+King Kasper totally agree. Just visited the UN Human Development Reports and it shows that Japan is at 26.9 suicides and S.Korea is at 41.7 while the US sits at 19.4. (All data regarding deaths per 100,000 males in 2015). Looking at this data, I'm unsure on Vox's argument implying that less guns will mean less suicides, since there are so many other easy ways to take your own life in a developed country. (S.Korea & Japan have extremely strict gun control and civilians have no access to guns) I personally think it would be much more difficult to use a gun vs. overdose on over-the-counter drugs, jump, etc... But then again that's just my opinion; you would need more data and research to make any good conclusion.

It's not the guns that changed, it's things like violence in media and prescription anti-depressant drugs. I wonder if you knew that the machine gun was invented over 200 years ago. If you have a change in violence, you have to correlate it to other things that have changed. Guns haven't changed significantly in a hundred years.

It is a step down the path to it. You are delusional if you think it is not. The only motivation in any politician's mind is "How do I stay in power and benefit the most?" Believing that the human nature of any man is above that of Assad, Lenin, Lukashenko or even Hitler, is delusional at best. If that politician thinks they could get to and stay in control of a reasonably wealthy nation by taking the route of direct dictatorship, they would do so. Human nature is fundementally bad. Of the random countries she has shown, proportionately US is below some of the developed UN countries she had shown. The reason why the US kill people less is because of the bad guys getting stopped with GUNS. -Tries to convince you that gun laws are bad and tries to perpetrate the narrative of the 2nd amendments being inefficient by adding suicides. As if Guns are the reason people commit suicide. All 33 of the countries ahead of US in suicide rate have controlled gun laws and still kill themselves more. -She goes on to ignore how a country like Australia had a gun ban and was proven that it was ineffective. Because not only were non fire arm suicides happening at a more frequent rate than gun suicides, but it spiked as soon as it was put in place and faced virtually no change to the suicide rate -Compares the homicide rate to other countries not realizing that 4/5 of gun violence are because of drugs. Chicago despite having the highest homicide rate in the U.S. has also one of the most strictest gun laws -Gives a stat where she compares Aids Drugs War and Terrorism to Gun Violence in the US. She fail to realize War and Terrorism also include guns. And instead of picking the most frequent causes of death like Heart Disease and Cancer she adds Aids which isnt even a huge deal in the US anyway. .003% of the US have aids and even a lower % die from it. Homicide isnt even top 10 in causes of death in the US.(And yes i understand the graphic was designed to show gun deaths in total) -Would sometimes switch between Suicide to Homicide to all around gun deaths. The problem with this is that this also include self defense homicides and justifiable ones. ***** Right, because correlation of gun ownership with crime in itself is a viable reason to restrict law abiding citizens? If you haven't noticed; murder, manslaughter and assault with a deadly weapon have been a crime since the day we first saw guns. So with your logic of restrictions, there are no murders and shootings in the first place, because they are not legal! Why restrict gun ownership, if there are no gun crimes? Or could it be that these people who commit crimes, don't follow the law in the first place? Because that's totally not possible!

In terms of mass shootings it always appears that the main problem is the lack of communication between the police and mental health services. Here in the UK if you want a shotgun or rifle you apply to the police and they do a background check, they also interview you and if you suffer from mental health problems you get refused. There is better communication later on if someone has a licence but then develops mental health issues. Also this licence needs renewing every five years. You also need a reason to own a shotgun or rifle; so you live on a farm and need it for pest control. Wanting to own a cool rifle isn't good enough. It's a pretty good system but there are still illegal guns out there. Just less of them because it is so strictly controlled. EDIT: and the reason I mention mental health is because 90% of the time the person who becomes a mass shooter very often has mental health issues which if the authorities were aware of earlier they could have reacted to and maybe prevented the act.

The basic human right to life is definitely not equivalent to gun ownership, otherwise anyone who lives anywhere with more restrictive gun control laws has somehow forfeited said right. @erik84677 жыл бұрын
andrewia yes but according to the chart at 3:53 the burgalary rate is the highest in the Netherlands, so the chances of you needing to defend yourself at home is also high. Considering the fact that there's only 17mil people in the Netherlands compared to that of 320mil in the USA the Netherlands shouldn't even be near the top of that chart but in almost every chart they show in the video the Netherlands is there, countries like Russia, China and India aren't. We can't just get rid of all guns. It's impossible to do that in the US literally everyone would have to volunteeraly go and give in all of their guns which won't happen, instead we need to create common sense laws. There isn't enough police in America to go around to people's houses every few months to check and see if they have safe storage, instead everything has to be done before the person buys a gun. There needs to be background checks, everyone who buys a gun should be put in a registry, there needs to be a list of medication and mental disorders and if your taking those medications or have the slightest of those disorders you don't get a gun. There also needs to be proper training. It's the same with buying a car. No license no car. You should get a license beforehand and in order to get a license you need to pass a gun safety test.

To be honest, I've agreed with points on both sides, that control won't work and that we need more control, but generally more with the general idea that we need more control, not so much with the ways people are coming up with _to_ control it. It all seems to boil down to the state of things just kinda being a mess, what with minorities being much more vocal in general lately through the internet and social media, and not necessarily only with gun control/violence. Hopefully once this wave of increased power through social media and the internet dies down enough, or people find ways to take control of it more, we can really get good, effective systems in place so that everyone can finally agree, or at least compromise effectively, on a lot more issues.

While I would like to see, for example, this video with less overall bias, I've become rather disenchanted with the whole "pick a side" nature of popular politics these days and have become content with resources that are heavily liberal. I am fully aware that each person has their own preferences, but I was simply implying my distaste for for the contention that is aimed at _any_ news source online, not just Vox, anymore. I have my opinions on propaganda, as you mentioned this video "reeks of," but I have simply reached the point where I find solace in seeing that my sentiments aren't unique and otherwise stand away from the nonstop street brawl that is the vocal extremism of internet-aided politics.

We have one of the strongest political systems in the world, (though no one trusts it because of political corruption) WE chose who WE want for President, governor, etc. Paranoid much, you think that would happen again or something? That was in the past. Be honest to yourself. Do you own a gun, and for what reason would you? To protect your family? Recreation or sports? Look how Japan's doing without guns. The point is that with guns involved there will be death. I'm not saying to get rid of it completely, if you could restrict to the point where Japan's at, I'd be satisfied.

When the police finally did arrive they took his sword, to figure out if it was a samurai sword because those are illegal, and when they determined that he had done nothing wrong charged him to ship his own property back to him. Or we could teach our kids to have respect for others and authority, but that's too difficult, let's have the government do it for us

+pingpong1138 You're making a big assumption here. Probably several, really. But the important one is that people would want to teach their kids the specific thing and/or way you want them taught. They might, instead, teach their kids that police are the enemy and should never be trusted. Or some kind of machismo code, where you have to be tougher than everyone else around you. Or they might live in conditions so removed from anything you know that crime actually is the best option for advancement. Point is, even if everyone is 100% committed to disciplining their kids, they're going to be disciplining to different standards. Which, is how freedom works, so that's just the way it is.

After living in Europe, I can see a higher form of emotional intelligence there than most states in America.

+pingpong1138 sometimes not all kids can handle harsh punishments, the you restrain someone from doing something, the more they do it. Unless youre ofc talking about simple punishments like taking their toys away, restricting them from doing something (watch TV etc.) but definitely do not do physical damage as much as possible

I’m a Canadian, I have a degree in Justice Studies. I own two long rifles that are kept safely in my gun case. Even I agree with this, in Canada, everything above a single shot or semi auto long ride or shot gun is considered restricted or prohibited, where you need special training and registration inorder to even think about registering one. I lived on a acreage for a long time and primarily used my rifles to shoot gophers as they tore up my land. You may say I’m a libtard or ‘snowflake’ but I do agree, for people living in the city, gun laws should be an absolute. I personally believe that if you are in danger it’s better to carry pepper spray and a knife compared to a gun, as shooting a gun can kill a person while pepper spraying someone and using knife in defence probably won’t kill a person but will definitely debilitate them inorder to get away or protect personal property. I looked at the comments and many people quote Canada as a culprit saying people in Canada want less gun control, this is true, but only in the western provinces where people live on the prairies, on acreages, farms, and small towns. While in the east such as Ontario, Quebec, and the Martine provinces, people want more gun control. In Canada the only way to purchase an assault rifle is to have a prohibited license, and this license as far as I know, is inherited, or you must pass extensive tests to purchase a prohibited license.

You shouldn't be allowed to legislate what people "need" or don't "need". Your needs to shoot gophers isn't relevant to other people's needs or RIGHTS. Guns aren't the problem. Guns haven't materially changed in a hundred years, so they don't explain a sharp rise in deadly violence since the 1990s. For God's sake, look at what changed in the 1990s: violence in media and highly dangerous use of certain prescription drugs, especially in young people. The other major contributor is a huge rise in corruption, such as the now endless wars for criminal profit. People in the US are subject to daily bombardments of stress in the media. That is not nearly as extensive in other countries.

one objection: Pepper spray is a TERRIBLE WEAPON. In a large number of cases, it can be considered inhumane and cruel, and it especially cause lots of damage if you have a bit of a wind going. A much more humane but effective weapon would be a tazer/electric shocker. It completely dehabilitates them for a while and makes them seriously consider their life choices, yet it is nowhere NEAR as lethal and problematic as a normal gun. Definitely would reccomend

If you get into a knife fight with someone attacking you, you will both end up dead. Knife fights are brutal and vicious, I'd much rather have a firearm than have to rely on a knife to defend myself.

@@cyborgbob1017 You do realize that Tazers aren't always effective, right? Also, why would you be worried about an aggressors life? They aren't worried about their victims. I'd take a million dead aggressors over one dead innocent any day.

@GRIIZLEH9 жыл бұрын
+torchandhammer Alaska has one of the lowest gun crime rates... May I also add that they have the second highest gun ownership out of all 50 states behind Wyoming. On that note Wyoming is the 2nd lowest in gun crime. Ill also add that both of those states have some of the lowest population % of African Americans.

+Nick To be fair, Alaska has only the 2nd highest rate of gun violence in the entire US, Louisiana has the highest. 3rd is Alabama, 4th is Arizona, 5th is Mississippi.
