I might be wrong but, to me, "trying to find your style" sounds like "trying to find your personality". You just don't do that. You just are your personality. The way you react and think about things around you is what your personality is. Of course you can change it, slowly and through a lot of practice and self-awareness + meditation. Your style is like that. Just like you said, it's just the way you draw, you choose your colors, what you prefer to draw...
@kimaly77182 жыл бұрын
You said your art style is like your personality.. So I'm guessing I have a variety of it cuz I can literally draw in a few different art styles 😂😂😂 can't stick with one but I definitely can still go back to it 😂
@randomtraveler41492 жыл бұрын
Yeah, style grows over time.
@Lani_wiswak12132 жыл бұрын
@@kimaly7718 well, i mean yeah. Your personality isn't going to be constantly the same either (it least it isn't for me). I react and act differently depending on what situation I'm in, and depending on who I'm with, and how i'm feeling, but that doesn't make one any less real than the other. But also, just because you CAN draw in different art styles, doesn't mean that they're all natural for you. Maybe they are, in which case it would still match the personality thing based on what I said. But if they don't all feel natural, the equivalent in personality could be if you are acting one way and are aware that's not how you usually act. Sometimes I do that too, where I'm purposefully more quiet than usual, and I limit my expression (tho I usually do end up doing this when I'm just fed up with everything lol). Anyway, my point is that I think that the comparison with personality makes plenty of sense 😂 Not that I think that you think it doesn't, I'm just saying in case :'D

@・クローズガーミン ・ ・Claws Gaming・ I'm not sure if I understood your point. What I got from your comment is that there's a correlation of personality with style. "People with X personality will have style A." That was not what I affirmed. I didn't draw a correlation between the two. I just stated that we should mental model art style in a similar way to personality. It's not something you find, it's something that you already have/is. You may discover and understand better, through meditation/practice but it is something that was there from the beginning. An amalgamation of nature and nurture. Choices and consequences. Not rigid and set on stone, but also not fluid like water. A collection of preferences and tastes. There might be correlation between personality and art style? Sure, there probably is. I'm not saying that it does nor that it doesn't. I'm just saying that it is counter productive to think of art style as something that you need to find, something that you need look for. You already have it. If that was not your point, please, tell me. So I can better understand you.

Fun Fact: Michelangelo wanted to sculpt, not paint frescos for the Pope, he ran away a couple times and I guess he was so fed up with the Pope and the working conditions he decided to paint a bunch of stuff that the Pope and co. didn't immediately notice, like that one guy mooning god 😂
@inisipisTV2 жыл бұрын
Michelangelo was a sculptor and an architect who is tasked with designing and building the new nave, altar piece and scultures for the pope. The story goes that famed artist and architect Bramante was so jealous of Michelangelo that he convinced Pope Julius II to commission Michelangelo to do Fresco work, something the artist isn't known with, in order to embaress him. But Pope Julius II is very sure of Michelangelo's talent that he gave him free reign to paint what he want on the ceiling of the Sistine chapel. It's quite noticable the Michelangelo struggled with medium early on, the first figures he started to paint are quite small when viewed from the ground. He learned from his mistakes and worked on the other figures making them bigger and giving consideration the perspective when viewed down below.

My Grandpa passed away just the other day - he had some sort of illness that ate away at his lungs which eventually made it so he couldn't breathe anymore. Right before he died- he learned of a job I had been offered - a job that'll earn a LOT of money for my art - and just before my job offer - our Nana had found one of his paintings he made in his earlier days in an old pawnshop. Which his painting found and reclaimed-- and hearing about me, -- he went and bought more paints and new brushes. He said that I had inspired him to try and get back into it- even though he was on Hospice and his hands wouldn't stop shaking- I'd inspired him to try again.. I have his brushes now.. he never did get to open them and use them. But - this year -- I want to make him proud and go forward with being an artist- and be worth that inspiration. -- I just wanted to say that Sam you help inspire me - and I'm so grateful for you. And for so many more people out there- I just wanted to share this post and just get this out into the universe - that i'm so grateful to have people to look to - and it's been a sort of comfort for me. Idk what I'm really saying here- but just - thank you. R.I.P Sidney Vail 1956-2022

5:20 Don’t press harder with the colored pencils. Color lightly and use a colorless blender or layer the color multiple times.
@brandonhogsten48262 жыл бұрын
With colored pencil you have to build the layers slowly over time. If you press hard off the jump you burnish the paper... meaning you mash it flat and it makes it smooth so it doesnt hold pigment as well. This makes it harder to further blend and often leads to those little white specs that you cant fill in. If you want it to blend smoothly, she was right about that being a terrible tip.
@ehsome2 жыл бұрын
10:57 ok but let's not mix up art with design there are a lot of areas where both a designer and an artist should be able to deliver a product (digital or analog) that the client is going to be satisfied with. such as: banner design, poster design, website illustrations, paintings for the office etc. but design is more than art being "geometrified" and turned into a product. it does not only focus on visual appeal, psychology and colors but also partially on marketing, user experience and understanding and offering what the clients (of the person who hired the designer) are looking for so yeah brand identity is definitely something a business owner should not neglect but also know who he needs for what (imo) any artist (with knowledge of the digital tools) could do the executive job a designer does (the drawing/finalising part). but when it comes to choosing founding elements (color palette, brand identity, style direction, consistency guidelines etc.) a designer might be more knowledgeable. that's why they usually work together in studios

Yeah I got sick of the "change your art style" advices (if we can call it that) because it feels more like a personal gripe the person has with your art. Practicing realism is good advice, but only if the person who asked for feedback NEVER done that. If they're already in the process, you should just tell the specific body part to focus on improving instead.

Facts about artists: *da Vinci* (and many other famous artists) used Camera obscura's and Camera lucida's as drawing aids. They both project light on to a surface. They physically traced a 1:1 projection for their sketches. Ever wondered why art of Napoleons exhibition of Egypt is so accurate and realistic? Because a Camera Lucida was used to project a 1:1 image onto a drawing medium. Tracing is not cheating. It is a fundamental foundation of art.

Nooo Sam! I had to pause just to come here and clarify that! Colored pencils nerd here. If you press too hard on your pencil in the first pass, it will cause something we call "burnishing". That means you will "seal" your layers. After burnishing, you can no longer add layers on top, so you can't effectively blend. When blending colored pencils, you should work patiently, layer by layer. Burnishing is a cool technique and you can get amazing effects with it, but only when it's something you do purposefully.

As an artist with arthritis and carpal tunnel i can say (for me personally at least) changing the way you hold your pen really does help. Ive been holding my pen 'weird' (in-between my index and middle finger) when writing as well as drawing for several years now and i can draw for a much longer period of time before my arthritis (and/or carpal tunnel) starts to flare up too bad. I still use the 'normal' way to hold my pen when i get into finer details or if im just doing something quick, but the majority of the time i hold my pen 'weird' and can draw for almost double the length of time before having to stop. (Edit: P.s.) No matter how you hold your pen just remember to take frequent breaks and strech your hands to avoid pain. You're wellbeing is more important than that artwork youre working on. ❤

My mum eventually stopped criticizing because of course, my paintings were really good, just lost the creativity. I still cannot get over the need of being perfectionist and not being good enough, but in the meantime I worked my way back to allow myself to be more free with what I am doing. I am now an art director. But I can tell, having that kind of mums is not funny.

I was here just chilling enjoying the video and then the guy with the mom ripping up his paintings unlocked a forgotten memory of my own childhood. Thanks, now I don't need the hypnotist.

when you talked about being a perfectionist in your past art i thought about a specific stroke on the neck of your most recent piece's character that i loved. i just love seeing the strokes on your art idk what's wrong with me

Sam ,if you press hard with a color pencil you make it harder to layer that’s why most people do it lightly and gradually do it harder
