*SAM SPARRO on the meaning behind 'Black and Gold'* : "I was feeling totally lost. I was making cappuccinos when I felt I should be onstage singing. That track came from looking up to the stars and seeing myself as a tiny speck in this infinite solar-system. I wrote it in 10 minutes. It just came to me one night when I was feeling lonely and wondering if God exists''

Hard agree. A shimmering gem amongst a whole lot of garbage. Existentialism slipped through into the mainstream pop culture because of how well written, catchy and cool the song is. Not that most people appreciated the lyrics at the time, they just tuned into the chorus and thought it was another love drama song.

@@snoutysnouterson I don't think I've ever felt lyrics hit me as hard as these. I'm trying to think. I am obviously exaggerating, I must be, I must have other lyrics that have hit me harder (it's just I can't think of any rn) but I'm making a point lol. I notice many artists will always have that ONE awesome, stand-out song. And as I'm sure you agree, a song can be awesome, but, it's made a masterpiece by the lyrics. I will say, it's a shame we didn't hear more than we did from Sam Sparro, but I'm glad he dropped this song while he was so... temporary. I'm sure he's more than happy with the fact that this song was just so profoundly stunning and outstanding to many many people.

@@lauraaa2222 I agree, I've never had lyrics from another song hit me as hard as these, marble hall's by enya is probably one of the hardest hitters, but black and gold beats it by a fair margin. It's 12:58 am March 8, 2023 I'm laying in bed and this song comes to mind after 13 years. I sang this song to a group of friends that kept asking me to sing it back in the day. Oh man, this song brings back memories of the good old times when life was just starting to transition for me mentally, socially, and financially into the woman I am today. Alexus aka Lexington loved for me to sing this song. At first, they marked me then they loved it because it was the relief of freedom and they began to understand the true meaning of this song.

It's about existential doubt, the stars hung in the dark of the night sky. If vision is validation...then material science removes any chance of us finding a meaning in existence as it's all just an accident, a quirk of physics. But why then can we think and imagine a world beyond our senses. It's a fucking amazing song, elevated to a work of genus by being funky as all get out.

Like this isn’t even a joke. It’s sooo timeless. I can see this being released in the 80s and even 12 years later! And the themes are still relevant and always will be! seeing how people will always have doubts about their faith!

Found this song, thanks to 2009's "Obsessed" film. It stuck in my head, and I literally became obsessed. Bought the CD, the next day. Love it!!! 💜💜💜

Faith in God.... filled to the top with fear that it's all just a bunch of matter. Black sky, gold stars. If he's not here, the stars don't even matter. If vision is the only validation then most of his life isn't real!

Mmm If the fish swam out of the ocean And grew legs and they started walking And the apes climbed down from the trees And grew tall and they started talking And the stars fell out of the sky And the tears rolled into the ocean And now I'm looking for a reason why You even set my world into motion 'Cause if you're not really here Then the stars don't even matter Now I'm filled to the top with fear That it's all just a bunch of matter 'Cause if you're not really here I don't want to be either I wanna be next to you Black and gold, black and gold, black and gold Mmm I look up into the night sky And see a thousand eyes staring back And all around these golden beacons I see nothing but black I feel a way of something beyond them I don't see what I can feel If vision is the only validation Then most of my life isn't real 'Cause if you're not really here Then the stars don't even matter Now I'm filled to the top with fear That it's all just a bunch of matter 'Cause if you're not really here Then I don't want to be either I wanna be next to you Black and gold, black and gold, black and gold (Black and gold, black and gold, black and gold) Mmm (black and gold, black and gold, black and gold) Black and gold, black and gold, black and gold, oh oh 'Cause if you're not really here Then the stars don't even matter Now I'm filled to the top with fear That it's all just a bunch of matter 'Cause if you're not really here I don't want to be either I wanna be next to you Black and gold, black and gold, black and gold Songwriters: Jesse Rogg / Sam Falson / Samuel Falson

He is literally taking romantic clichés in reverse like talking about stars in order to apply to a breakup while simultaneously having an existential crisis.Plus using wordplay like "matter" genius. I used to love this song as a kid but now I love it even more.

Nothing romantic here, just wondering if god exists.

Such a beautiful song, the way it speaks of Genesis, the way darkness lives with light, the love and appreciation of seeming opposition, but speaking of the pursuit light and dark shark for each other. It reminds me of my life seeking God, the way I find the remnant of light, like fading warmth. Its there, somewhere, everywhere, not cold as some may believe, but like a sign or trail of blood that draws me.
