Few can illustrate the pain of these lyrics with a tragic emotional beauty. Longest Johns is one such band.

I've been a bit obsessed with this video since it was released and have been watching a bunch of times. This rewatch though, I played close attention to the writings on the walls and some of them are hilariously spicy, oh boy

🫣 I was thinking the same ... what a contrast to the character of the protagonist! I want to apologize in behalf of our country for the venues The Longest Johns have to endure!

Oof, hard to type with lots of tears in my eyes.. I've been hoping for a Sam Hall video for ages, so I'm really happy now. Yes, I know I just said I'm crying, but I'm happy too! And sad. It's such a beautiful song, and you sing it so beautifully. Lovely soothing soft JD voice, and lovely beautiful harmonies. I think I need to cry some more now.

There's evidence that this song was written down as far back as 1719, making it possibly the oldest song in TLJ's repertoire. Does anyone know of any older ones?
@ProfesoraNut6 ай бұрын
Perhaps John the Red Nose is older?

By the way, that's a neat fact about this song.

Upon further research, the “High Germany” section of Cruel Wars may make reference to the War of Spanish Succession, and it may have originated from then. But that’s the only one I can find at the moment.

A great job. This is one of those songs that I forget exists, but is absolutely one of my favourites when I hear it. Songs about highwaymen who know they're going to be executed are a lovely subset of British folk music, and weirdly common. A truly adequate rendition. Beautiful.

Back when I was a kid, nearly 70 years ago, I remember a line, oh my name it is Sam Hall it is Sam Hall and I hate you one and all, you’re a bunch of f@#$kers all, damn your eyes, damn your eyes. I've made my comment praising the rendition. Here is my comment recommending a song to do next: There are a handful of great compositions of Tolkien's poems, that I think you could apply your talent to. My personal recommendation would be The Song of Durin

You shall die." At the trial they told me, "You shall die." And they flung me into jail where I'll drink no more strong ale And my neck will pay for all when I die, when I die And my neck will pay for all when I die They drove me up Tyburn Hill in a cart, in a cart They drove me up Tyburn Hill in a cart They drove me up Tyburn Hill and I stopped to make my will Oh, the best of friends must part; fare thee well, fare thee well Oh, the best of friends must part; fare thee well Up the ladder I did grope, that's no joke, that's no joke Up the ladder I did grope, that's no joke Up the ladder I did grope and the hangman fixed the rope And ne'er a word I spoke coming down, coming down And ne'er a word I spoke coming down Oh me name it is Sam Hall, chimney sweep, chimney sweep Oh me name it is Sam Hall, chimney sweep
