Thats not to ignore the undemocratic part of US politics, which is that it's partially P2W. Anyways, i think we'll see more Elon using it to clear the way regulation wise ahead of him, rather than building walls against competitors. After all, Tesla literally has their patents open for competitors to use, so it would surprise me if it suddenly flipped. Thats the Jeff Bezos way, and not really the Elon way thus far. I have to imagine people like you are some combination of bitter and scared about AI to say stuff like this. If you haven’t found some way to leverage LLMs for a significant benefit in your work, hobbies, or education, it’s not because you’re too good for them or because your work is too complex, it’s because you don’t know how and when to use them. It’s a skill that requires creativity and critical thinking, and if you aren’t practicing it, you’re likely falling behind.

Seems like OpenAI has abused the GPT architecture to the point where scaling it further will yield such diminishing returns that it's impractical. The o1 "reasoning" paradigm feels like it's contrived and exists solely to ship a new product. If it's so expensive to run inference on that it costs ~10x more, thats not really that impressive or exciting (from an AI perspective at least). How would you tokenize reasoning anyway? Reasoning isn't a discrete process. The only reason it works for language is because different people generally interpret the same words similarly. This must also be a much less parallelizable task (based on the response times), so it doesn't seem like it'd be practical to scale this either. It's probably a good pivot from a pure research perspective, but releasing a product in the AI space that costs $200/month might be a (sort of) bad look for "Open"AI.
