Sam was very close with his father, who struggled a lot with mental illness. Unfortunately, Sam's father took his own life late last year. There is a live version of this that Sam performed 2 weeks after his father's passing which is absolutely incredible (and incredibly sad). Phones in Heaven is another one of Sam's songs that is worth checking out. It was written shortly after he lost his father. Great reaction to this beautiful tribute 💜💜

Sam has a voice that captures and holds your attention to every note and every word. His passion and pain come through whenever he sings. Always so beautifully delivered. The loss of his father, who took his own life , was a heartbreaking experience. ❤❤❤❤

Sam Tompkins is awesome, and so damn brave! He wrote this when his dad was in a bad place mentally but made it through. Unfortunately it didn't last more than a couple of years, when Sam's music started to get popular and two weeks before he sold out the Hammersmith in London, his father passed away by his own doing 😭😭 Oh Sam. I feel for you.

Thanks for your thoughtful reaction. 🫂❤ What a heart-wrenching song. Really hit me hard. 😢 Check out the description to the video for the background. Sams father passed away in November last year. Sams has a great post on X about it. Love to everybody out there ❤. And as Sam says in that post: "fucking talk to each other, man"

Glad you watched this version first. I’m so glad they included the call between Sam and his dad. Glad he was able to write this song for his dad while he was still with him, so he could show him how much he loves him. As others have mentioned, his dad lost the fight shortly before Sam was scheduled to go out on tour. I remember him sharing in Instagram posts the struggle he was having determining whether he could do the tour dates, but he was really glad he did. He was overwhelmed by the amount of love and outpouring of support he received out on the road. It doesn’t make the loss any easier, but I know his dad would be so proud of him. So definitely do the live at Hammersmith Ballroom version of Hero. It’s so powerful ❤

So hard watching this now, knowing that those struggles caught up with his Dad. I hoped do much for them that they would find a way through it. Sam said in an interview that he was once close to 'checking out' and Ren said that while it may end suffering, it also ends any chance of seeing things get better. And that resonated long enough for him to get help. Sadly his father didn't find his way to stay. It's just so sad, for all of them.

That is just so heartbreaking. And having dealt with many of these situations in my own life, its frustrating as well sometimes. A mix of emotions.

He wrote this for his father after he’d seemed to have overcome his inner struggles. Recently his father took his own life. If you want to see a heartbreaking emotional live performance Sam Tompkins Hero performed at the Apollo Hammerstein. This performance was after losing his father.

He wrote this for his father about 5 years ago when it seemed his father had successfully overcome his demons. I saw the footage of Sam performing this Live at the Apollo Hammerstein which was beautiful and moving. He performed this after his father took his own life.
