If they cost the same, and Costco treats their employees slightly better, then I side with Costco. My first job was Walmart. It was a easy yet hectic job that required no skill that anyone could do. I didn’t care about the pay because I knew it was a starter job and anyone could fill my shoes. But they treated us like shit. A packed trailer at the fastest would take 3 hours to unload. But we would sometimes get 3-4 trucks a night, and yelled at for taking too long. If we hit overtime, we were expected to take that time off before the end of the week, but the remaining crew was still expected to unload the same amount of trucks. On 2 truck nights, we would try to do one before and after lunch. But we would still get yelled at and sent to the floor to stock shelves and deal with customers. Turnover was about 3 months until someone just stopped showing up because that was our situation every single night. But again, we could quit at any time, and we usually did.

@David Moore Again, I would quickly run away from Sam's Club if Costco built a store closer to my home. I have no loyalty to Sam's Club or Walmart. This is a family that has more money than they'll ever know what to do with, worrying about petty things and treating the peasants like crap. I would never have shopped at Walmart or Sam's Club if Meijers and Costco was around. Meijers is a high class version of Walmart. I wouldn’t suggest being a member at both but if you can get one of their memberships on sale it would be worth doing. I think I got sams for $15 last 4th of july, and before that I got costco which came with like $80 worth of free stuff from groupon. What I appreciate the most about Sam’s club is that they tend to carry smaller items, where costco will always be big $10 valuepacks. If I recall correctly costco doesn’t carry cream cheese, which is annoying if you pick up a bag of bagels. Also, I like the grapes Sams club was carrying. Overall Sam’s club tends to have cheaper prices but usually not by much. I prefer Costco still for their food court and how good their kirkland branded products are. Also, I honestly don’t care how cheap Sam’s club products are, I probably won’t re-up my membership just because Sam’s club allows those 3rd party phone salesmen to harass customers. If I want cheap prices I’ll just go to the walmart nextdoor.

Used to have Sam's Club off and on, but the closest location was a ways away... Like there's about 3 other grocery's between where we lived, and the nearest Sam's. That changed when Costco broke into the Oklahoma market in 2015 for the first time, opening in Tulsa. We had both memberships, but because Costco opened only an extra mile from our nearest grocer (ironically Walmart [also a local grocer across the street from there]). We had dual memberships, but shopped Costco more than anything due to distance. Still do to this day too. Executive at Costco and basic at Sam's. In the 5 years since, Costco opened 2 stores in Oklahoma City, and planning a second further north in Tulsa (the og store is SUPER far south, lol)

We had Pace in our smallish city and Sam's moved in '94. I thought Pace was better and then Sam's bought them. Sam's was okay until Costco moved in in 2013 and we switched. I like Costco better for almost everything except they tend to have less overall selection and might not get enough name brands that Sam's is more likely to carry more frequently. I am also on the fence of whether Costco not owning any of the merchandise is a good or bad thing. Part of me thinks it affects their selection. Another fact about Costco, they recently opened their own chicken operation so they could keep selling their rotisserie chickens for as cheap as they do.

Having been a member at both, I would give the edge to Costco. The stores seems cleaner and more organized, and the products higher quality. The way they treat their workers is also a plus. However, one thing that really annoys me sometimes, though this could be considered both a positive and a negative, is how fluid their inventory is. It's cool seeing their stock rotate and finding new things, but infuriating when you want to go there to get something specific only to find that they switched it out. Plus the ones I go to seem to flip the store layout every few weeks which gets a little disorienting sometimes. On the other hand, Sam's seems to have more name brand items (either good or bad, depending) and a larger selection, and also keeps a more consistent inventory. Plus, they have giant Icee's for ~$1, which I wish Costco had. A slight pity bonus I'll also give is that they never seem quite as busy as Costco, so parking isn't an absolute nightmare and the checkout lines aren't as long.

I work at Costco and we definitely do this on purpose. The idea is that you buy more stuff because you don't know if it will be there on your next trip. I've seen Sam's employees who became seasonal employees for Costco and quit Sam's just for the chance to get in since it would be conflict of interest. Sam's Club could not survive the way it does without Walmart supporting it, it's why Sam's has closed down many locations while Costco has seen record growth even during the hard times Costco was opening stores and giving raises. Costco has less stores than Sam's but makes far more money than Sam's does without including Walmart, and Costco is loved all around the world and recently opened locations in France and Spain. It's also huge in Japan, Taiwan and S.Korea with many of those stores alone bringing in huge numbers, I'm talking into the millions on just one store alone. Sam's has nothing on Costco and the literal only thing to compare on is they are both member only stores. Costco is light years ahead on everything.

With Sam's, you have curbside pickup so you order through the app, and go to the store, and they bring out your merchandise. The Sam's app is very easy to use. Another feature of the Sam's app, if you choose to go into the store you can scan and pay for your merchandise from the app, and bypass the checkout line altogether. The only person you have to interface with is the person at the exit door. For now, I am going to stay with my Sam's membership but when things get back to normal I will consider going back to Costco, maybe by then, they will have Curbside pickup at my local club. Been a member at both and worked at Sam's Club. They're very similar in a lot of ways but there are some key differences. For me the most major would be selection. Costco has a limited selection that focuses around their Kirkland brand. Sam's Club, because they can utilize that Wal-Mart infrastructure so they'll have far more variety but in smaller quantities. Frozen pizza is a good example. At Costco you'll find a few options in the Kirkland brand and then one or two niche products in a single flavor. At Sam's you would have a few brands with several flavors each. I liked shopping at Sam's because they just had a broader selection but they closed the Clubs where I live so all we have is Costco now. I'd also say what's killing Sam's Club is poor corporate leadership. Too many people in their chain of command view the job as a step towards their next position and so they're only looking to "do their time" until they can leave. Poor planning for their innovations was another issue, they'd bring in a new initiative or technology that was supposed to streamline work or provide a benefit for the member and it would be the most poorly implemented thing ever. I can't count how many things got announced, barely got running, before they were cancelled. Again that really reflects on the bad leadership.

The Sam's Club app vs. the Costco app is the only reason I am switching to Sam's Club. It is so much better it's crazy and you can check out with your phone -- that feature is huge -- sure beats waiting 30 minutes to check out at Costco. If Costco would get a better app with mobile checkout, I'd never go back to Sams Club.

I’ve been a Costco member (well, the parents bc I was a kid), then a Costco employee while getting my degree and I whole heartedly respect this company. I learned so much about business and the consumer because Costco is open and honest about their business practices and philosophies. Thanks to Jim Senegal, the OG Costco ceo. He was real and humble. He’d wear his name tag when visiting the warehouse and talked to employees like friends. He wouldn’t take a typical CEO’s salary so those millions would go back into the company and employees.

I started as a Sam's Club member because there was no Costco presence in the Greater Pittsburgh region at that time and I was completely unaware of Costco. I quit Sam's due to their terrible treatment of their employees and shortly thereafter moved to Van Nuys where Costco rules the market. My fiance, at that time, convinced me that Costco was a whole different beast and yeah, the employees were so much happier and helpful. Ten years later she's out of my life (yay!) and I am still rocking Costco. BTW, Kirkland products are not only lower priced they're usually as good and sometimes far better than name brand goods. And their pizza......

I got good memories of Costco. as a kid our mom would take us there to basically eat lunch while she shopped. Getting all those free samples. We had a system. My sister would go up first and take two, saying she was getting one for her sister. Look back at me from a far and leave. Then I would go and do the same thing. The employee is to busy and doesn't care so we got extra. My favorite was when they had a mini doughnut machine going and would give out like three of them. It was like a small little field trip for me and my sister. Plus we would also hand the receipt to the person at the front and they would draw a smiley face or picture on it.

The only thing about Costco I didn't like is that none of the aisles were labeled, I'm sure that was incentive to get you to travel down all of them and a key part of getting you to buy stuff you didn't come there for!

So, so true. I am surprised no one else point this out. I have such an easier time at Sam's than at Costco because of the aisles being labeled.

When I was a kid, we had Pace and Sam’s Club. I don’t know when the Pace closed, but I do remember when Sam’s Club closed. It was the mid 90s and Costco came to town. Everyone said it wouldn’t last since we already had Sam’s Club. One year later, Sam’s Club closed down. To this day we still have Costco. I have a Costco membership, along with their credit card, but I honestly shop at Smart & Final more often. Mainly because the lines at Costco are crazy. I only go maybe once every two to three months.

When I had my kids still at home, I had a Sam's membership because it saved me tons of money. We don't have Costco where I live and I'd have to travel a considerable distance to find one in my state... probably about 2-3 hours. I haven't renewed my membership in nearly 6 years. I had no reason to buy stuff like that with my empty nest.

I just got off my job at Sams Club as I’m leaving for Space Force boot camp very soon... the environment is very much like Walmart, though I couldn’t complain much. Pay was great for my area, and they worked around my schedule. The environment can be painstakingly numb but was thankful to work there as I built up my savings.

I've had a membership for both of these companies. Costco is the clear winner for a few reasons. First, they have more brands that I easily recognize. Second, the overall feel of their respective locations was completely different: At Costco, it's not as obvious that you are shopping in a warehouse. At Sam's Club, you were in a warehouse, you knew that you were in a warehouse, and it was obvious that nothing much had been done to change that feeling. Costco was also a warehouse, but it was made to feel more like a "regular" store, albeit one with really high ceilings. But the biggest distinction between the two, at least that I've seen, is the location of their warehouses. While Sam's was operating in a less than desirable location, a location in which even the parking lot seemed to be lacking in safety and security, Costco was located in a much nicer area. The Costco warehouse and the businesses that surrounded it shared a massive parking lot that was well lighted and also had a reliable presence of security and, more importantly, police patrols. So, the overall experience of driving to the warehouse, parking, shopping, and then getting the loot properly stored and ready for transport; all of these parts of the experience, and the experience overall, fall decisively in favor of Costco. But that's just my experience with the two businesses.

You can't mutter under your breath almost distractedly "employee wages probably have something to do with overall satisfaction, it's THE reason people LOVE COSTCO, it's because it's well run, you can return anything, there's value for your membership, and they treat through liberal working conditions, pay, and benefits, their employees how everyone who shops there would want to be treated if they worked at COSTCO. And that's it. There's the determiner.

I have been working at Sam's Club for a year and I love it. Supposedly Costco treats their employees better and Sam's Club treats their members better... in theory. I feel this is very location dependent though; each store will differ slightly I would imagine. I have been treated extremely well at Sam's Club and can't imagine being treated better to be honest. Many of the members at Sam's Club are members at Costco I have found. I hear members talking about how they just came from Costco looking for an item they didn't find then came to Sam's, and vice versa. Is one better than the other? I have no idea. I would honestly bet, as I said before, each location is different. One Sam's in one area might be better than a Costco in the same area, and another Costco in another area might be better still.
@Tropicanax7x2 жыл бұрын
Like with every job, the management team makes a huge difference. I've been at Sam's Club for 3 and a half years, It's my 3rd retail job. My last job was at Target and the only reason I left was because I relocated and there wasn't one near me. The first one was Fleet Farm. Awful, out of date, did not care about their employees. I've been unhappy and happy at Sam's Club..it really depends on your team. I started as a merchandiser and I've been in Curbside for some time now. The merchandiser team changed and it got frustrating being the only one on the team that actually cared about the work they did and having to clean up after everyone, so it was either change positions or leave retail. My family shopped at Costco when I was younger, I think their selection is much nicer than Sam's. But Sam's is getting better as the years go on, we will see where it's at in a few more years.

As a member at both, I would say that Costco treats their members better. Never once talked to a rude Costco employee and they have the best returns policy. I will say though that the Sam's Club employees have been passive-aggressive to me a few times, they are night and day better than Walmart where sometimes they are actively hostile to you as a customer. The one area Sams Club wins on customer service is speed of checkout but that is largely a function of how few customers they have in comparison.

Costco opened a distribution center near me a few years back. Everyone in the warehouse was an $11.00/hr part timer with no benefits. The only full timers were supervisors and office personnel. I was hoping to get on in transportation but they said that all of that was handled from the district office in Virginia. The only transportation people on-site worked for Swift.

I manage a liquor store in St. Petersburg, FL. We used to buy all of our tobacco products from Sam's Club, probably about $10k worth every 2-3 weeks. They really cut back on their service though. Used to be able to order online and pick it up, then they quit online ordering and you had to go to the nearest location and pick the product yourself, then they quit letting you go inside the cage and made you give a list to an employee who picked it themselves, then that location quit carrying tobacco so I had to drive an extra 10 miles to another Sam's Club where it took me a good hour for the employee to pick the products. I just gave up on them altogether and started ordering from a local distributor who would take my order and deliver the product straight to my store. Much better service for way less hassle. Haven't looked back.
@LatitudeSky3 жыл бұрын
Same thing at my local Sams. They ripped out the tobacco cage and replaced it with pallets of urinary incontenence pads. There is no freaking way that stuff sells better than smokes. I like Sams but they make some baffling decisions that seem not planned out. A memo from corp comes down and bam, a pallet of Members Mark knockoff Depends replaces smokes.
@SrAntonio3013 жыл бұрын
Isn’t it always cheaper to go through a distributor for things like tobacco anyways?
@mynamehappy3 жыл бұрын
@@SrAntonio301 It really depends, certain items were a few cents more than Sam's, plus I have to pay for delivery. I get bulk discounts sometimes from the manufacturer though since I buy so much, something not available at Sam's. I'm also in a desirable area so my high mark ups make up for the extra costs. Overall the distributor has worked out way better, and I no longer have to deal with Sam's crappy customer service.

I work at costco and can say there are a lot of small and large differences between us and Sam’s.. Knowing what I know, I have no plans to shop at the competition even is I didn’t work for costco. My goal was to work at costco and when I got in, I felt on top of the world. :)

I'm not a fan of membership stores. I've used them both before. I don't need items in bulk. And if I do want something from either store, I have friends & family that let me shop with them. Also I'd rather give my $ to Costco, screw Walmart/Sam's!
