Lauren Laverne just played this on her BBC 6 Music show and it stopped me in my tracks. Gorgeous. Doesn’t appear to be from an album? Sonically it’s reminiscent of Lucius, which is who I thought it was at first.

One year later and I'm still listening to Bloomsday at least once a week and I had the great pleasure of attending a performance by Samantha Crain at the Golden Dagger in Chicago. Just she and her little Martin guitar. Such a marvelous singer, and such a great songwriter, a true star. THE VOICE of 21st Century America.

As I read the verses to this song, and the tragic mess it seems to allude to, I think of the Buddhist poem with the line "light and dark oppose one another light a front and back foot in walking." And this in a song that incorporates the children's Sunday school verse "this little light of mine, I am going to let it shine." And we have traces of James Joyce and his Irish holiday, Merle Haggard, and the witches of the Massachusetts Bay Colony (maybe?) all thrown in as well. What a great songwriter! The riches of literate poetry in songs are hard to find, but here they are.

Had the opportunity to see her open (and perform with) Anaïs Mitchell at the 9:30 club, and wow, as nice as this song is recorded, she is definitely one of those singers who shines brightest on stage, completely different soundscape. Go see her live if you have the chance!

I just read the lyrics for the verses, which you can find on Samantha Crain's Bandcamp page, and they are deep and dark. And fun and joyful, too! A great deal of emotion and vision condensed down to three little verses. Amazing to hear the song again knowing the lyrics. The very first tiny leaves started breaking out of their buds on the younger trees along my bike ride to work listening to Bloomsday. It all aligned in my heart and my ears and it's gorgeous. I feel lucky to be here now.
