a tip - see more of any project before commenting (negatively). Great content, and must be very valuable for those in the trade.

Very interesting video, I liked your critiques of portfolios. I think it would be even more interesting (to me) if you critiqued the projects themselves more, and why you find them interesting or not. Cheers
@SamDoesDesign5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Projects will be interesting to me for very different reasons. If we have a project in need of structural packaging, then the structural packaging projects will stand out. If we need branding, then the graphics and branding work will stand out. It depends all depends on what we’re hiring for

how would you advise picking personal projects to develop a portfolio? my current role is sort of related to what I want to do in the future, I'm still learning design skills but I feel like my portfolio needs more and picking projects seems like a mine field!
@SamDoesDesign5 жыл бұрын
That’s a great question! I would say make sure you only show your best work, and make sure the projects you show include all of your skills

What should we use to evaluate our level on specifics software ? :)
@SamDoesDesign6 жыл бұрын
I’ll be able to tell from your projects! I would recommend having a list of software that you can use, and I’ll be able to guess your skill level from the portfolio. I hope that helps!
@6132-k1n5 жыл бұрын
I'd refrain from self-assessing your softwares skills, because everytime we see someone that's auto proclaimed ''expert'' or ''advanced'' in Solidworks or X software, that person ends up being beginner. If you're an expert, we will be able to tell, and same if you're a beginner. Too risky to evaluate yourself.
@RHolen946 жыл бұрын
Great video! Very interesting to see how you evaluate the portfolios. But you say you don't want to read the text. Does it mean it shouldn't be there or would you read more in detail at a later point if you are interested in the candidate?
@SamDoesDesign6 жыл бұрын
Maybe that’s just a bad trait of mine haha! I would potentially read through it after finalising one or two candidates. But the chances are, I wouldn’t need to read those candidate’s text as the projects would have been explained in the images.
@6132-k1n5 жыл бұрын
If i can chime in, we also look at portfolios this way at my job in industrial design, and when we downselect to a few candidates, then we might read the texts a bit but we usually go straight to a phone call. No time to waste, and a good portfolio tells 90% of the story through visuals.

Hi Sam, I love your work and your videos! They are very helpful and inspiring. I am currently working on my website and I plan to use it to replace my pdf portfolio. However, I have second thoughts after seeing this video. Do companies usually prefer pdf portfolio to a portfolio website?
@SamDoesDesign5 жыл бұрын
Website portfolios are great but sometimes companies will ask for PDF portfolios to keep on record. I’d recommend keeping your PDF as a backup!

It was both informative and entertaining. Just friendly critique, sometimes you are going from page to page too quickly and it is hard to watch and listen the same time. If you cut out these parts you might have the video shorter as well.

I don’t get it, why don’t you ever read the portfolio, how do you know anything about the projects and how he has solved the problem. You’re only looking at the portfolio superficially. How it looks is all that matters
@SamDoesDesign6 жыл бұрын
Good portfolios tell the story of the projects both instantly and visually. That includes the backstory, research, testing, and outcome. If companies have 100 portfolios to look at, they won’t have time to read all of the text. I spent 30 minutes on 4 portfolios in this video which is way longer than in the real world.
@6132-k1n5 жыл бұрын
