If it's a shoot out scene and I don't see recoil and reloading then A+ drops to C- real fast. That's why I guess I like the Daniel Craig Bond movies the most. The more realistic the better. Just saying. Edit: When Steve moves to the 191145 cal. from the shotgun, he racks a round into the chamber.

I always liked the fact that they got away it in spite of the odds, the double dealing, and their own personal flaws and imperfections. For a short time in the 1960s, it was okay to beat the system and to sidestep the stock Hollywood truism that "crime doesn't pay." In real life it's far more complicated than that, and we know better.

@Kristian-vb5dk
@Kristian-vb5dk 2 ай бұрын
Could be, but I doubt Marine training had much to do with it. Sure, both Peckinpah and McQueen were ex-Marines, but they were also gun guys who kept firearms in their private lives. You don't need a military training to properly handle a shotgun (which is a far more common firearm in a civilian life than in military anyway).

@@chardtomp But they weren't costing the studio twice as much money and making financial bombs. Hollywood is a business and unfortunately Peckinpah was blowing half the budget on coke and booze. The Getaway is a good movie but even Peckinpah admitted he was trying to make a hit movie and not a work of art like he did with Cross of Iron and The Wild Bunch, he needed the money and McQueen needed a hit to remain relevant. His most successful movie was Convoy a Smokey and the Bandit knock off and it was his worst movie and even that went overbudget because of his erratic personal life conflicting with his professional. Great filmmaker but he could never defeat his demons.
@chardtomp
@chardtomp 2 жыл бұрын
@@daniellee9328 Even during the worst of his drug and alcohol years he didn't make many movies that lost money and the ones that did were more the result of interference from clueless studio executives who should have just stayed out of his way and let him do his thing. Some of his biggest commercial successes happened during this time too. His career problems stemmed more from his being a poor politician who didn't want to play the studio game.

No one since Eisenstein ever directed action like Peckinpah. Nobody had a better eye and a better sense of rhythm in the editing and how different speeds and angles could magnify and broaden the experience. This sequence edited by Robert Wolfe was excellent. @oliverganley6178
@oliverganley6178 8 ай бұрын
The introduction of the music also helps to add tension. The scene of Rudy’s revenge attack has been set up since nearly the start of the film. The filmmakers needed to show that this sequence was more significant than the shootout scene before. The music fills that gap perfectly. All this makes the sequence itself underwhelming. Doc acts like he got hit, shoots Rudy, then his ‘injury’ goes away like it never happened. WTF!

Great movie, got it on DVD and love it. Much, much better then the remake with Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger. Together with "Bullet" my favourite McQueen movies.

Marine Raider I used to have a Flite King K-1200 with a 28 inch barrel. It was over 40 years old and never misfired. They made good, affordable guns.

I have the same model as in the movie. The day I got it, police were panicked by some POS who decided that it was stolen from some department and informed the locals. A couple friends and I had transferred from one car to another and during the switch is when weenie saw me with it. Since it was only a couple hours old and I had the receipt, that quashed any theft notion, so their next step was to see if it was legal barrel length. It's 18⅛". Totally legal. Totally badass. I shot it enough break the firing pin. Cost me $25 to have a hobbyist gunsmith order a new one and "fit" it to the bolt. Happy to give him a bit of business. Anyway, Sam Peckinpah really knew how to make gunfight scenes realistic. I've done some test demos with 00 buckshot into assorted media with pretty similar results. Of course drywall squibs come out much more dramatically than buckshot busting it.

I'd forgotten how good this film was. However, there are a few segments where the audience needs to suspend credibility for the sake of the plot, just like in any Western. In this scene for instance, we understand immediately that the local peace officers are so accustomed to the sound of ten minute gun battles (with machine guns) in the downtown precinct, that they don't bother to take any immediate interest in the event. Elevator cables are also considerably more robust than depicted .

And it wasn't like the ringleader plunged 20 or 30 stories after the cheesy elevator cables parted. That fleabag hotel probably had 7 floors, tops.

I saw this twice at about the time it was released -- remakably (it seems to me) 51 years ago. 1972 was a different time. I saw it first in college, then on a Peckinpah double-bill at an all-night show at the Playboy Theater on Dearborn in Chicago. Everyone had come to see 'The Wild Bunch', but 'The Getaway' came on first at 12:30 am. When 'The Wild Bunch' finally began c. 3 am, it soon became apparent the theater had obtained a defective print. The movie would stop and start, the soundtrack was out-of-sync, and there were huge gaps in the film. The audience grew restive, then outraged, and the theater had to refund everyone's money at 4 in the morning. Ah, the 70s.
