when hamilton and washington read the speech together it's an actual excerpt from washington's farewell address to the nation. hamilton speaks it because he wrote it, and washington sings it because he delivered it. it's a nice touch

Since Washington was the first president, he started the tradition that presidents only serve two terms. There were people who wanted him to continue and he probably could have continued getting reelected until he died. But he thought it would be bad for the country for people to be president for life. So he just quit after his second term.
@joanhall9381

That tradition lasted all the way to President Franklin Roosevelt. Roosevelt just kept on running and got elected four times. He died during his fourth term. After his death, we added it to the Constitution that presidents are limited to two terms.

I always tear up during this song (and a lot of Act 2) because by this time Washington had given 40 years of service to his country, and he was intelligent enough to know that if he didn't step down at that time, there were large groups of people that wanted him to be president for life - and he knew that would make the country he fought so hard for into an "elected monarchy", and they had fought for freedom, not that. So he stepped down and opened the presidency to new people - and he died 2 years later.

A few things about this song: Washington didn't _have_ a term limit. He established the Idea of not serving for life, notably making him different from a King and setting precedent for the 2 term limit and the peaceful transition of power. He also died only 2 and a half Years later at the age of 67 of a Lunginfection. I'd highly reccomend watching the version that the cast did at the white House shortly before Obamas end of Presidency. It was truly moving, not a dry eye in the house

There's a small extra bit of sadness to this moment, both for Washington and Hamilton. Poor George didn't get to spend much of that time at home that he was looking forward to, as he died only two years after stepping down. And for Hamilton, this was a pretty big loss that is kind of a big catalyst for everything going sideways, since the government no longer had Washington's wisdom keeping them all tethered to reality. And as far as I'm concerned, Washington was Hamilton's first major father figure after his real father walked out on Alex and his mother when he was a child, and the loss of Washington probably hit him hard and left him without a rock to cling to when things went south. (Not a spoiler because a) it's history, and b) Burr says in the beginning of the musical that he shoots Hamilton, so obviously something has to go wrong.)

Something not mentioned before from "One Lat Time." The section that begins "So, in reviewing the incidents of my administration...", through the point when the choir rejoins, is entirely adapted from Washington's actual resignation speech that Hamilton helped him write. LMM felt that those words were important to include in this point of the story, so he found a way.

as many have already said in the comments, there were no term limits back then. at this point, Washington was the first and only President and was trying to set a precedent that leaders of the United States do not become glorified elected monarchs (something they had just fought against). since he was the first actual elected leader of the United States, the song is about teaching the country to move on and understand why it's a good thing to elect a new leader, rather than keep the same one. he also just wanted to retire because he had been serving the country for so many years in one capacity or another, first as a general and then as the leader of the country. if you want to really get emotional, there's a video of Christopher Jackson and Lin Manuel Miranda + the cast singing this song at the White House right before Obama left office, and it's super emotional. you can see people in the audience and even the cast tearing up. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4eXhqN5ppeUsNU great reaction, as always, Sal ❤️

Washington really had been in government or the army off/on for 20 years or more. He loved his plantation, Mount Vernon. He was a farmer at heart. He really didn’t get much time to enjoy his retirement there, sadly. He served for two terms as President, some even wanted him to be king, which he said no to doing so. I think even if he had children, he would not have done so. He did have stepchildren and step grandchildren, so if he were a megalomaniac, he could have installed a dynasty through them or his siblings children.

With regard to Washington stepping down it probably helped that he didn’t have any biological children so there was never really any question of a political dynasty like what happened with Oliver Cromwell and the English Civil War- Cromwell served as protectorate for life and on his death his son tried to fill his shoes and failed and ultimately Charles II was invited to come back and restore the monarchy. Washington always knew someone else would have to succeed him and took steps to make the transition as painless as possible. A few presidents attempted (or at least seriously considered) running for a third term but the only one to ever do so was FDR.

Hamilton was called a monarchist because he believed that Washington should have a lifelong rule. Washington knew that the country he freed and ruled would need fresh new thinkers as it grew so he set the precedent that presidents could only run for 2 terms.

The Tony’s remembered, though 😊 Christopher Jackson (Washington) was nominated for best performance by a featured actor in a musical. As were Jonathan Groff (King George), and Daveed Diggs (Lafayette / Jefferson), who both had showier roles (plus the all-important humor when it comes to likability). Mr. Diggs took home the Tony. As did Leslie Odom, Jr., for best performance by an actor in a *leading* role, and Renée Elise Goldsberry (Angelica Schuyler), for featured actress. Philippa Soo (Eliza) was nominated for leading actress, but lost to the untouchable Cynthia Erivo for her performance as Celie in ‘The Color Purple’ revival. Lin Manuel was nominated for lead actor, but lost to co-star Leslie.

Another cute one is that Hamilton sings that one part in Helpless in that Ja Rule growl because in rehearsals Lin did it like that one time, it made Pippa giggle, so he kept it like that. And all of the super-fast rapping from Daveed - Lin was originally writing the lines at his own speed abilities and then 💡 - Daveed has skills - remembered that and was able to write those parts to match Daveed’s skillset.

For all his faults, Washington had the will and principle to let someone else take the reins of power when he could have easily run again. That undoubtedly helped our nation survive its infancy. The follow through after a tectonic government shift is crucial, and Washington heled set a trend of limiting executive power to avoid abusing the office. Other revolutions have ended with presidents for life who gut the freedoms of their people. Not us. He also helped keep the Nation free of being reliant on a single unifying figure who in turn became a single point of critical failure. Looking at you Simon Bolivar, Napoleon, Haitian revolution, and the various El Jefe archetypes.

Because you should not need and do not need to be a history buff to know, as an American anyways, that George Washington voluntarily resigned because that was how the two term system got set up in the first place. He was literally the first president, there was no real system set up yet and he took the reins and the leadership because everyone unanimously wanted him to take the role because he was such a good leader. But because he was such a man of great honor and integrity, he voluntarily chose to step down rather than stay president for life as he easily could have if he had wished. Like, I was just blown away that he was acting shocked, it was like someone saying there was only 47 states or something, like bro what? 😅
