Hi Mary, the baking soda, are you aware you can make your own deodorant and toothpaste with baking soda? I am without teeth, so I only use it as deodorant, but it works awesome. It is cheaper than store bought stuff, and more important, it is far more healthy for you. You only need some coconut oil in a little jar, add about a teaspoon of baking soda, stur the lot, and you can put it under your arms. I use it before I go to bed, so not to mess up my cloth with oily spots, it works for at least a day after, more often I use it only once in 3 days or so. You can add any organic essential oil you like to add a smell, I use jasmin. For the toothpaste you can find many videos online. I can't get your goodies here, I live in Europe, but it was still interesting to see what things cost in the USA. Much love!

@@hands2hearts-seeds2feedamu83 I use a little jar like one from store bought day creme. Fill that with coconut oil, add a small tea spoon of baking powder, and stur it together. You can use it as such, or add a few drops of organic essential oil to your liking to add a nice smell. Done. I never use measurement, it is not an exact science. It can stain your clothing, so I use it before I go to bed, just wearing an old t-shirt. With coconut oil you can also make your own face oil, just add some herbs that are beneficial to your skin, like Sage and/or Calendula, leave it in for a month or so, till the oil takes on the herbs, and drain off the herbs. I use it with Sage, it is better than what ever creme I ever bought. (Calendula is not blooming yet..) Just be careful, like Mary says, if you use herbs when pregnant, using medication, and so on. Best to find multiple people that give information, for some don't know all or forget to say something important. Like with Calendula, a lady online says it can be safely used by pregnant women, but Heidi from Rain Country says it should not be used by pregnant women, for it can cause the loss of the baby. Basil and Sage should also not be used when pregnant or breast feeding, just to mention a few other herbs. It is important to inform yourself. You can find a lot of other things online, I find something new all the time. Have a beautiful day! Much love! Ps: I just got this video from Danu's Irish Herb Garden, how to make herbal deodorant. I have not watched it yet, though I thought you may find it interesting too: kzbin.info/www/bejne/raWWiqWAj6aVq5Y

Mary you are such a gem. Your enthusiasm always makes me smile. I’m with your son, a huge fan of olives. I could eat a can myself. We don’t have a Sam’s Club but I can get those at our Costco and I do ALWAYS have them on hand. I buy our whole chickens from the Hutterites in Montana even though I live in Washington. Ironically, we drive to northern Idaho to pick them up. However, all that being said, canned chicken comes in handy. Especially after you driven from Washington to Idaho to pick up your Montana chickens. LOL. We’re always up for a road trip.

Hi Karen, WOW!! That is a drive!! I haven't been up your way in years but I hear a lot of folks moving to the eastern part of Washington, Idaho, and Montana. It is certainly beautiful up there. I told my husband that if we couldn't live in Texas, that I would like to live in that area but he is a bit concerned about the cold temps! As a former NYer, I think I could handle it. I tell him it's a dry cold not a damp, wet bone chilling cold - as my dad used to say - that we had back East. Love, Mary

@@MarysNest we definitely have four seasons here. It does get cold but nothing like when we lived in Chicago. Those winters went on forever with that cold wind blowing off the lake. I love that it does get hot here spring/summer (101 degrees the other day-but that is unusual so early in the summer) but it is a dry heat. The humidity kills me anymore. It is beautiful in these parts even into Wyoming. The states you mentioned just seem very safe to me - no hurricanes, no tornados, no monsoon type of rain and no big BUGS. It was definitely a culture change for me but I have grown to love it. It really isn’t that far to go into Idaho but where we get the chickens is WAY up north by the Canadian border so it is a long day. Good ride for our pups, we get to spend time together and as a bonus we get a freezer full of good, healthy chickens. It is an outing we do every fall up to the Mennonite store to pickup our chickens.

We are the same when it comes to coffee. If the power goes off and comes back on we race to the kitchen to make coffee before it goes back out. I also am always looking for new coffee to try out. We also think exactly the same when it comes to honey, I have local honey and other kinds too and always pick up some from Costco, no Sam's club in my area. This might make you laugh, I have written caption with my videos and the caption doesn't always match what people say. When you said " I can't have enough pourable honey" my caption said "I can't have enough horrible honey". Gotta love technology. Have a great day Mary, I look forward to your next video. Charlotte

Mary, if you do like Danny & Miss Wanda @ Deep South Homestead, you take that green top off your pineapple & start off into a tree. Danny has a VLOG on how to do that. They now have several trees in their green house & high tunnels & have started harvesting pineapple from them. Homestead Tessie recans a lot of the ind'l sized cans, you might see if there is one on pineapple, but it seems to me she uses whatever the "blue" book says to can it as - you'll need to check that out for sure.

Hi Mary, you probably already know this, but as well as using the pineapple scraps to make vinegar, you can ferment them along with the core and the top to make a drink. My mum also used to make ginger beer plant which was popular straight after WW2 when rationing was still in place. Most households had a jar in their airing cupboard. I've no idea why it was called a plant when it was basically water, yeast, sugar and ground ginger. It made lovely ginger beer.

Great vid! We have memberships at both Costco and Sam’s also as they each have different things. About the carrots, many folks buy from places like Imperfect Foods featuring organic foods that groceries won’t accept or purchase imperfect fruits and veg directly from farmers at reduced cost. The sized-down carrots are much the same only you don’t feel you are throwing away parts you paid money to acquire. Someone taught me the ‘good, better, best’ method of growing, shopping, eating, living which has helped so much. Very important as you change to traditional cooking or really any part of your life. Like exercising, maybe you can’t do the 20 reps when you first start out but as you keep at it, you get better and better. Compari tomatoes are outstanding! The flavor!! On a side note, if I may, I sometimes think back to my grandmother who wouldn’t buy seeds for Big Boy or Better Boy tomatoes or many of the other hybridized foods that we now consider heirlooms because they weren’t natural.’ Thanks for the info about pineapple-didn’t know any of that!

I buy the cheaper honey for cooking and the raw unfiltered for consuming as is or added to tea and things like that. Helps save money for my family. If cooking with the raw stuff that you pay extra for the "raw" benefits its a waist of money sometimes. At least that's how I see it. Hope it helps some one! I also didn't know that maple syrup came in different grade/color, thank you! I love the one from Sam's, and then bought some from Costco and was wandering why it was a lighter color and the flavor is not as strong. I like the Sam's one more! Kind of happy the one I like more is the better one for you! lol I learned lore of things from your videos! Have a blessed day!

Great haul. I like the the 20 lbs of Jasmine rice and the ready to heat 7 grain blends. Weed Em and Reap buys a large bucket of honey from one of their local farmers in Arizona. They are a family of 4 and it takes them a while to use one up. I think it may have been a irregular request. Lee mowed our grass yesterday but he also had to wash the neighbors car as Daniel put mud all over their car. I had to hose Daniel off. He hates the cold water. Still working through typing and printing my second dream journal. About halfway through it and then I can type up the new ones I haven't written down yet.

I am a southern boy from New Orleans and I want to store GRITS for long term storage. I have trouble finding a company that packages grits for long term. I am a prepper. Can you help me to add grits to my stash. I like your channel and notice how thorough you are and I think you are very knowledgeable. Thanks.
@MarysNest
@MarysNest 3 жыл бұрын
Great question. I am not 100% sure about storing grits. Generally whole dried corn stores well but once it is ground it may only stay fresh a short period of time. There are differences of opinions on it - some say 1 year (this is what I would lean to) while others say 2-5 years. I would contact Utah State University Extension Service who are considered a respected authority on food storage. You can also look through their website as well as their free downloadable ebook on food storage: extension.usu.edu/preserve-the-harvest/files/Food-Storage-Booklet.pdf And here is the link to their main site: extension.usu.edu/preserve-the-harvest/research/food-storage-in-home Hope this helps. Please be careful with Walmart/Sam's tires. My husband works at a tire shop. He's seen so many tires come from Walmart that needed replaced. They are NOT the same quality as the "same" item at another place. Sam's buys the lower quality items that other places won't sell, and that's how they save you money. I have thought about getting a Sam's membership in addition to Costco, but I just don't think I would make the extra $45/ year worth it. You have made me interested to possibly checking it out, though.

@kay Kringle - I agree on principle but many of us don’t have local businesses for groceries and so Sams is no different than a Schnucks. They are all chains. Also, keep in mind that the big box stores employ local residents. But, to your point, I have sworn off Amazon (for a number of reasons including trying to spend locally). Agree we need to support local to assure they can stay in business.
