Rory learned how to channel his "easy speed" into magnificent live performances. He was able to get himself and his band to play with incredible intensity and tempo without wasting unnecessary energy. Watching and listening to his live youtube shows [never saw him in person], I pick up that Rory feeds his energy to the band and they feed off him, yet he has an inexhaustible way of sustaining his energy for the full duration of his shows. He creates a "force of nature" in every live show I've seen on youtube. In Sept, 2023, I was in Ballyshannon, and met a gentleman who was a partner in a local art co-op, who knew Rory when he was a child, and we spent the better part of an afternoon having tea and telling Rory stories. Even though Rory's family moved to Cork, the family would return frequently during his childhood and the man was one of the friends that Rory would visit. There is a Rory Gallagher Festival that is put on every summer in Ballyshannon. Maybe someday I'll get back there to catch it. But Rory and I share the same birth year, so we'll see......

Yes! Rory Gallagher was the blues-rock guitarist who'd play any stage that'd have him and he _shone_ . "Bad Penny," "Moonchild," and "Calling Card" are other great songs of his but his live performances are always a step beyond studio work.

I saw Rory every time he came through the sf bay area in the 70's. He is without a doubt one of the best ever. Have every cd he made. The Irish rocker and a very kind person to boot. He has a statue outside Cork Ireland. Most rock concerts in the 70's featured solo's from all band members. Also check out his band "Taste".

Maybe a little excessive I agree but nobody and I mean nobody came anywhere near him. Everyone of his gigs were unique.Nothing was rehearsed. He never played a song the same way twice. I keep wondering how his fellow musicians kept up with him not knowing what he was going to do next!!

Thank you! Rory was an amazing artist spanning rock, blues rock, country blues and even some jazz thrown in. He played both electric and acoustic guitar, mandolin, harmonica, sax and even some banjo. I'd love to see you react to more Rory numbers. Try checking out "Calling Card" from his 1977 Hammersmith Odeon performance; "Rag Mama Rag" from Rockpalast 1976, "In Your Town" Paris 1974 (or the Beat Club 1971, but there may be copyright issues there), "Going to my Hometown" 1979 Rockpalast, or "I Wonder Who" 1984 Belfast for a sample of Rory's music. And you are dead on with Rory's personality. He was soft-spoken and even shy off stage, but a dynamo as soon as he hit that stage and was very relatable to his fans with his lack of "show business" aura. He was always more comfortable with a guitar in his hand; even during interviews, you could see him visibly relax as soon as he had an instrument. Please check out more of his great catalog!

That look of concentration on the drummers face says it all to me. I haven't even finished the vid yet. The independence skills it took to hold that fast bass while his left foot on the high-hats kept changing the rhythm, (I'm guessing at terms bc I'm not a musician- just a drum fan). And then of course the diff patterns and ideas with his hands. Fascinating to me! Ok, Salvo...what's next?

👍 Time keeps on ticking... Going through a box of old ticket stubs not long ago. My first rock concert: May 19, 1973 East Tennessee State University Rory Gallagher - ZZ Top 4 bucks It was about two months before Tres Hombres came out. (Dusty Hill's 24th birthday, I came to find out on his passing) It was Festival Seating and I managed to get about 15 feet from mic center. Rory Gallagher was pure fire right out of the gate, and his band was phenomenal. (particularly Lou Martin on his electric piano) Rory was amazing to see play and I think that he had as much fun as anyone. Then, BG and the boys came out. Back when they were the most badass blues rock band that ever was. Straw hats, jeans, no beards (but Frank. lol), and BG in a white tshirt w/ pack of Marlboros rolled up in the sleeve(lol). Needless to say, Rory and BG made a big impression on a 16 yr old. Blues rock, slide guitar nut ever since. RIP Dusty, Rory, Lou, and Rod. Thank You! Keep Rockin, Gerry! (eta & Billy n Frank!)

my absolute ever favourite blues rock guitarist. Sadly I discovered him a few years after his passing, and never saw him on stage. It was the father of a University friend, and amateur blues musician too, who introduced his music to me. Sadly, he also died a few years ago. So both are now strongly linked in my mind, and every time I listen to Rory, I've a tought for my friend and her father. Thank Daniel for letting me discover Rory, SRV and Johnny Winter. BTW, I had the opportunity to go to a concert of "9 below Zero", which was basically Gerry McAvoy 's band (that bassist with mad skills). They rocked the place to the ground❤ Rory's rhythm section was no joke!

My favorite guitarist ever. Live shows were so high energy and lasted at 3 hours--great memories of the shows I was honored to attend. The bassist, Gerry McAvoy, played with him for 30 years. Lou Martin, keyboards, came in and out of the band. Rod D'Ath was my favorite drummer of the 3 different, main drummers he had in the band over the years. Rolling Stone bashed them as mediocre and not up to Rory's talent--I'd call that writer mediocre at best. Check out the story and look of his main guitar, the 61 Strat. Tattoo'd Lady, Calling Card, Bad Penny, Shin Kicker, Moonchild, A Million Miles Away, I Fall Apart are some of my favorites.Going to My Hometown, he brings out a mandolin. Pistol Slapper Blues/Too Much Alcohol are acoustic solos.

Jimi Hendrix once said of Rory, "He's the best guitarist that nobody outside of Ireland and the UK, has never heard about." Rory was never about the Big money, but all about the music, and the fans. He would rather play in a small intimate venue of a couple thousand people, rather than a huge football stadium of 50, 000, and get more money, but the music sound as good. Rory has to be at least top 3 guitar player all time with Jimi Hendrix, and Johnny Winter.

Sadly only Gerry McAvoy (bassist) is still alive. Rory passed in 1995, Lou Martin (keyboards) passed 2012 and Rod de'Ath (drummer) passed in 2014. McAvoy is Irish as was Gallagher and Martin; de'Ath was Welsh. My personal favourite track of Rory's was Tattoo'd Lady especially the live version for Irish Tour 74 (which I believe I bought on cassette tape on its release !!) The counter play on Tattoo'd Lady between Rory and Matin on his electric piano is awesome.

As a teenage boy, Brian May of Queen use to go with his mates to see Rory's band Taste and Brian tells his story of how humble Rory was to speak with him after a gig about his sound and thats when Brian purchasd his first electric guitar and a Vox A30 amplifier. The rest is history as they say. Rory also gave Canadian legends Rush a major break with a support slot on a tour, later they'd return the favour and Rory would support Rush. They remained friends till Rorys passing. A rare gem was Rory who remained true to his craft till the end.

Saw him live four times in the early 70s. Always amazing. My favourite is "Shadow Play" Live in Montreux 1979. (Video by NEA ZIXNH)

For reasons I don't clearly understand, Rory and a number of other blues guitarists, never wrote radio friendly songs. You could make a lot of money, if you wrote radio friendly songs but he never did.

Radio wanted pop music, Rory never had any intention of being a 'pop-star'.

Try 'Edged In Blue' from Calling Card. Always sounded like a hit single to me, and it was before 'Sultans Of Swing' (listen to the solo at the end). But Rory wouldn't release singles.

Had the pleasure of seeing him play a few times. Even took both my Irish parents to see him at was back then in 1976 Hammersmith Odeon. The smile on both their faces of seeing a young Irish lad playing, as they were more of the traditional Irish music side things Dubliners etc. Ruarì even gave them a wee wave. One Irelands greatest! 🇮🇪 👍☘️ U2? Ppppfffttt!

Glad you liked Rory, but there are so many more great performances to catch up on and in my mind way better than 'Bullfrog' even tough it is still agreat track.

Not a Taste song. An old blues number by Willie Harris. Can’t recall Rory doing it with Taste but it did become a live favourite after the group split.

Rory's live performance on The Old Grey Whistle Test on the BBC in the 70's was what introduced me to him. Unbelievable! I don't think I have heard anything like it since. As an aside, Mick Jagger wanted him in the Rolling Stones.

I know Rory and his music well - and have loved from the 70s. But I think SalvoG sums it up real well. Rory's big talent was simply being a nice guy who loved music and loved playing for the people. He was of the people and for the people. Let's all rejoice in that and enjoy his music !
