Marcus, thank you so much for producing this.. it's really helped me a lot getting the basics across to the members of Zürich School of Samba here in Switzerland... we're very new, but we hope to be ready to perform later in the summer. When we do I'm gonna throw up a video. :-) Thanks and axé, Dave

Wow, first of all, it sounds amazing! Also, the instructions are very informative. Question: do you think that knowing how to play the djembe is an advantage if you start playing samba?

Great tutorial-video, and great and positive energy - thanks! :) (a whish: being inexperienced with the rythm, I would be glad for even a little more instruction on how to do the first pattern, that on the Caixa)

Ola @bradhamilton1965 Thanks for your comment! I use that same analogy too! I also say that another way to remember is that the drums are named after their pitch The lowest pitch drum is called Primeira and so on... I am so glad to find educators like yourself! Keep up the great work! Lets make the world play samba and know a little more than the simple beats? =] Marcus

Hi Damien! Glad you dig the video... We will make a Samba Reggae video class that will help you build the technique to play this Samba Enredo rhythm! Stay inspired amigo! This may seems challenging at first but with a few days practicing, I am sure you will get it! Keep us posted please and let us know if you have questions Marcus

Here is a summary of how I teach it. The primeiro plays on 2 and 4 and is the lowest tone. The segunda plays on 1 and 3 and is the middle tone. The primeiro is called "First" because it plays first, meaning the "pick-up note" which comes before the first "1" that is played by the Segunda which is "responding" (Reposto) to the Primeiro. The third (highest tone) plays on 2 and 4 and in between, or just in between. Still confusing for beginners, but we do what we can!

Fala grande fanorzero! Valeu mesmo pelo comentário! O lpmusicgroup ta dando a maior força pra divulgar os ritmos do nosso país! =] Que bom que voçe gostou do video de Samba Enredo! Voce ja viu o de Samba Reggae? Por falar nisso, nao vejo a hora da LP lançar o Timbau! To com a mão coçando! kkkkkk! Abração e espero te ver um dia destes amigo! Marcus

Claudioconga - the lowest surdo is indeed called the Primeira, and indeed it hits the 2 and 4. (Like Marcus said.) Go to any Rio de Janeiro escola-de-samba, you'll see. The primeira is lower pitched and hits the 2; the segunda is higher pitched and hits the 1. I've been studying samba in Rio for years, and have heard this from dozens of Rio mestres, as well as from all the top players in North America and Europe. Look me up next time you are in Rio and we can go check it out firsthand! :)

I have had this same discussion many times. It's confusing because in Samba de Enredo the Primero (first, biggest) Surdo usually plays on the Segunda (second) beat!
@Grooversity11 жыл бұрын
Ola Marcello! Abracao e mantenha contato! Marcus

Oi Claudio! Valeu pelo comentário! I appreciate when good people leave messages like yours so we can start an educated discussion People have been sending comments through facebook about this common misunderstanding. Surdos are named after their tuning and not the beat they play=] As you know, most players are street drummers and often dont know how to count beats Please spread this info to everyone and hopefully we will stop this misunderstanding Muito respeito pra vc também amigo! =] Marcus
@Grooversity12 жыл бұрын
Yeah @alilexa310! It is confusing but it makes sense if you think this is a street rhythm. I have seen street players playing on beat 2 and calling it beat 1 =[ I try to not say much and hope people see this video or talk to educated people like you As you can see this video has 1 dislike and it is from someone that insisted that I got the names wrong even after I explained it We all make mistakes but lets be humble and nice Please spread the word n lets end this common misunderstanding=] Marcus
