I have 2 cayannes. Known for the drains in the wheel well getting clogged and flooding the inside. Causes the abs, psm, air suspension, and radio to go crazy. Need to remove that carpet, dry the wires and inspect and unclog the drains. Both sides.

The radio”PCM” needs replacing. About $300 used. Air suspension is usually one of the height sensors or the compressor needs a rebuild. The rebuild kit is pretty cheap and takes an hour or so to do. Someone abused this car for a lot of years and it needs some love. Let us know what else you figure out.

KNOWN ISSUE Under the driver side carpet there is wires (run front to back) they oxidize, result all your issues. Air suspension, diffs. Bus systems get all crazy when the resistance vary. You might get the gearbox loked in P also. Cowl drains get clogged, water leaks in. Same on touareg. So please before you do anything. Check out the wiring. In the fotwell. Mine was really rotten the wires black rotted in the protective casings.

Yup, the driver seat was the giveaway. Anything foreign is a giant nightmare when it comes to wiring. Mercedes used biodegradable wiring harnesses way back in the day on their bullet proof models lol. Smart has a real nice issue water will find its way in under passenger carpeting where battery is. Overtime that drain will clog eventually you’ll flood that computer out. Mini and Volkswagen both like to solder their tail lights to the contacts. Usually a new tail light unless you got the tools and small hands. Sometimes you get lucky but wiring is not fun. I had a mint 87 Benz omg I loved that car. Was a real nice car. Probably drive that over my 2013 Mini S any day. Stalled nobody could figure it out. Fuel Pump relay. I soldered one twice and replaced it. Car could of come with a soldering Iron. It’s a known issue. Not many know about that intermittent stall or no start. If you got a W124. That’s almost a guarantee or over voltage protection. Although a W124 is an over engineered bullet proof car it’s almost always electrical. At over 200k owned one for awhile drove nicer and better and I even took it on 1,000 mile trips 25 years later lol. Mercedes execs will admit that car is over engineered but you’ll have to know the wiring. Lol. Sold that car to someone who shipped it to Poland. Point is electrical ain’t fun. I always say OEM or better when it comes to electrical. I see guys at Costco buying lead acid batteries when the car came with AGM it’ll work. But unless that cars coded lol. May give you a hiccup or not last. AGM charges and drains differently. When I say over engineered it means the car lasted longer on repairs than the manufacturer wanted it too. People don’t understand this. A refrigerator only costs 2-10k based on the fact the consumer dosent buy it regularly same as a mattress. They gotta get a 1,000 percent mark up to justify the fact they won’t see you back on market for awhile. That was a W124. Benz actually admitted it and called it a mistake. People seem to think high end or more money means more reliability. Absolutely not the case. Reliability is usually up to chance. Everyone of these manufacturers wants your shit to break sooner or later. Dyson makes a solid product. Very expensive. Can last. You’ll be back. Apple. Same thing. A machine from 2006 could run the latest version of macOS. Apple wants you back for the next model. Lol. The minute apples sales dwindle two options. The device needs to break faster or cheap out on build quality and charge less to maintain the same margin or take less profit and sell for less to entice more volume. Lol. They’ll probably do all 3. I use to say this to rich people in sales. You can’t really buy quality. If it existed they’d be out of business. 10k Apple Watch gold. Overpriced and obsolete. Life expectancy from a consumer and a manufacturer are largely different. Gillette was another good one. This guy came up with a cream. This is no joke. 100% real. Basically you never have to shave if used daily. He was gonna sell it. Here’s what happened he sold it to Gillette. Gillette shelved it and destroyed it. Intentionally Razor blade purchases are more profitable and they don’t last as long. Their could of been other issues as well. But selling the cream kills a billion dollar industry. Manufacturers aren’t your friend. That’s how you can fix these things cheap with a little know how.

When one goes bad, the whole system shuts off. Airsuspension might be the height sensor or compressor. Tranny needs new oil and a flush, should do it, when not, well, expensive. Also I would do a engine oil flush and clean out the oil sump snorkel filter, because on old, not well maintained cars they tend to clog up. Better safe than sorry in that point...:D A new Xtrons or Avin android headunit, a proper cleanup of the whole thing and checking the engine, and it should be a nice car. Should.

I say save it. I’m currently restoring my own 2005 cayenne turbo. I’d recommend getting Durametric or using VCDS to scan for the root causes of the issues. Brakes: The brake issues may be a vacuum issue like everybody else is saying. There is an electric vacuum pump by the coolant reservoir that may be bad. There is also a vacuum tee behind the engine that can cause issues. Suspension: if it goes up and down, but doesn’t stay there, your compressor is most likely ok but you have a sensor issue or a leak in the system. It’s really a guess until you scan it. Also, at that mileage, your air struts are probably toast. The front ones usually go bad first. There is a rubber bushing at the top of them that goes bad and causes a jarring ride. Transmission: the transmission on these can have some valve body issues which causes harsh downshifts but what you are experiencing sounds like low fluid or old fluid. Changing the fluid can help immensely. Don’t buy the expensive Porsche fluid, the transmission was actually used in a lot of Toyota’s and will take Toyota T-IV fluid. Broken exhaust manifold: your dropping the engine out of the bottom for that one. There is a guy on one of the forums that got a turbo off without removing the engine, but it looked harder that just dropping the engine. One last note... from your brake calipers it looks like you have the factory performance kit. This was actually a turbo s before they made the turbo s. This gave the car 500+ hp, stiffer suspension and bigger brakes. The best way to tell is if the front rotors are 380mm w 6 piston calipers. If you need new rotors they are not available after market and are $1000 each.

As a former 2003 Cayenne Turbo (955) and 2008 Cayenne Turbo (957) owner, that thing is in rough shape. Coming from an ASE certified master technician, good luck. If it really does need exhaust manifolds, you’ll have to pull the engine. You’re getting close to the mileage for stretched timing chains, which means pulling the engine. Cylinder scoring happens will happen to all of these eventually, which means the engine is destroyed and you’ll be sending the whole thing to the junkyard. Replacing the PCM/radio with an aftermarket isn’t bad. Most likely the air suspension issue is the air compressor. You can replace just the piston ring for the air compressor for cheap yourself, there’s a guy on eBay that sells them. As far as the suspension goes, check out the lower control arms, they most likely need replaced. Also the cardan shaft/ center support on the driveshaft always fail on these and will need to be looked at. Honestly this thing looks like it was neglected like crazy and will likely be a huge money pit, but it should let you make a ton of KZbin repair videos. Check out the rennlist Cayenne forum for info on these.

Filipe Gomes I’m not sure what your definition of “minor” is, but it’s different than mine. Pulling the engine to do chiming chains or any other engine out repair is a minimum of 30 hours of labor by an experienced Porsche mechanic and requires a special jig that independent shops are not going to have. You also have a decent potential for cylinder scoring at any moment which will leave you with a car that is destined for the scrapyard due to the cost of engine replacement/repair. I didn’t even get in to the exploding plastic coolant pipes/failed starters and torque converter seals because the pipes have likely been replaced by now due to the mileage. They eat tires like crazy (20,000 miles maximum) and you’re lucky to get 15mpg. Don’t get me wrong they’re not all bad, there’s a reason why I owned two up until very recently. They drive like a sports car (at least the 957 with pddc) they can go through a foot of snow in the winter, they’ve got loads of power and will throw you back in the seat like you’re on a roller coaster. If you’re going to buy one and can live with the large threat of cylinder scoring, buy a well maintained one in good condition. It will cost a little more up front but it will save you a TON in the long run.

Stop running that PISS oil the factory specs for these things, and drain it every 4000 or less. BMW spec 10-60 full syn, with a heavy zinc content is the cure for what ails you. The oil galleys in these things are large enough to handle it. Anything less and you’re dancing with the devil IMO. Viscosity and oil pressure are your friends. That’s the issue here. We can wax poetic about poor engineering, temperature fluctuations, etc. At the end of the day you’re running what amounts to a race engine, on Toyota Camry oil. Fuel injection, and turbocharging technology have improved massively over the years, but metallurgy, and the basics of these engines have not. High Specific output = Thick Oil Unstressed Grocery Getter = Thin Oil This isn’t complicated. I read all the service bulletins, and keep up to date, but you need to take certain things with a grain of salt in the modern world. Oils are no longer specified by what protects the engine best. They’re spec’d by bean counters and attorneys. Modern oil specs have more to do with CAFE standards, and EPA regulations than anything else.

B K I’m. Going to have to disagree with you a few things. It is widely believed that a majority (but definitely not all) of the cylinder scored vehicles are from northern/colder climates and the majority of the wear/damage is happening on startup. Putting in that thick of an oil is the last thing I would want to do to a Cayenne Turbo in a cold climate like Minnesota. I extensively ran shell t6 full synthetic and changed it every 5,000 miles (which is about twice as often as recommended in the owners manual by Porsche)on my 957 Turbo because it is known for its extremely high zddp (zinc) content, so much so that they don’t recommend running it in vehicles with catalytic converters because it can damage the cats if your vehicle burns even a little bit of oil. It might have helped extend my engine life (who really knows) but at 165,000 the dreaded cylinder scoring on cylinder 5 decided to appear one morning out of nowhere. I don’t think that it’s something that can be avoided completely (especally in cold climates) and I wouldn’t be surprised if all of the effected years develop cylinder scoring eventually. I don’t think there is anything that I would do differently with the 957 if I was given a chance to start over (except maybe move to a warmer climate). It’s just a flawed design that was supposedly fixed later on 2009+, I don’t see any type of oil being able to prevent it forever on 2003-2008’s.

This 100%, plus get it up in the air. Wouldn't bother trying to save if it has serious rust. The potential good news (?) is that a lot of the probs with this car might just be related to the water intrusion. It's not uncommon for the wiring harnesses along the front driver and passenger foot wells to get corroded from moisture and cause all sorts of strange electrical issues. If not too bad, might be able to fix cheaply.

No man, when you trade a cursed car the curse duplicates, when you sell it it curses anything you spend the money on and if you reuse the parts from the cursed car it transfers the curse to the repaired car. You can only lift the curse if you burn the car with Russian low octane gas.

The brake fluid can only be bled/changed by the dealer or shop with the proper tools and software, it’s impossible to get the air out. Driveshaft carrier bearing can cause bucking, Porsche recommends full driveshaft replacement but the DSCCS by EPS is an inexpensive easy and permanent fix. All of the fluids need to be changed, transmission fluid is due at 150-160k, brake fluid should be done every 2 years, and engine oil every 5-8k, check the rubber diaphragm under the cap on the right valve cover, that’s part of your ccv, if it’s torn you can order just the diaphragm Porsche only sells the complete valve cover, check all of the rubber and plastic hoses you can find in front of or around the intake manifold for cracks, remove the pre-cats behind the turbo using a catless downpipe, fix the drain, and check the wire harness. As long as you have good compression and no cylinder scoring properly maintained Cayennes are extremely solid vehicles. Ours was our tow vehicle, towed in excess of 8k lbs w/o issues. Adjustable right height is nice but I’d swap steel springs in, it’s not the repairs on the system it’s the $2000 tires every 15k miles that will get you. Set the steel springs or coil-overs to zero camber and you can get 40k + from tires, just make sure the springs if not OEM are rated for the tow weight.

@@2Skills4u - "park my car in front of business" - Yeah right, most every new Car Dealership has the City pass/adopt temporary short term or NO Parking in the most visible front dealer zones (they figured out that there's always somebody out there willing to park a "Lemon" in the most visible areas)... Now for a quicker method at resolution: I once had a 'ripoff' issue with a car dealer; I gave a couple of friends an old school VHS video camera, attached a fake corded microphone along with a working portable light. We then proceeded to stand outside acting like we were broadcasting from their lot. The salesman & manager recognized me (I was the guy being interviewed), so they invited us all in as long as we agreed to halt the broadcast/taping. At this point they capitulated to my demand for satisfaction ! - Elapsed time? less than 90 minutes...

Make sure it doesn’t have cylinder scoring. If it has something that sounds like lifter tick on cold starts, running rough, or blowing smoke, the engine is toast. It’s a pretty common issue with the Cayennes. Ask me how I know :(

Brake issue and hissing noise might be your vacuum line that runs between engine and air intake, I had the same issue on my Touareg, replacing the brake vacuum line fixed my problem. Transmissions in these shift weird and it's normal, once you are towing they shift perfect. Check your driveshaft support bearing, when it goes the shaft moves all over the place, easy fix with aftermarket driveshaft support. Another common issue is the brake light switch, when mine went bad my EPC, ABS, Traction, and Cruise lights all came on. If you don't want it let me know. They are great cars, slightly complicated but great. Good luck!

I looked at used vehicle once described as having "no issues". I discovered issues upon inspection. Naturally I asked what the seller considered 'issues'; he said the only issues that matter are engine or transmission. In his mind it was of no consequence the AC didn't work (in Florida, mind you), the tires were cracked and dry rotted to the point they wouldn't make it home, most of the body panels were terribly aligned, and the interior reeked of spoiled fish. Looked good in the pics though.

It's been broken for so long that they forgot the car had that feature. try check all this 1. maybe turbo problem or car exhaust pipe leak ..... 2. vaccum leak check all vaccum hose and also check Air Oil Separator this thing can cause noise and smoke 3. about brake try check brake booster hose also 1 way valve and also try check abs module... porsche problem alyws come from this Brake Booster and ABS Control Unit 4. gearbox try change oil and filter also check valve unit pull out clean it better 5. check aircon pipe maybe leak and suck water try compress air out.. 6. but if possible check all rubber seal as o-ring , fitting..

500 hp turbo motor is worth it. - get a detail guy to do a full detail. - exhaust guy to find your exhaust leak and fix it - hard shift probably need filter and fluid flush ( my e39 had that issue till i did the flush shifts smooth. Also could be a silinod had an Audi have that issue $100 for the part had them install it when they did the flush) - suspension is gonna be tough Amazon some oem replacement. - key probably needs replacing ( 40 bucks Amazon and have someone reprogram program it. Wrap the car matte blue and enjoy

My step brother had the standard cayenne (non turbo). The suspension was amazing, from soft and very comfortable to firm and sporty (compared to our Q5), all suspension adjustments were ultra smooth.

Yes I have usually for the ride height once you get to a certain speed it will automatically lower if you have it all the way up and it's the same thing if you have it lowered

As a long term owner of an ancient 928, I can say that for you, this car could well work nicely. But for anyone who isn't going to fix it themselves, I would say, "STOP IMMEDIATELY AND PART IT OUT!" Many of the plastic parts in the engine bay tend to give out over time in the Cayenne. And it's not so much the cost of the part (even in NZ!) but rather the hours required to get in there and replace it. The first time I was a passenger in a Cayenne Turbo was at a race track, and I was shocked by it. Four large guys, and in the race instructor's own tow car(!) doing track introduction, showing us the racing line, and 3rd lap giving it death. You can't do more than 2 hot laps in a Cayenne, because the weight and the power would turn the road tyres to big balls of rubber under the wheel arches. Later the same guy showed us what it could do on a gravel rallycross course next door, and I was shocked again, because I used to have a properly kitted Landcruiser. So yeah, that was my first experience in a Cayenne, and even the S model is deeply impressive. I have played in one in a muddy and stony riverbed, where it shone like a diamond. A truly incredible vehicle, no matter what you want to do with it, provided you don't care about the condition of the paint, and the wheels. If so, then never ever take it offroad - you'll do thousands of dollars of damage in minutes. The best Cayenne Turbo I ever saw had a large custom-made roof rack with a kayak, two large nudge bars up front, with a winch, and there had obviously been sheep dogs in the back seat, and possibly the odd sheep or two, and the paintwork was all scratched up, and muddy. It was 3 years old. :) These are iconic cars in my opinion. Some people don't like them, but I think they look great! And if people like you don't save them, and give them a second, and a third lifetime, then we'll soon stop seeing them on the road, and that would be a shame, I think. Porsche are a strange company, they make the same model for a looooong time - generally no less than 18 years. And that is because they do a good job at the start, defining the car they want to make, and then they spend a couple of decades refining the concept and expanding on it, until it's time to abandon the model name, or to retain it, but start from a clean sheet of paper - like the 996 was to the 993. Definitely a fixer-upper, and maybe a keeper - only you can decide, once its going like a Cayenne Turbo should: "Feaking amazing, *and* amazingly freaky."

Paul-Ivo B. ‘The Car Wizard’ is an overpriced hack. That clown charges $5000 to remove and replace an engine; not including the price of the engine. It’s never more than a 2 day job to R n R an engine, and that guy isn’t worth anywhere close to $300 an hr. He’s a $25 an hr brake job guy, if he’s lucky.
