Reminds me of Ardie Savea a bit. A forward with speed and low centre of gravity that fights for every inch. England need to support his talent sooner rather than later so he can be even better. The All Blacks wasted a couple of years tbh not giving Ardie a red hot crack when he was lightning in 2015 and 2016 for the Hurricanes.. and then made him really work for his spot with limited time off the bench. They said Ardie was too small to be a forward.. and yet he's broken 23 tackles in 5 games this season for thr)e ABs and made 6 clean breaks. Give the guy a crack and see what he does with the opportunity.. they will not disappoint.

I will say yes. I shall also explain myself. I'm a South Wales Valley boy living in exile (by choice). I lived and worked in Exeter for a year at the end of the 20th Century. It is a wonderful city and whilst there I followed both of the City's main sports teams. It was cold that winter (98/99), but I saw potential. To this day, I still keep an eye on them. With great pleasure and pride (of being a distant fan) I celebrated their great wins, particularly this year's double. Baxter started it by being Mr Exeter, the Simmonds brothers garnered faith from that and stayed committed to the City's cause. Both good enough for Lions, just for dedication. Lifelong Scarlets supporter.

A top top quality player. Maybe better suited to playing on either flank at international level. He has the speed and dynamism. EJ needs to get in him the squad to have a closer look at him. The fact that he hasn't says more about the of EJ than the ability of Simmons. At the highest level he is not going to break multiple tackles like he can in the Premiership. I can see him in a Pocock type role for England or the Lions.

Absolutely he should. Ludicrous that he hasn’t been involved with England yet. My suspicion is that it’s going to be a typical Jamie George situation, where it’s so blatantly obvious to everyone in the world (apart from Eddie jones of course) that they’re the best in the position in the country and yet have to literally get selected for the lions before they can even get into the 36 man squad. Absolute madness. Same could be said about his brother, joe and Marcus smith.

I think the main problem its that Eddie Jones need specific types of players for each position to create the style of game that he wants for England, if you think of Simmonds and Vunipola they are.pretty different, i would rate Simmonds above Vunipola but maybe Eddie needs just a bulk strong carrier who can hit people at 8 more than Simmonds who's everywhere on the field and gets involved both in attack as defense, he already has Curry for that, i mean thats just my guess, stil think is madness but what can i say, he made England great again so...

Vunipola might not be quite the player he used to, but there’s still no doubt that when he’s got the ball in hand he has the entire defences attention

@philipeafroboy I'd love to see some footage of simmo going back. However, if the argument for Vunipola is that he draws more attention and carries harder, it seems off as Sam makes ground all the time, he bumps out of tackles. Just because he doesn't run in a straight line at the first person he sees doesn't mean he can't get go forward ball. Vunipola is a very good player but Sam literally scores tries for fun and fun for fun. Doesn't matter how you do, as long as you go forward aha

I'm going to say the thing everyone is thinking but doesn't want to say... How many stars do we see at club level that just prove too small for international level? Christian Wade jumps to mind! Simmonds is quality, but against the best in the world, and defences so tight they don't leak water, I think he gets dragged into an arm wrestle he not only can't win but gets shown up. Eddie Jones has looked at him, weighed him up, had him face the likes of Underhill, Vunipola, Curry etc and found him wanting.

Look at every England side for decades and you'll see a familiar theme: a player that is under performing, but kept in the side, or one that is uni dimensional: Deglanville Carling Robshaw BV Farrell To each coach they represented their vision on the pitch, which worked, (until it didn't), but do these well coached players have the ability to adapt? The players being picked come from a side that cheated, was caught and now those players are put of form. This is a chance to recognise that England can afford to play like a team that enjoys playing, rather than just winning. If they don't, France are going to run riot (with a decent referee), and no amount of apologies will save Eddie's job.

He’s the best 8 in England, but unfortunately, because of the way Eddie Jones wants England to play, he’s not getting selected. I suspect Gatland will be thinking of a similar power-based game plan. That compounded with the lack of international exposure means he probably won’t even be considered for the lions, let alone called up. It’s a shame because he’s brilliant and I think there will be more than enough power across the front five and the centres. Simonds could be really useful

@@lydiawebster5229 No doubt thats part of it but I think there's more to it. Eddie JOnes has said before that Billy Vunipola is not the type that reacts well to competition from within the squad. Translation...Vunipola's ego is being accommodated maybe. I hope not though. Same thing might partly explain Dombrandts absence. The fact that BIlly V is the currently the best at that position doesn't explain why all these talented number 8's are being locked out of the squads and people like Curry, who plays in a different (i.e less threatening?) position are acting as cover.

Its interesting though we often, logically, designate positions based on a players physical attributes rather than their vision and awareness. If we didn't account for this Jonah Lomu would have never been played on the wing. I for one see the field better when looking in from the wing then from a midfield position. Maybe Simmonds does so well because he sees the field really well from 8 and then has the physical attributes to exploit what he sees
