BTS: Vocal Ranking

I feel like non-fans are way too mean when discussing BTS' vocals and ARMYs are way too protective. The truth is that BTS are not the best vocalists in K-Pop, but honestly, they don't have to be. To me, there are two types of singers: singers you listen to because their technique is impressive and singers you listen to because they sound interesting/unique and/or convey emotion very well in their singing. BTS fall into the second category and that's perfectly fine. The amount of diversity in their timbres is in my opinion quite rare to see and it's one of BTS' strongest points.

Totally agree they are not professional singers i am an army but for me groups like exo, nuest and btob are better vocally wise. Do not understand me wrong bts are very good singers they know how to use their voice they are very versatile and have unique vocals what i appreciate. It is almost the same with bp. Not professional singers but unique vocal tones. I kinda understand that fans want to protect if someone tries to bash their faves. But some fans are just overprotective and also take constructive unbiased kind criticism like this to personal and they think that this person try to bash them. Or even worse they make themselves deaf and do not want to see the truth and being unnecessary defensive and attack u for ur opinion. It is one thing to bash someone down and another to give constructive criticism in a very respectful way. Stans must stop thinking that their faves are the best in everything they do. Just bcuz they r for ghe stans it doesn’t mean that it is a fact.

I agree... and because stans can be really harsh and protective, it's hard for people to actually say this kind of stuff. One of the reasons I avoided BTS for as long as I could, basically until Dynamite was so catchy I couldn't dislike it, is because the stans and hype for the band are drastically exaggerated... and frankly I don't like their music style as much as other bands. They aren't the best singers... but they are some of the best ENTERTAINERS and PERFORMERS and that is what they care about.

really, true fans will be those who accept their bias for what/who they are. no one is perfect, but everyone has their unique selling points and strengths, there is always room for improvement. Fans who are blind to some flaws that their biases have is only doing more harm than good. Good or bad, it's what makes our biases just them and we should love them for who they are! I too feel that BTS doesn't have the best vocals but they stand out and are talented in their own ways.

Actually.... sorry, I know this will be an unpopular opinion, but..... I would place Jimin 5th and Jhope 4th. I think Jimin has an amazingly unique voice, but his voice is very shaky and lacks technique, which I fear will end up hurting his vocal cords. Jhope’s voice, to me, is SO underrated. He has great potential and is amazing at harmonising, which can be difficult. And when you hear Jhope sing seriously, the technique is quite good.

Most of the channels with any rankings say everything to please the viewers, avoid opinions that some people won't agree with and use a few smart words to sound more legit or look only at official positions in each group. Fake love chorus are C5-A4 belts. BTS vocal line are not belters therefore it is difficult, especially when they often use a softer approach (falsettos)

@@mineandow3298 falserro is not a softer approach to songs, falsetto is when a man tenor especially sing above their range. Women do it too,,, so C5, depending on their range, for the song with proper training would be easier. The problem is technique. You need to know how to approach it. B4 for a tenor should not be a oroblem with proper technique. That is the issue with some singers.

Jungkook has natural vocal talent. A famous singer in Korea who also gives vocal lessons said that Jungkook called him in 2019 and asked for vocal lessons. Jungkook told him that he never had vocal lessons before. At the time I tought it made sence because BTS was a hip hop group from the beginning. But recently Jungkook said that he hasn't got a lot of vocal lessons on purpose beacause he doesn't want to lose the colors and character in his voice. I believe it's the same for the other members.

Finally someone who mentioned that Taehyung's singing in a tenor key all the time. It's not that the other members aren't impressive for hitting high notes like they do, but because Taehyung's a baritone and does it more often by design since his voice type is lower, it's always really impressed me, but no one I've seen has mentioned it before now.

I think so too that Jungkook’s voice is a lot bigger than he lets on. There are definitely instances of it like with the recent cover of Jungle for Coca Cola or when they were recording the adlibs for In The Soop’s theme song. Also I’ve had the honor of going to a lot of BTS concerts and that’s really where you can witness some of the things he can do. There are many times I hear “growling” or a really powerful and strong sound during some of their songs that resonate above the screams and music thru the venue and I would have naturally assumed it was either V or one of the rappers but each time I’m surprised to find out it’s Jungkook. I think you miss things from watching them on screen because it all depends on the camera as it usually focuses on the person singing and not who’s doing adlibs and stylization in the background but at a concert you see & hear more. I think he’s comfortable where he’s at and he likes to stay there because it’s easy for him to harmonize with any of the other members but I definitely think he can do a whole lot more. Whatever his reasons are I respect it and I love and support him but I don’t think anyone truly realizes his full potential yet, maybe not even he himself.

It could have been better if he belted it live, but it's rlly hard, and we don't know if he can actually pull it of in mixed voice.

Tbh, the fact that he had to apologize for putting Jimin as the weakest vocalist is very sad and proves the point, that a lot of Army are toxic as hell and will try to cancel people, even when they’re right, for not putting their faves on top even if their faves aren’t as good as they want them to be. I feel like I speak for a lot of armys if I say, that we sincerely apologize for those toxic armys. As a non-fan of BTS, I kept hearing so many people criticising Jimin's vocals that I just assumed he was the main vocalist. I was shocked to find out he was a main dancer. I think it'd be good if BigHit let him sing softer killing parts, kind of like Seventeen's Jeonghan, and let him have more dance focus instead of so many high notes.

I knew jk would be no. 1 with reason. He is very versatile.He can hit high notes and low notes.He can sing basically any genre. He does most harmonisations and adlibs. He does it all basically and even helps other members and I think he is also redefining what it means to be main vocalist.A lot of Kpop stans main vocalist is only the belter but Jungkook really stepped out of that box and proved that there is more than singing than just belting and that’s something to acknowledge. I do think Jungkook can belt quite well considering he hit stay gold chorus high notes with such ease. He did it the most effortless of all and in so what he belts at the end too. I do wish to hear more from it but I don’t think he likes it as much. He is only 23 but he can do so much that singers of his age can dream off. He improved a lot in 2020 and I think he will continue in 2021 and step even higher.I can’t wait to see how he will sound when he is 25

true, even if jungkook doesn't put the highest or lowest notes in kpop (although i totally think he could make it if he tries it, after all he is the golden maknae), what I like the best about Jungkook is how rich his voice is, that could only be possible if he has a healthy technique and despite that most of the time Jungkook stays in his confort zone in terms of range, he has the best tone texture which adds to the expressiveness while singing, and I gotta say he is the best idol in that.

Honestly Jungkook is redefining the main vocalist role in kpop. Often we are fed with the ideas of main vocalist as the belter, the one with widest range and high notes. But Jungkook did it in his own way and you can feel he is everywhere in the songs because he also does the other vocal works like adlibs, layering, etc. He is so versatile that he can literally cover any members' part and he does it effortlessly too. Edit: btw please don't feel scared of armys. Lots of them are reasonable and nice so yeah, feel free to do more videos for them.

I totally agree on your ranking actually. It’s hard to put jimin 4th, but I really do agree. A long time ago (maybe like 2015) I would have put him 2nd. But he kept using his voice incorrectly for years and it hindered him a lot. For any of you who don’t know, jimin only trained for 6 months before debut unlike many idols for train for years. I think it was very wrong of bighit to put those kind of technically advanced higher notes on him constantly when he hadn’t received the training many idols had. Idk that’s just me. But in 2020 I noticed a lot of improvement with his consistency live and I think he and bighit are realizing what his voice is made to do and how to use it properly

To add a couple more notes: Hobi is definitely a singer who I feel had tons of potential should he decide he wants to explore it someday. If he trained and worked on singing, I think he could easily match up with jungkook. Bts definitely don’t have the best vocal line in kpop, but I think their strong suit is that they have 4 vocalists and they are all unique from each other. My brother who has never even heard much from bts can point out their different vocal textures

I'm so happy that you decided to make a new bts ranking video and i'm glad you cleared out the old video. To be honest the previous video was...something. I think it was kinda obvious you were going with more 2016-2017 bts ranking. But again, since you cleared it out it's all good, you're probably my favorite youtuber that does these rankings and you're great at explaining, i'm glad you decided to take on bts again. About the video, while you were talking about Jimin compressing his voice, i realised that because of this when he brings his voice a little higher it gets really whiny and sounds pleasant but when it's a bit more higher, it startes to sound really....tired?pushy? And about taehyung,i think since he's so used to using a breathy voice with a lighter sound, when he brings it a lot closer to his actual comfortable range he starts to struggle and can't bring himself to a full-on heavy place. But he has a wonderful voice and i hope we can see him do a classical song in next years, he has just the voice for that(yes i'm obsessed with That Clip from Black Swan Behind The Scene) Also i was wondering, is Jungkook going for a lot more technical singing in the last years? Before 2018 honestly he always felt like he was going with the flow with an incredible talent and little technique, always choosing style but in recent years i think he improved a lot and he's just. Yes he's not a powerhouse singer but god damn, he is without a doubt one of the most stable idols i've ever seen.

Jimin just doesn’t have the stamina he use to have. I prefer his old voice because his now voice isn’t bad he just has to do all of these extreme dances and his stamina isn’t that great. This is perfect, I listened to RM's solo work and in 'everything goes' it finally occurred to me that despite the lack of technique his voice is really nice! Jimin's voice is so beautiful but I agree, it is so small. He sings in notes that sometimes are not natural to his range and so forced that it is obvious he is struggling and he is not consistent in his notes a lot of times. Jin's voice is powerful and he can sing those high notes really natural. I think that all the notes that Jimin sings so obviously forced could work better with Jin, because of his powerful voice, but they don't give him enough credit. V's voice is so interesting. And yes, the number one is obviously Jungkook, his voice control is just amazing!

I personally find RM's voice in his solo songs super soothing! I never would've thought Taehyung would be 2nd but after hearing your reasoning it absolutely makes sense! Jimin in #4 is where he belongs, as much as I love him (he single-handedly got me into Kpop), but it does make me sad that he did not take care of his voice from the very beginning....I think he really was at #2 at the time of their debut but he forced it too much over the years.

This is a kind, but very good analysis. The comments agree more than I expected. I'll add a few things: Jimin overuses scooping and vocal fry so much that it compounds the sound production issue you mention. Frankly, Jin outright shouts sometimes (e.g., in Dynamite and Butter, even the studio version). Finally, on behalf of baritones everywhere, I do appreciate you crediting Taehyung for managing the excess high notes he's given as well as the great falsetto/head stuff. Honestly, the producers are cruel to them. They really should knock the keys of their songs down a bit so that they all sound better and can accomplish stuff live more reliably.

I just want to add that Kpop, in general, is usually alot higher than American Pop music. And the BTS boys love to push themselves, they hold alot of control over their career. They've said that they write and produce, they only do what they're comfortable with and have each member play on each line of a song to find the one who sounds best. Of course, they can improve and they're constantly working to be their best. Just saying, the problem isn't their producers because they are their producers. For example, their album BE was completely self directed.

@YOU TUBE stability and Inconsistency are because of him being a baritone. A baritones range is 4 semitone lower than a tenor so the notes that would be comfortable for jungkook will be in the belting range for tae. I agree with pitch issues and he has been working on tongue tension(fly to my room and butter were better). But yeah the pitch issues are hard to ignore so jk is 1st in my list as well

and you know when they sing it on tour they will either give the highest parts to Jin instead or crack up the autotune and let Jimin try and fail night after night and feel miserable. that's what they do. assuming they don't let him lip-sync it. when they should have given more training to them all and let them sing more comfortably in their zone. they should have let Jin sing the higher parts in the first place at least instead of ignoring him as usual, though i hope they go easier on him than they did on Jimin too.

despite being pretty airy, taehying has the best diaphragmatic engagement in the group, because of his consistent diaphragmatic engagement he does support better than jungkook as jungkook prefers to sing stylistically, he usually doesn’t like to sing with the proper engagement for any good support that he might be capable of. taehyung however struggles with throatiness and lowers his larynx too often, and for a baritone his lower register is pretty underdeveloped and he can’t even maintain tonality that low because of his lack of a forward placement, but from his lack of technique to jungkook refusing to sing with a proper technique the gap between the two is very small to the point that they are interchangeable

I always love your vocal rankings and how you delve into the technicals, I even watch for groups I don’t necessarily love. On a side note, I’d love to see a Onewe + Oneus vocal ranking. They are brother groups(one’s a band with three vocalists and the other a boy group with six). I think you’d really enjoy some of their voices. Yonghoon(Onewe) in particular is like god tier. I rarely leave comments on YT anymore but I just wanted to applaud you for this video, I love it so much. Your opinions are so well argumented, and I might be biased because this is my exact ranking too, but they make perfect sense to me. Hobi is easily and by far the best singer of the rap line, and while personal preference might taint some opinions, your ranking is just flawless imo (while I love all of BTS, Taehyung has my favourite voice, but I still acknowledge that Jungkook is technically a better vocalist (meanwhile I love his voice as well, so it's a win all around for me)). Overall BTS might not be the strongest vocalists in kpop but the character and uniqueness their voices have make them my favourites. BTW massive props for stating your honest and unbiased opinions. I have to agree with everything you said in this video. Like most Armys, I am a bit protective over BTS, but I can't deny that their voices aren't always perfect and it wouldn't be fair to expect them to be. But even so, I can acknowledge that they have a few flaws in their voice here and there. As for the comments you made about Jimin, I'd have to agree. His voice was actually my favorite when I first started stanning BTS and had only heard the studio versions of their songs, but once I started watching live performances, his struggle to stay on key was evident. I am in no way labeling him as a bad singer, but I do think it would be better for him to sing in a range he is more comfortable in which would be songs like Promise. In all honesty, it's because of that that I dropped him as my bias-wrecker and switched to Jungkook. His voice is very reliable and like you said it has the most control. I myself like to sing and so when it comes to finding artists to "bias" I do put a lot more weight on the vocal aspect. Overall I really liked your ranking/review of each of the members' voices and I know you know a lot more than I do when it comes to singing. All of the rankings were fair and had evidence to back up what you were saying.

I think I agree with you, actually. Each of the members has his important role in the group, there are stuff they’re the best at, all of them are talented and essential, but of course there are differences between them regarding certain things. I love how you always accentuate the strengths as well, and express yourself almost in a careful way, to avoid hurting any feelings. So thank you for that. 🥰 (Also, I hope you won’t be attacked. :'3) However, there’s one thing I’d be able to argue with slightly (and I’m not even JK biased): Jungkook’s vocals. As you said, he really is more of a soft type of singer, however I do think he’d have the ability to belt if needed. BTS just simply doesn't have those kind of songs. I'm proud of Jin. Dude's improved so much since No More Dream.😂 I think what makes BTS appealing is how the vocal line has pairings with eachother and how the vocal line almost echoes the rap line. BTS might not have the best vocals in K-pop but they do believe they have the best rap line.

This is the best ranking so far. V has a good voice, baritone. Some armies saying Jimin should above V. I think Jimin doesn't use his natural voice and it's sound to tight for me. It cracks sometimes and it so unstable. Don't get me wrong its all about my opinion.

Jimin biased here, so first of all i burst out laughing when you began with " Ok listen army..." I FEEL YOU LOL. Second of all, i can't help but agree with you, his voice is truly addicting but like it better when he doesn't belt out his note. I'm always conflicted when i listen to lie but holy shit i'm addicted to that song at the same time. (I do think it be cause of the emotion of that song, you hear the struggle, the pain ? And some part of the song are just brilliaaaant) I tend to prefer promise for example, he sound so lovely there. (And the comfort tho ❤️)

Each vocalist in BTS is SPECIAL!! They are unique and perfect! Each of them can bring goosebumps to you...Personally, jin's vocals are my favourite... Jin always brings a feeeeel to me when he sings!! That's the whole point of a singer according to me.. He is highly talented.. Can't believe people are actually blabbering that his vocals are weak! As someone who loves to sing casually but has no understanding of singing technique, this series is super interesting to me, thank you for making it! Also, I'm Jimin bias and I love the unique sound of his voice, but I absolutely buy the reasoning and can agree with it. Liking someone's voice is a personal opinion that has nothing to do with how good it is technically, and you also made a very balanced analysis highlighting the strengths and weaknesses.

I agree with your rankings especially for Jimin. He had the shortest training period in BTS and they couldn't afford the best voice coaches back in the day to begin with. If you watch JK, V, and Suga with the incredible vocal coach in American Hustle Life they all get better so quickly because she's such a good coach. There are a lot of times I wish Jimin had a lesson with her because I feel like she would've been able to help him at the start of his career and therefore have more technique now. One thing I will say that I haven't seen anyone else mention is I feel like your analysis of Yoongi's (Suga's) voice while not inaccurate is a bit outdated. He's been taking vocal lessons and he has grown a lot vocally in the last year. We got to see a lot of his improvement in BTS In the Soop and the Festa Karaoke booth that I sent you.

Jimin could have reached the main vocalist level if Bighit didnt force him to sing out of range so many times. I felt because of that it deteriorated his vocal chords. TBH i was genuinely surprised to find out Jimin trained for less than a year! He naturally had a lot of vocal talent and if he was trained well he could have been one of Kpop's top vocalists. Imagine if Jimin went to a vocal focused company like SM, he could be an ACE like taemin a main vocalist and main dancer combined. It's so stupid how bighit is buying companies left and right yet wont invest in good vocal coaches? If your artists dont have a solid vocal technique its going to hinder their chords later on!

I know bts have been improving rapidly vocally, and they're still going to be better and better every year. They also might not be the best vocal line out there in terms of technique, but here's the thing. I absolutely love the style and the colour of their voices. Their voices are so special and unique and versatile, and they compliment each other so well that even if they don't have the best technique, I don't think anyone can sing their songs better than them. Ever. It just won't be the same.
