I hate it when all those 2nd amendment idiots run around saying their assault rifles are protected by the law!!! Back, when it was written, guns were 3 foot long, 20 pound heavy, muskets that could shoot maybe 3 times a minute at sub-sonic speeds and mostly not even were you were aiming. Now they are light, easily movable high-tech affordable killing machines firing 45 deadly high velocity bullets per minutes with reloading times of 3 seconds compared to 20 seconds back then... that is not the same and propably not what they expected when they wrote that law!!

Some more facts about how Australia changed gun laws: - they finished the legislative process successfully in 3 months - their CONSERVATIVE government headed the movement because they put their foot down in order to try and reduce mass shootings - they took away all guns and put in new reasonable regulations which most people within the nation find manageable, even the current gun owners in Australia - like Sam said, there have been no mass shootings in Australia since this legislation was passed in 1996 Australia's model worked and has SAVED LIVES. Their government came together to make a change because this issue is unacceptable to ignore. Before you know it, it will be your son, your wife, your father, your best friend. If you don't want to lose your loved ones, then yell at our government to protect their safety and stop supporting the NRA.

It's not even about taking away all guns (and heaven forbid violating a 2nd amendment rights!) , it's about regulations stopping *dangerous and mental unstable people* from owning guns. You and Sam both mentioned Australia, but there are examples all throughout the developed world (Canada, New Zealand, England, Japan) where gun legislation has resulted in a reduction of gun violence. What bothers me most, however, is that no matter who or how many die, no-one ever evens tries to fix the obvious problem that America has with guns.

New Zealand actually beat Australia by 4 years to tighten the gun control laws concerning semi automatic rifles, after the Aramoana massacre where 14 people were murdered. This does not stop anyone from owning a gun in this country, unless it is found that you have an unstable personality or criminal connections during the background checks. The police interview family members and also inspect where your guns and ammunition will be separately stored. The checks can take months to be completed.

That's not what AR15 do. You're thinking an automatic rifle. Which does have legit hunting uses. The best weapon for boar hunting is an automatic, because boars can often shrug off multiple bullets and charge right into you, goring you with their tusks or breaking limbs in the charge. Furthermore, pigs are social. Boars hang out in groups of a dozen or more. If you find one, you likely found several more, and they're all a threat to your person and to your livelihood. Because the main thing driving boar hunting is that wild hogs will ravage farmland. They'll invade commercial and family farms and destroy a field overnight. So you have to take care of them immediately or risk losing your business or even your home when your entire season's paycheck goes out the window. So you track or tag one, follow it back to its group, then you drop as many as possible before they scatter. To do that, you need automatic rifles that can put 3 rounds into each pig in a moment. Preferably, you want multiple guys with automatic rifles. One on each flank and one or more firing into the main body of the group. Let too many survive and they repopulate virtually overnight and are right back to destroying your livelihood and that of your neighbors.

It would be great if a million people went to D. C. demanding a ban on all automatic weapons, rifles and pistols, as well as demanding gun registration, and comprehensive background checks (more than a few minutes filling out a form) and a 72 hour waiting period (a president was set by states requiring a 72 hour waiting period for abortions, why not lethal weapons) to screen out felons, terrorists listed on the national watch list, individuals with severe mental disorders, people convicted of violent crimes. Every state requires certain things of people seeking a drivers licence and vehicle ownership. A person must learn and adhere to laws for safely operating a vehicle and pass a written test. That person must demonstrate competence in the safe operation of said vehicle, a driving test That person must have insurance on said vehicle. The vehicle must be registered. Nobody is confiscating cars because they are registered. Why can't this be done with lethal weapons? Is that too much to ask?

I don't get it. Last night Maddow showed a new poll demonstrating that around 90% of Democrats, 80% of Republicans, and even 70% of NRA members favor expanded gun control laws. The anti-gun groups are the big obstacle. Most Americans want some "common sense" gun control. Some minor tweaks. Some slight bolstering of the gun laws. Most of the anti-gun lobbies want a full ban on all firearms. They want the entire nation disarmed. Time and time again, every time the pro-gun side makes a concession and gives a little ground up, the anti-gun side takes it and runs with it and sends out the call that with a little bit more funding and a few more calls to congress they could achieve their goal of banning firearms. Every time they win a little ground it just emboldens them to demand even more. They are never satisfied. Every time they get compromise, they violate it and demand more the very next day. So no pro-gun group can allow compromise anymore. Because the anti-gun side is totalitarian and refuses to behave in good faith. So long as anti-gun groups refuse to rest until a total gun ban is in effect, pro-gun groups must refuse to give even an inch of ground, lest they give an inch, and inch, another inch, etc, until one day they take a look at the laws and realize they've allowed substantial progress towards a full gan ban to take place. Because they let the anti-gun side make a thousand tiny cuts that all added up.

I'm sick of people arguing. When will we finally accept that someone's right to live outweighs your right to a firearm? The NRA is responsible for more American deaths than any interest group in the nation. When will we finally accept the fact that to be safe, we need to be stricter on who gets and owns a gun? I don't want to take your guns away, it's too late for that. What I do want is for people to not live in fear of getting shot to death when they go out for a fun time with friends and family. If you are a law abiding citizen, then you'll have no problem keeping and owning a gun. If you aren't, then you shouldn't have one. I'm sure tobacco has a much longer list, and the car industry, food. You have the rights you have, one of them is to be armed. Hondo Trailside, in America 87 people die every day die to gun violence. That's close to 33,000 people per year that die needlessly. Of those 33,000, 26% are children under the age of 12. How is this not life versus guns? If the NRA hadn't lobbied Congress in letting the ban on assault rifles expire in 2004, the Orlando shooter may not have been able to purchase the rifle that killed 53 innocent people. Also, in the state of Florida there is no waiting period for the purchase of the AR-15, unlike handguns which require a 6-8 week waiting period. The AR-15 has been the most widely used weapon in mass shootings since 1994. The Sandy Hook massacre, Virginia Tech, and others were committed with the AR-15. How is that not a problem? How is that ok? I don't care if you want guns, I grew up with them, however my right to live greatly outweighs your right to a firearm. And the reason why we are seeing a decrease in crime rates, particularly gun crimes, is due to an increase in gun control legislation. We are doing better, but more needs done.

If that is the case, then why are there documented cases of felons being released from prison and going right to the gun ship and buying another firearm? It's absurd. Also, the NRA lobbied congressional representatives to let a decade long ban on the sale of assault rifles expire in 2004. How can anyone be ok with that? In addition, there are multiple military officials who have said "you don't hunt animals with an AR-15. If you are hunting with an AR-15, you are hunting for humans. No civilian needs an AR-15". I am ok with people having guns, but no one can deny we need better idiot control.

How many times have you seen a civilian use a gun to prevent a mass killing in the US? Never How many times have you seen a civilian use a gun to start a mass killing in the US? ~30 deaths a year (more this year!) As much as I love guns, we really need a limitation on who can buy guns. It's irritating seeing civilians who use "guns to protect" but I never actually see guns used for defense. (I'd still rather be able to use "assault rifles" without completely banning it. Don't get that confused)

You never see a civilian with a gun stop a mass shooting because almost all mass shootings are in gun free zones. So it would be illegal for a civilian to carry one in that place. Think about it schools, bars, movie theaters, nightclubs, all gun free zones so yeah you will almost never see someone stop a mass shooting because they happen in places where it's illegal for civilians to carry them.

That's false. The distinction only matters if you're in the military, and even there they encourage soldiers to use semi-auto at all times for accuracy. In the civilian world, semi or full auto, it doesn't matter. That rifle is equally deadly either way.
