My Grandmother worked for Boeing and designed Jaquelin Kennedy's Personal Bathroom!!! She was a master vinyl layer! I believe she covered all of the interior of the plane but the First Lady's Lavatory was her very own design!!!!! So proud of her!!!!!

It is interesting to note that LBJ took control of the Dallas investigation and turned it over to the FBI, when the murder of a President was still not considered a federal crime.

I visited SAM 26000 in 2003. It's located in a very large multi-hanger section of Wright Field that we had to board a bus to get to (at that time) on the far side of the field outside of Dayton, Ohio. There are many presidential aircraft within that hanger facility but this one (was of particular interest) to me. I was only 16 years old when JFK was shot but I remember that day like it was yesterday. As a pilot, when I saw the cockpit of that airplane I could see how simple it all was. No glass cockpit, all "steam gauges" and certainly NO GPS at all. It was pretty basic. I only saw this airplane one other time in person and that was in 1972 when Nixon and his wife Pat landed on St. Croix U.S.V.I. (for a vacation on St. John in 1972). I lived on St. Croix at the time. The president exited the airplane and then walked over to the terminal area where I was standing with many other people and I got to shake Nixon's hand that day. He looked me right in the eye too, as I did him. He looked much older and very tired than he did in the media photos of the time. I couldn't ever forget how shiny that airplane was. I went out to the airport at night to see it again. It was parked on a section of the apron where it was not close to any other aircraft. Lights where positioned all around it that shined on the airplane and military guards were posted all around it. It sure looked beautiful. Never in a million years did I imagine one day being allowed to board that airplane. What a great day it was.

N Russell they moved everything in that hangar into the new fourth building at the main museum complex. Bus rides and previous authorizations are no longer required to see or walk through this aircraft (or the other presidential aircraft).

I take my grandsons to the museum 3 or 4 time a year, (we only live 20 minutes away) and I still get a sense of pride everytime I see SAM 26000, and the chills whenever I board it and stand in the very spot that Johnson took the oath of office!

I have been there that's one of my favorite places to visit. I went inside this plane several times there were other presidential aircraft there at the time. The plane that Eisenhower flew in was there.

I am green with envy. I too remember November 22, 1963 like it was yesterday. I turned 17 just 29 days later. So we are the same "vintage". President Nixon came to my neck of the woods to dedicate a new school named after President Eisenhower. Air Force One flew into Selfridge Air Force Base (outside of Detroit) for the occasion. My father worked at base operations and my wife and four kids and I (along with several hundred others) were there to greet the president when he landed. The three memories that stand out for me that day are the secret service searching our baby's diaper bag, the president had on a ton of makeup on, and after I shook his hand he patted our baby daughter on the cheek. It was quite a while after the plane's scheduled departure that a frustrated major at Cleveland Control called my father to tell him that if SAM 26000 didn't take off in the next 15 minutes he wouldn't get clearance for take off for another hour and a half. My father told the officer that SAM 26000 is Air Force One and he would not make any such demand. He offered to patch the major through directly to the pilot. After a long pause, there were a few choice swear words from Cleveland directed at my dad and that was the end of that. SAM 26000 took off about 45 minutes later with no flack from anyone at Cleveland Control.

For someone who as a child flew to many corners of the world aboard civil Boeing 707s, visiting this beautiful airplane was like coming home. Along with the two VC-137B aircraft (Boeing 707-120 series) and SAM 27000, this is the best preserved Boeing 707, with all those "Space-Age" interior fixtures still in place. Yes, she has a very special place in my heart.

Went thru it a couple weeks ago. The interior is protected by glass and the aisle is narrow. But it is a thought provoking and awesome experience to see when there are no crowds. Tons of history inside there. Makes it all real and maybe feel immediate.

My father worked in the radar and antenna research lab at Boeing and was one of the people that built the antennas and radio/communication equipment on this aircraft. When it was done he also did all the radio noise testing before it was delivered. They ran all the electronic systems to see that they worked and didn’t interfere with each other. He also worked on all the 707 type aircraft that were used as AF1.

I tested a stabilizer jackscrew for an Air Force 707 with an Air Force inspector. Later I was told it was for Air Force 1. I can’t confirm that, but it one of many sources of pride in my 35 years as a aircraft mechanic technician.

I live in Columbus Ohio and on 9/11/01 I was standing out in front of where I work at about 5pm(long after all civilian air traffic was grounded) and a co-worker points up and says, "Look! Air Force One!". I said, "That's not funny". I looked up and it was way up there but you could still kind of make out the color scheme, and there was an F-16 off of each wing. I later found out that Bush was flying to Andrews AFB from Offutt AFB in Nebraska at the time. I felt a kind of pride that those bastards tried to destroy our country and our government was still functioning.

Been there, it's incredible to be allowed to get onboard and see what those presidents saw, be where they were for long stretches of time. Sadly I didn't get much time onboard because the museum was closing for the day. But i'd HIGHLY recommend the museum for anyone in the Dayton, Ohio area. It's absolutely mind boggling what they have there on display (the Valkyrie has an amazing presence). I could have spent days there. Many thanks for all those involved who have worked hard to make it available to the public. :)

This Plane is the crown jewel of all the planes at the museum.... I visited the air museum and was on this plane.... I was so excited to be on the plane....you go from front of plane to the rear end door to go down off the plane.....all my young life in the 60's Ive seen this aircraft on TV.....never did I ever think of someday actually seeing the plane up close and going aboard her..... As a grade school kid in the 1960's this plane was a very big symbol of the Presidency. If you look back at old newsreel footage it was the star of the show. Raymond Loewy who designed the paint scheme also designed the classic shaped Coke bottle and the Studebaker Avanti along with many other famous things.

I was only five when JFK was assassinated. The event became close to my heart one of the highlights of my life was visiting the HF Museum in Michigan. When I saw the presidential lemosene there, I FROZE! I don't think I moved a mussel for several minutes. I relived the reality of the famous film from that day in my mind. It has been my dream to visit the memorial of my other presidential hero, Abe Lincoln one day. I am 62 now and that hope is fading.

I got a chance to board this aircraft when I was in Seattle years ago. It was a cold rainy day and I basically had the aircraft to myself. All I could think about was President Kennedy casket being carried up those stairs at the rear of the aircraft after being assassinated. I remember seeing where the bulkhead had been repaired and where the plexiglass was fixed in place. I really didn't get to enjoy the aircraft for what it was.

Clayton Sam 26000 was NOT the first jet to be used as AF 1 that would be SAM970 which is in the Museum of Flight Seattle. It was not specifically built for the AF but purchased and converted, but it was the first, its sister ship is at the Pima Museum in Tucson Ariz !!!! FYI !!!

Interesting photo with President and Mrs Carter along side of Nixon and President Ford. Nixon resigned in August 1974 and Carter announced in December 1974. Just curious as to how they ended up on Airfare One at the same time. Looked it up and it was when Nixon, Ford and Carter represented Reagan at Anwar Sadats funeral in 1981. It was just and interesting photo to me.

SAM 27000, a matching 707 that was in service when JFK was murdered, went on to be the primary AF One for Ford, Carter, and Reagan. Daddy Bush took delivery of the 1st 747. SAM 27000 is also a museum piece at the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, CA north of Los Angeles. I walked through it and the space is cramped and small for everyone including the president and his wife. No luxury at all. The Library paid for the disassembly of the SAM 27000 when it was retired, paid for it to be flown to Edwards Air Force Base and there loaded on trucks. The caravan of trucks had to drive from Edwards through Los Angeles through the San Fernando Valley at night when the streets could be closed for such a wide and long load on each truck. Then the trucks has to go up a steep incline on the mountainside that the Library was being constructed, off-loaded, then the plane was reassembled as workmen built it's display pavillion around it. It's quite an amazing engineering feat. If you are in that area it is well worth your time and $25 a head to go through the library (even you don't like Reagan) just to see the plane in its pavillion.

Delta Foxtrot, At the top, just above the jet engine intake? They are part of the cabin air conditioning and pressurization systems. One interesting thing is that the original 707 only had them for engines 2 and 3. Later on for later versions of the 707 they added one for engine number 4. There are some 707s that have them for all four engines.

Delta Foxtrot, I took a structural repair class from a Boeing engineer. Surprisingly he stated that Boeing selected some of the worse aluminum alloys for the B707. They were not really good at dealing with stress corrosion cracking. He also admitted that the fuselage skin lap joints were problematic. He actually praised the DC-8 in these areas. Those decisions were some of the reasons why some commercial DC-8s were flying long after almost all commercial B707s were grounded. While the 707 and 727 were impressive, they have some characteristics that are bewildering. The double bubble fuselage cross section for one. A simple circular fuselage cross section would probably have been better over the life cycle of those aircraft. Slightly larger and taller landing gear would have helped later on when the inevitable fuselage lengthening occurred.

Delta Foxtrot , The newer fly by wire aircraft are designed with lessons learned from decades of previous problems. Interior occupant safety is better. Survivable crash protection is increased. The latest dual HUD category III CERTIFIED airliners are safer during final approach. We have some amazing automatic braking systems. No, I have to disagree with you. I will take the latest B777, B787, or A350 over what we had previously for transoceanic travel.

The first president to fly using the call sign Air Force one, l do believe was President Dwight Eisenhower in 1953 after a near mid air collision with a commercial aircraft EA 8610, when his call sign which was AF 8610 got mixed-up by air traffic control. The 2 Boeing 707's which were retired are known today as JFK's air force one (26000) & President Reagan's Air force one (27000). Which leads to an interesting question. When the present 'Angel aeroplanes' 28000 & 29000 are retired, to which of the former presidents are in line for the honour of having these aeroplanes as their air force one?. I am pretty sure that one will go to the Bush family, but the other is up for grabs. Any suggestions whom should get the honour?. Interesting video.

My Uncle Maurice Mullen was the pilot on Air Force One during the Carter Administration. He flew bombing missions over Germany in WWII . He said Carter was not a nice guy. A bit of an asshole.

My uncle worked at Boeing in Washington State. He worked on the secret communication equipment in the plane. It was very involved. Other aircraft would be in the air to communicate with Air Force One so as to relay the communication. Very primitive by today's standards. About 1974, I walked right up to the aircraft at Andrews. My cousin worked on Army aircraft at Andrews. Eaglegards... P.S. I got drafted and sent to the Republic of Vietnam by LBJ.

Ottonturk , No, I think it was more about "bids" from different aviation museums. The bids were about how the museum would display the aircraft, annual attendence projections, etcetera. Not any money paid for the aircraft. There were huge competitions in such museum"bidding" for the Concordes and the Space Shuttles.

@@davidhoffman1278 First presidential jet 86970 a 707-100 sits in Museum of flight Seattle, sister ship 86971 sits in the Pima Museum Tucson Ariz 26000 a 707-120 in this video was the first special order from Boeing for presidential jet, USAF Museum Dayton Ohio, its sister ship 27000 is in the Reagan library in Calif. all four preserved !!!

@@wilburfinnigan2142 , We were given one of the Lockheed Jetstars that was in the SAM fleet for our museum here in Warner Robins GA. Even those were subject to competition for allocation. The DoD doesn't play around with many museum acquires. You have to present a viable restoration for display plan and a maintenance for display plan. We are probably going to have to give up our B-52D as the increase in corrosion outpaces our maintenance fundraising.

Even the museum of flight after restoration of their B52 D at Paine Field Everett had to take it apart and truck it south to the museum in Seattle !!! I would also like to see British Airway "repossess" Its Concorde from Seattle !! It has been there since 2003 16 years and I doubt now it would ever fly again !!!!

I was stationed at Holloman AFB NM in the mid 70s. The President (Ford or Carter) was in El Paso TX and 26000 came to Holloman as backup to be near by if needed. I now live near Dayton Oh and see it on a regular basis at the Museum.
