Dire Straits - On Every Street, On Every Street (1991)
Lyrics:
There's gotta be a record of you some place
You gotta be on somebodys books
The lowdown, a picture of your face
Your injured looks
The sacred and profane
The pleasure and the pain
Somewhere your fingerprints remain concrete
And it's your face, I'm looking for
On every street
A ladykiller, regulation tattoo
Silver spurs on his heels
Says, what can I tell you as I'm standing next to you
She threw herself under my wheels
Oh it's a dangerous road
And a hazardous load
And the fireworks over liberty explode in the heat
And it's your face I'm looking for on every street
A three-chord symphony crashes into space
The moon is hanging upside down
I don't know why it is I'm still on the case
It's a ravenous town
And you still refuse to be traced
Seems to me such a waste
And every victory has a taste that's bittersweet
And it's your face I'm looking for on every street
And it's your face I'm looking for on every street

@@253jacksonrhoads1 I never really played the guitar myself but I understand that it can be very sore to pluck the strings of a guitar with your fingers and not having something to protect yourself. There are some other pretty special guitarists out there too, such as Sir Brian May, Mike Rutherford, Slash, Chris Rea and Eric Clapton.

We are in 2024. A Brazilian man, far way from his home, seating alone in an Irish pub, in a raining day. Alone. Just him and his pint of Guinness in a lost pub in Dublin cold city. This song starts to play in the pub. A 5o and something years old man alone in a pub find rejoice and starts to remember the first time he heard that song. He was what, 20 and something years old? It doesn't matter: that song brought him back so many good memories from a very long time ago. God, what a wonderful experience. How good was the feeling to remember the past, the friends, the memories from a very long time ago. Thank you for sharing this beautiful music. Probably I'm wrong with that, as I was born on 1994, but as long as I listen to this song and watch this video I feel like I miss those days that I never lived or at least I lived with no consciousness of it. Sometimes I wished I was born earlier just to be young or adult enough to be able to see a live concert by people such as Dire Straits, Queen or Michael Jackson.

The outro is as close to perfect as there is. The basic, yet powerful, beat of the drums, the simple melody Mark plays throughout, the subtle piano and bass but the part that does it for me is the haunting tones of the pedal steel guitar. Absolutely brilliant. I get goosebumps every time I listen to it. I could listen to an infinity loop from 2:51 on.

This song is a gorgeous masterpiece (one of many for Dire Straits imo)--Knopfler's haunting gituar melody and beautiful lines like "the moon is turned upside down" to denote the chaotic, overwhelmed feeling of painfully loosing love, and "every victory has a taste that's bittersweet" which, of course, is deeply true about adult human experience--nothing is either good or bad, just happy or sad, but tinged with its opposite emotion from the memories of having experienced the other side of what your feeling now--Dire Straits is no longer, but hope that Knopfler continues to share his genius with us

Daniel Häusser i TOTALLY love both..SOOOOO MK...Same song taken to opposite ends of emotions. I originally had this on cassette playing in my ears while bicycle riding every morning. Except when icy or raining when I set out. There is no way anyone can sit in the saddle after 2:50 .... knowing what was coming & how it is about to build... I used to get my pedal beat to match the tempo ... the CRAAAAAAZY BUILD TO THE CRESCENDO... which doesn’t end liker so many tracks of others would ...Nope, it just progresses to a lower volume & diminishes ... still riding with me as I chased the distant horizon.

the outro of this song is so famous, that the brilliance of verses probably don't get enough credit... I'd be honored if some Dire Straits fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performance of ON EVERY STREET on my YT channel in tribute to the genius songwriting of Mark Knopfler. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital enhancements. Thanks and RESPECT to the legends.

I have no idea how this ever worked out but years after this album came out(i missed it somehow), i purchased a cassette of it for my car(an old car) and for a song which talks about streets, this song sounded utterly amazing whilst i was winding through forested roads down in beautiful Somerset, England...not far from Cheddar Gorge if my memory serves me well. TAKE THIS SONG AND THAT TRIP ON A BEAUTIFUL SUNNY SUMMER'S DAY IN SOMERSET, ENGLAND......and i swear it will change your life. It bloody well changed mine. I became a songwriter that day...and still am. Now i'm changing other folk's lives. What an honour. Kindest regards, Sonic Foxx.

On every street. This song is one of these I like to listen to on my way home from work, late summer nights. I walk in the dark along the sea shore with my earphones and I submerge myself in this musical atmosphere. It heals me from stress, it guards me and makes me feel more alive. Sometimes I come home and the song has not finished playing, I stop in front of my doors and just wait for it to fade away till the end like it does, with such grace. I just respect this work of art and I'm grateful for its existance

A former boyfriend got me hooked on Mark Knopfler's music. We have not had any contact for almost a decade. I stumbled upon 'On Every Street' several years ago and fell in love with it. As 'fate' would have it, recently I spotted him at a gas station quick mart... right in front of me in line waiting to pay for stuff. We exchanged glances, but then POOF! he was gone! Never to be heard from or seen again!?!?!

This album deserves much better ratings than what some reviewers give it. For one thing it's beautifully recorded-an audiophiles dream- and more than half the songs are first rate. If you get this cd, or an excellent download, sit back and listen to the ballads: recorded sound doesn't get much better than this. And btw: thanks for creating such a good video for this great song!
