@@NemoHolemaker It's really a spiritual ritual. It gives you extreme pain, and if you are able to breathe through it you'll transcend into a sort of higher state. Pain is just an illusion and once you are able to not only realize that but experience it then you'll feel a great sense of freedom. It's a reason it's been done in pretty much all cultures through human history. However, in the west today we've been so poisoned by Christianity and the general public seems pretty afraid to experience anything that is abnormal to them. It's easier to judge someone and tell yourself it's stupid than to seek understanding and discomfort.
