I can only imagine, I was around 9 when it came back in the 80's, I'd never seen young people look so cool, I went to school with sta press, Hushpuppies, a boating blazer and a cravat, at 9 and started looting 60's music

I’m the same age and I agree we were and are totally blessed to have lived thru the beautiful times!!! Nth London was a great place to be with great times and great mates, the music bound us all together even at our reunions in our later years!! Mods, skins , soulboys ….. loved every minute of it!!!

I did all this in the late nineties, same music, same clothes (second hand), all nighters at the same clubs, good deodorant, better dental health and we had ecstasy on top.

@@kimsutherland977 yeah, I listened to the sixties all through my life. The best clubs I went to played plenty of music you would never have even heard back then. Rare and unsuccessful but superb. Add the ecstasy on top and it’s pure heaven.

Im 66 just got into Northern soul back in 2017 when i was 59 went to my first Aldayer in 2019 i was into Motown back in the 70s i was a smoothly thats what we were class ourselves as because i was into all types of music but i did have a chance to go alnighter when i was 17 in 1975 but i turned down the offer because i was told there was dope involved so i never went i class myself a Northern soul girl now im glad i had a second chance of getting into Northern soul and i love it although Motown will always be my favourite music and part of me is still that smoothly back in the 70s been 17 and dancing to Motown was absolutely fantastic we did dance like the Northern soul dancers but we didn't do back drops or spins or high kicks but the moves are very similar beween the both styles of dancing im glad im part of Northern soul now

Spot on Farweasel. As well as The Wheel, there were places in Manchester like Takis, Top Of The Town, The Oasis (later Sloopys) playing soul back in the mid-late 60s. Stuff like Willie Mitchell, Otis, Sam and Dave, The Temps plus slightly rarer stuff like Major Lance, Billy Butler, Shorty Long was being played all over the place (Browns in Stretford, The Locarno in Sale etc) before NS was even a twinkle in Dave Godin's eye. We were leaping all over the place to it in our Ben Shermans, Lee Riders and brogues from '66 onwards and only ever referred to it all as soul. I don't recall knowing the term Reggae back then. We always knew it as Ska or Bluebeat. We sort of regarded ourselves as mods but later preferred the soulboys tag!

None of them 60s mods in that footage had ever heard this record. It was a northern classic. Played in northern all-nighters. When this was being played those mods were bring babies up. It was played in M's without a scooter in sight
@dominichetherington22877 ай бұрын
You talk shite this was released in 1968 when mods (ravers) ruled the term n/s wasn't used till 1971/72 trust me I was there

@@dominichetherington2287 Hallo Dom . Ok then , well , if what you say is true and as you say, you were there , can you tell me in what year and at which venue was Lonely for me first broken? Ste. Honest question .
@stephenlivesey66007 ай бұрын
Hallo Dom . After doing some research , I have to admit , I 'was' talking shite when I said that this record - Sam Dees , Lonley for you baby - was played in M's , it wasn't . My memory was playing tricks on me. A good mate of mine who used to DJ at the VA VA 's ,the Casino , the Ritz ,Top of the world Stafford, Morecambe pier and every other major venue since 1972 , and who worked for RCA records , who instigated the Grapevine label and founded Expansion records and who to this day promotes the biggest Northern soul and Modern soul events on the Soul Scene calender , and who still broadcasts soul music shows on several radio stations , and who has also wrote several books on the UK soul Scene.........reminded me that this track , and I quote , "only came to prominence after the casino closed (in 1981) . It may have been Stafford where it finally broke through " (1982 to 1986) . So Dom , you didn't hear it in the Flamingo club nor the Twisted Wheel or any of Mod Clubs of the 60s , "when mods (ravers) ruled " did you ? Although it was first issued in 1968 on the American SSS lable , as anyone with the most basic knowledge of the soul scene knows , thousands of tracks that were recorded by obscure artists in the US lay dormant utill they were "unearthed" by Northern soul DJ's and collectors in warehouses in Detroit and Chicago and were then brought back to the Uk and played on the Northern Scene , in the 70's and 80's . "Lonely for you baby " wasn't played until Stafford in the 80s - I was there too - it has never been considered a Mod record by knowledgeable soul fans , as , say Mitch Ryder and the Detroit wheels is , IE, played in the Mod clubs in the 60s , ......Trust me , I was there , since 75 in the casino ,actually. And I've obviously forgot more about soul music that you'll ever know . Like I said , the Mods in the footage of this video would have been in thier 40s when this track was first played in the soul clubs in the 80s - trust me, I knew some of them. I think that the person who linked this track to this Mods footage comes from the scooter Scene (no problem with that) but it's creating a false narrative . It is a Northern soul record originally. " Talkin' shite eh ?" You dropped a bollock there , pal didn't you ? Keep the faith , Ste.
