I think they mean it in the sense that if you want to be a respectful person, you respect people’s pronouns. “Preferred pronouns” is not a thing, it implies that it’s ok to intentionally use incorrect ones. Of course something like that can’t truly be mandatory, it isn’t physically possible to enforce people to speak a certain way 24/7, nor should it be (we should respect people’s autonomy) but yes for lack of a better word... I mean, I can’t think of one. Probably best to just say “pronouns” instead of tacking on “preferred”.
