The main reason why the PS1 uses flat polygons instead of sprites is not because the PS1 can't handle sprites, the PS1 simply doesn't have enough RAM to hold a lot of sprites (because RAM was too expensive due to an industry level shortage of silicon) Had the PS1 ever had a RAM upgrade at some point using the expansion port at the back, we could have received much better ports (the stock Saturn doesn't have that much extra RAM than the PS1, so the expansion cart is really what makes the difference) Palettized textures take a bit less space than equivalent sprites, which was the best way for developers to squeeze in a bit more frames than they would have been able to using regular sprites. It's also good to note that sprite processors were abandoned altogether at some point (remember how when PS2 was announced many articles reported the PS2 was incapable of rendering 2D graphics at all and yet it is the 1st console where we finally started getting arcade perfect ports more consistently) While on the topic of arcade perfect ports, many Saturn ports are not really arcade perfect in terms of gameplay. Unfortunately Capcom (and sometimes SNK too) really liked to "fix" and rebalance certain things when porting their games, resulting in certain move properties being changed affecting the way some characters play, combos from the arcade version not working or some new combos that weren't present in the arcade working. Overall not a big issue for casual play especially now that there's no real competitive scene around these games but I seem to remember long threads at the old Shoryuken forums where lists of differences between all ports were pointed out (circa 2001~2003)
@SameNameDifferentGame5 жыл бұрын
I mean, it's kind of hair-splitting to say "it's not that it can't handle the sprites, it just doesn't have enough memory to load them." I'd say if it doesn't have the memory to load them... it can't handle them. But yeah, most games now use flat polygons instead of true sprites, but at the time, it's kinda weird to see them go halfway. (The reason the Symphony of the Night port on Saturn isn't that good, despite the Saturn being a much heartier 2D machine is because that's how most of the stuff in SotN was handled, and Konami didn't put in the work to redraw everything as sprites.) As for arcade perfection, as I said, I'm a filthy casual, but I thought these home ports were usually based on the final arcade revision. I could definitely be wrong, though.
@RetrOrigin5 жыл бұрын
@@SameNameDifferentGame Yeah I know it's kind of hair splitting, I guess what I meant to say is that in terms of processing power the PS1 can handle sprites alrigth but just doesn't have the RAM to hold that many sprites. It's a shame the Saturn was such a complicated machine to code for, SOTN not only suffered from the badly re-scaled sprites but also lacked almost all of the transparency effects and had slowdown. I'm also a filthy casual :) since I don't really have the time to practice most fighting games (I mostly only play SFV seriously at the moment) but there was a lot of good information that's now being lost at the Shoryuken forums. Even though as you said many ports were based on their final arcade revisions, Capcom sometimes still made tweaks and changes to the ports. In some cases like Street Fighter III 3rd Strike, the final arcade revision (990608) was recalled from arcades and replaced with the previous version (990512). The Dreamcast version is based on the final recalled revision while later ports (PS2, XBOX, PS3 and current gen) are all based on 990512.

The 4mb cart Saturn ports were arcade accurate. Some of them were just based on versions of the arcade that didn't receive wide release, before modern times with online patches I remember this issue when I played Saturn XvSF. It was perfect, with no loading after the inital load at the beginning, but some combos (esp with Storm) didn't work the same way as the arcade. That's because the Saturn game is a perfect port of the final 961023 version, instead of version 961004 that had the widest release in arcades (with infinites and unblockable setups)

Well, the "EX Edition" of the PSone versions of XvSF, MSHvSF, & MvC1 is to indicate a feature the other versions don't have...Hyper Cancels, an ability first seen in the Street Fighter EX series as Super Cancels. You can go from certain specials to supers, or from one super to another if you have the meter for it. The result is a pretty spectacular show...and depending on who you use & what you do, possibly some friendships that'll need mending. Examples: 1. Mech-Gouki: j.Hp, s.Lp, s.Mp > Scramble Gou-Punch > Shining Gou-Shock (a level 2 attack total, and given his stupid high damage, it's absosmurfinlutely LETHAL if you connect) 2. Ken: j.Hp, s.Lp, s.Mp, (Hp Shouryuuken) > Shouryuu-reppa or Shippu-jinrai-kyaku > Shouryuu Shouryuu-reppa (stylish, requires you to have two Kens and is a level 3 since it's super to Variable Combo/Crossover Combo) 3. Ken: j.Hp, s.Lp, s.Mp > Shippu-jinrai-kyaku > Shouryuu-reppa > Shinryuu-ken (level 3, VERY stylish) 4. Chun-li: j.Hk, d.Lp, d.Mp, d.Hp > Senretsu-kyaku > Hazan Tenshou-kyaku (level 2, stylish as hell, and works in XvSF, MSHvSF and MvC1!!) 5. Ryu: j.Hp, s.Lp, s.Mp, d.Hk > Shinkuu Tatsumaki-senpuu-kyaku > aerial Shinkuu Hadou-ken (level 2 and your timing has to be bloody PERFECT to get the Hurricane Kick super after that sweep, lest the opponent rolls away) 6. (From MvC1) Shadow Lady: j.Hk, d.Lp, d.Mp, d.Hp, Big Bang Laser > Assist Type Variable Cross (level 3 attack, Big Bang Laser WILL start a new combo count thanks to the stupid startup delay; for your second character, have a "Special Hero" aka Assist aka Striker aka wtfever; a rusher like Psylocke works best)

I'll agree with this. Closer than XSF and MVC1. This is however because, of all 3 arcade VS games, MSHvSF actually has the least amount of animations. For instance, for arcade versions, if you look at Captain America's walking animation in CPS2 Marvel Super Heroes VS CPS2 MSHvSF, a lot was cut. A lot of the returning MSH characters had animations cut in MSHvSF, which made it look not as noticeable on the PS1. Since MVC1 had a bunch of new, highly animated Capcom characters, the difference between home and arcade grew again. Also you may notice that the SF characters in XSF and MSHvSF for the PS1 have most of their animations on PS1, which helps, especially in MSHvsSF.

Yeah, the PS1 struggled with games that required sprites to be changed at a moments notice. Mortal Kombat 3 turned off Shang Tsung's transformations by default because the system had to slow down to a halt in order to process it. As with the loading times, that seems to be poor optimization. I have Advanced Variable Geo, another 2D fighter on the PS1, that has much shorter loading times than seen here. Granted, it's going to seem sluggish compared to the Saturn version anyhow since it's loading from the optical disc drive vs the 4 MB ram cart, but it could have been better than what it was.
@SameNameDifferentGame5 жыл бұрын
Right. Like, it was going to be worse than the Saturn either way, but it didn't have to be THAT bad.
@RetrOrigin5 жыл бұрын
The PS1 wasn't really processing anything when Shang Tsung morphed into other characters. It simply had to load the other character sprites into RAM from the CD because the PS1 didn't have that much RAM to hold all the character animations at the same time. The Saturn port of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and Mortal Kombat Trilogy have the exact same limitation. The only reason why the Saturn port of Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter runs better on Saturn is the expansion RAM cart. Unfortunately the PS1 never received a similar RAM upgrade even though it had a capable expansion port for several years (which was removed in later models)
@zanegandini53505 жыл бұрын
The fact that they did make it a traditional 1v1 fighter and it still has such unbearable load times just shows how poor Capcom's understanding of the PS1 was at the time. And that's aside from the awful compressed voices.

Have you ever thought about doing a same name different game episode on the Punch-out games? Nintendo was pretty uncreative with the titles of this series and they all have pretty much the same name the only difference being two of the games having super added to the title and two of the NES games having a subtitle added. So you basically have: Punch-Out(Arcade) Super Punch-Out(Arcade) Punch-Out(Famicom Gold Cart Edition) Punch-Out(Game & Watch Micro vs System) Mike Tyson's Punch-Out(NES/Famicom) Punch-Out Featuring Mr. Dream(NES/Famicom) Super Punch-Out(SNES/Super Famicom) Punch-Out(Wii)

Also when it comes to PS1 vs Sat CPS2 ports, they always have the character portraits relocated. Even in Super SF2 Turbo in SF Collection, you'll notice it. I think it was because of the resolution. One you should consider is doing the SF:Movie game. It truly is a case of Same Name Different game. Arcade plays completely different than console versions.
