As an Exeter fan I obviously scream out for Sam, but don’t let’s be ungracious to Billy. He has served England very well in recent years, and we have won many games on the back of his ability and effort. We all know that if Sam was 6’4 then there would be no question in recent years, but he’s not, so the solution is to pick a taller wing forward, such as Courtney Lawes, and then all bases are covered.

Lol to the people saying sam can replace Billy V, watch his games for England and youll see billy sucking in 2-3 defender to tackle him and he still gets past the gainline, this creates space for the backs (which is forwards job in offence), Sam is fast when given space but when hes against a wall of defenders he gets pushed back by a single defender hence why Eddie hasn't picked him, he could be a great 6/12/13 but i dont think he has the physical abilities to play 8 (for england obv)
@coppo92613 жыл бұрын
he's too small for 8 if he wants to play for Eddie's England. He's quick and can break the line but it's because Exeter play him as a utility back rather than a traditional 8. If we replace Billy at 8 wit Sam, we lose our ability to make big carries. That's what happened in the 2018 six nations, he was good against Italy but against Ireland he looked lost, constantly waiting for the ball as a back instead of playing like a forward. Great player, but there's a reason Eddie won't pick him.

@icedbunn893 жыл бұрын
You’re very right. He’s a good player, but he doesn’t solve the backrow balance issues as he’s too one dimensional. You’d have to either drop Underhill or Curry to play him because you can’t have a backrow all 6’1 and under so you’ve created another issue. England need a lineout back rower, then you can put Curry to 8 and keep Underhill

@expressoevangelism803 жыл бұрын
Please be aware that there are very subtle differences between each position of the back row, just because a person can play a good number 8, does not necessarily mean they play their same natural game at 6. In simple terms, my son was very much like Sam playing at 8, but they started a match with him at 6, and he was doing OK, at half time he moved to 8 and scored 3 tries. There’s something in that.

This is an interesting debate - personally think Simmonds should be playing in England back row but not at 8 - I would play him at 7 in style very similar to how Wales use Tipuric and Australia use Hooper (Ben Earl to be fair could also be used this way) - this would mean Underhill, T Curry and Willis (on return from injury) to concentrate on applying their fetching and defensive skills from blindside flank (Willis, T Curry and Underhill being more 6.5s than out and out opensides imo to begin with ) - finally the no.8 would have a combination of some of the close quarter power of Billy but with more athleticism and the ability and sufficient height to act as the 3rd lineout target (negating the need to use a lock like Lawes at 6) - I'd be looking at a player like Dombrandt or a rejuvenated Nathan Hughes for this role. In short its changing the balance from the Eddie Jones template of either two 6.5s + Billy or a 1 lock at 6 + Billy + 1 6.5 at 7
