Octopus balls (Takoyaki) straight off the grill are the BEST! You'll see stands all over Japan selling them, and properly made ones are doughy with a tiny cut of octo tentacle in it. The ones with Tonkatsu sauce + bonito flakes + mayo drizzled on it are excellent 😘🤌

I tried some fresh ones in Osaka later on in the trip, and LOVED them! :)

I was in Japan in June (before it was too hot!) and visited Hakone as a solo traveler. It was great and a super easy trip to do on my own by train. If you get to the Gora station, you can have your luggage delivered to a local hotel. I took the bus down to the lake and started the loop of sites (lake, cable car, volcanic area) backward. Such a well worth it side trip! I found staying in Gora to be useful, at actually having a peaceful time, since you were able to see the town and sites early and late after the tourists had left.

Hi! I'm trying to navigate this trip for my family without a guide and have a question. How did you get from Owakudani to the Pirate Cruise? Did you have to get back on the ropeway or is there a departure point there? Also, which ropeway station did you start at?
