if you perceive god anthropomorphically. If you understand the root of religions you understand why god has been created in man’s image. It’s why so many are godless, they’ve been exposed to a faulty description of god. God is not human in my eyes, if not then what, if we are made in god’s image, then what is the similarity if god is not human, then consider what is your true image, don’t trust your eyes, if you are not the man in the mirror then what does your image look like, follow the logic if you can. It’s how i found a natural god. The logic I speak of is not what I’ve said, it’s where it takes you that i found amazing. I called it the yanassi theorem, named after someone who passed.

If you can't quite express the truth, can you say that you truly know it? I am not trying to be cute or gnomic here; I genuinely wonder if someone has grasped some form of knowledge if they cannot articulate it. It would seem to remain inchoate in that case. Moreover, if you can't be certain of what it is you grasp (reflected in an inability to express it), how can you know that it's true and that all the world's religions are false?

“The Truth is that which runs after Truth.” - Lacan “The Truth is that which makes a hole in knowledge.” - Theresa Giron, _Umbr(a)_ “Truth is only available from a partial (engaged in the struggle) position.” - Zizek I think the easiest way to think of this is that learning never finishes, there is no whole knowledge, no master who knows us. What we all know but can’t express I think is this-that there is no end to the new in life, which means things are open and we are free to participate in the shape of this world, which entails all sorts of terror like totalitarianism or fascism which can appear as projects of liberation to the sleepy. We are free, that’s what we all know but can’t quite express I think because freedom depends on structure and is therefore particular-but that crack in the particular which bars the particular from being universal is what’s universal. We are free but only through submission to an ethical structure-in Christianity that’s the story of Jesus and his resurrection. The Holy Spirit is the community of believers bound by love, by the Christian ethic of grounded groundlessness. We are alone with our freedom and must struggle to reconcile ourselves with difference and contradiction in our lives-where two ideas grind against one another in search of Truth that is the truth. To work through contradiction (tarry with the negative) is to be most alive, to participate in becoming, in the process of the dialectic.

None of these guys really answered the question. The bottom line is Christianity is an extension of the Hebrew tradition of blood sacrifice for sins. The Jews had multiple annual rituals of animal sacrifice to atone for their sins, because their God, the shared god of Jews and Christians, demanded it. Jesus as the son of God was the human sacrifice to atone for sins once and for all so you weren't doing this annually. Basically it's the religion of human sacrifice, represented by the pervasive use of the cross, the symbol of the murder weapon used to execute Jesus.

19:23 “If you find internal inconsistency then you haven’t found truth.” No. Christian truth is precisely about understanding that internal inconsistency is the Truth-as Truth in its purity is that which makes a hole in knowledge. Learning is never finished as truth is never whole-meaning continues to be written in the dialectical process. Paradoxically, reconciling oneself with this uncertainty/motion creates the ground upon which Christian believers stand-we are alone together with our freedom in the kingdom and most alive when we recognize the sovereign potential which flows through life eternal. I disagree with the host of this show, Philosophy means the search for knowledge, this means Philosophy does concern itself with the truth of such claims as Salvation. Even prior to Socrates, there were Philosophers who questioned religion, such as one who questioned the belief in the God's as; they were supposed to.represent all that was beautiful and good, but often did bad things and brought chaos to the world. It's no surprise than that, Logic the very language of modern science is Logic. What complicates things is well known theologians in Europe called themselves Christian Philosophers; when they were simply Apogists who did all they could to undermine the fact, humans can understand the Universe around us, and our place within it. By undermining Logic and Reason, these individuals asserted that faith is a viable means for.determing truth; which it isn't.

I just ran across this video today, and can't believe there are 19 seasons of this show. It's obvious religion was our early attempt to understand the world around us, given our limited understanding; it was a reasonable thing to do. However, as we have gained experience and knowledge, and even enhanced our senses with technology, we understand this best guess was simply that, a guess which was wrong.

You shouldn't have gone to protestant theologians for this series, catholic theology would have answers to these questions. I grew up catholic but I dont follow the religion and even with my 3rd grade religion classes I know that the reason for the inate sin in humanity is due to the fall from the garden of eden. After the fall,humans had the ability to make choices and could choose right from wrong, many times choosing wrong thus leading to sin. The crucification of Jesus is meant to save humanity from sin because Christianity comes from Judaism and in those times Jews sacrificed animals for forgiveness of sin. @jakobtarkus54954 жыл бұрын
You are certainly right when you say that the idea of Sin has unfortunately been misused in this way a lot. But I think the concept of sin as it comes across in parts of the video is much too narrow. The concept of sin in Christianity (especially Eastern Christianity, which in this respect is certainly closer to the original) must be seen in connection with the concept of the overall fallen (or broken) state of the world. Everyone who has observed or experienced the effects of suffering in the world will intuitively realise what is meant by this. "Sin" is simply that aspect of the overall fall which pertains to our own imperfect relationship to the world, to fellow humans and to ourself. (And no, no individualist agenda of self-realisation, or "success in life" will help you escape from eventually facing this situation.) What first sounds like a deeply pessimistic view, however, can indeed be a source of hope: what is fallen or broken can also rise or be mended again, and the Christian world view implies the conviction that this mending is indeed possible. In this respect, the concept of sin has in fact very positive implications.

We have evolved from primitive beginnings but can still act as a primitive animal in the way we treat each other. We have only to look at the exploitation, war and destruction which is part of our world. I don’t think that God the Father demanded the death of his Son to pay for our sin. I think the Son was incarnated to give us an example of how to live in love, for which Jesus was prepared to die. The resurrection was the Father giving His seal of approval and showing us that, paradoxically, what appeared to be death and failure was in fact Jesus’ glory and an example of how to live. “If I am lifted up I will draw all men to me” John 12:32

JOHN 8:21-24 21 Then Jesus said to them again, “I am going away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sins. Where I am going you cannot come.” 22 So the Jews said, “Since He says, ‘Where I am going you cannot come,’ will He kill Himself?” 23 And He said to them, “You are from beneath; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. 24 Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am, you will die in your sins.” Why is it that they “cannot” (John 8:21) go there as well? God is in heaven. Because God is holy, heaven is a holy place, and a holy place cannot contain sin. He was an embodiment of God's love for us and His mission was to teach us about God's love and how we should seek God within in us and love one another the way God loves us and He was crucified for it. That was the sacrifice, not for salvation but to risk his life in order to speak the truth for our benefit.

Hi Robert, there is no concept of salvation through any prophet or a saint in Islam. The humans are accountable to their own actions in hereafter (judgement day). Muslims believe in all prophets and the last prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, but there is direct salvation of an individual , not through any prophet. According to Islam, all human beings are born sin-free , pure. They get conditioned by the environment , they may abuse their free will and commit sin/crime in their lifetime. They will be granted numerous chances to compensate, repent, and ask forgiveness or they continue to commit crimes and corruptions and die without any repentance. according to Islam, there is judgement day and they will be accountable to their actions (sins/crimes and corruptions) and it will be upon God who will either set them free or announce punishment. There are no concept of atonement in Islam either. Prophets /Human beings are not supposed to bear the consequences of other's actions , as per Islam.

Sin is an intimidating word for our naive behavior. We just need to understand how to control our emotions. Yoga is very effective in that... Yoga says: Your true SELF is God. You just have to drop your chronic thinking - literally. Consciousness is God. Every living being is a reflection of God in an imperfect mirror Read "be as you are" by David Goodman

I couldn't watch anymore after about 2/3rds of this video. No one addressed the two most important questions: 1) Where's the PROOF of a god? And... 2) Why would an all-powerful, all-loving god create beings (humanity) that aren't exactly in accordance with "his" wishes? Why these concepts of "sin," "sacrifice," and "redemption?" Couldn't god have avoided all this suffering by his creations in the first place? Occam's Razor...

If you wish a simplified way to look at it is: if there is a god, he could have created a being that did only his will. That is true. Much like our ability to create machines and robots to do what we wish. However he chose to create a being with consciousness and free will, with an ability to freely discern to do as god wishes or not to do as he wishes. In other words he made humans with the ability chose to live a good life without doing physical, social or phycological harm to others or to themselves, or in contrast, to live a life of debauchery with all manner of societal misdeeds possible. Or a mixture of both. He left it up to us to chose.
@empyrean97122 жыл бұрын
If you accept the traditional notion of a God then he is omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent. Meaning he is absolute and sovereign in thoughts and deeds. It’s why humans have free will and can make decisions. Are decision was to disobey God and so we face the consequences but God offered his son as a living sacrifice. The Gospel is that Jesus Christ came to earth, lived the life we should have lived and died the death we should have died.

The views of your interlocutors are not mainstream American Christianity. Go interview some evangelical pastors or scholars and you'll get a different, less…reasonable…story. For example, explore Calvinism, which is what a large number (30%?) of American Christians affirm. I think all the stories fall apart rather quickly and it's not simple pluralism. Certain denominations truly believe that Catholics, Anglicans, etc are all going to hell!

Christians used to believe in a static existance, until science abandoned this notion. God suposidly created the universe and humanity, and due to knowing everything, could have made us without sin. The idea of punishing future generations for the sins of Adam and Eve, just as is claimed about the future generations of many who God punished in the Bible. The surrender the woman spoke of, is the same letting.go.of self derived, morality, logic and reason, etc, that cults brainwash followers into. The religious view isn't reasonable, the concept.of sin is madness.

In Christian tradition God created man sinless and blameless it was our free will as free agents that sin entered the world. It’s why this world is purgatory and heaven is with God and hell is without him.

Even Buddhism teach you that all creatures suffer from ignorance, lust, and pride (moha, dosa, and lobha), so you need to work out your own liberation through a series of Buddhist practice. No one saves you from your own karmic suffering.

@@WillyIlluminatoz Buddhism and Sikhism came out of Hinduism which is a “way of life” rather than a religion. Also the reason it’s one of the oldest spiritual traditions turned religion on earth. Human asceticism is just that “human” and we understand humans to be fallible creatures regardless of advanced teachings, study, practice, Knowledge. All human misgivings come out of the heart and that’s something we can never internally transform without the deliverance of a sovereign incorporeal God.

Illogical, or the usual bending of the story to fit it’s illogical nature. Salvation is the saving of one’s soul so they could enter the kingdom of heaven, would that be the same person who has been going to church for years? One would think, as a church goer they wouldn’t need saving, as would already be fine. Personally, one, i think The kingdom heaven is a made up word meant to manipulate a less learnt people. Two, the only salvation i believe is needed is the forgoing of logical sense by each religious practitioner, as each surely is allowing a historical comic book rule their lives. They should ask god to forgive their misuse of intelligence.
@empyrean97122 жыл бұрын
I highly suggest you research and study the doctrine of soteriology. Salvation in the Christian tradition is understood that we are fallible beings in this realm of purgatory and unless we accept God’s life preserver ring we’re all deserving of damnation. Having a body benefits you in two aspects, one to survive here on earth, two, to engage in living, growing and experiencing life with many memories.
