Sega Lord X

Күн бұрын

Often a high end arcade game would need to have changes made to be brought home to consoles. Sometimes these games would be fundamentally changed in gameplay, graphics, genre, sound, art design, or all of the above. In this episode, we will look at some of those games from Sega. Hope you guys enjoy it!

Episode Notes:
1. The music for each game is from one of the games covered in that segment. The only exceptions were Enduro Racer, were I used music from the arcade Super Hang On, and I used the music from the Sega Ages 2500 Golden Axe in the opening segment.
2. I used Golden Axe The Revenge of Death Adder and Golden Axe II in the opening set to give an example of how Sega would redesign a similar game between the two platforms.
3. I didn't want to simply cover games that had downgraded graphics from the arcade version. I wanted games where the actual design would change the experience entirely.
4. This series could easily be extended to cover more Genesis, Master System and Game Gear games. Sega often would make their 8-bit versions a radically different experience.
Opening Sega theme is from Astal for the Sega Saturn. Ending theme is from Batman for the Sega Genesis. Opening animation done by Kevin Bhall.

@@SegaLordX - And yet we didn't even get a polygonal Golden Axe until Xbox 360/PS3, which basically killed off the franchise. Also, it was my understanding, the pro-polygons/anti-2D was an SoA thing. SEGA of Japan didn't seem to mind allowing, porting & producing games w/2D graphics for their home market of Japan, & yet we didn't even get an SoJ Golden Axe II : Revenge of Death Adder port. Heck! We haven't even gotten a port of the game to this day! It's like SEGA forgot they even owned the IP.

I played Jurassic Park at Chuck E. Cheese to, but my first experience with it was actually at a Bullwinkle's Family Fun Center (now called Boomers where I'm at). I also played many other awesome Sega cabinets at both those places like Star Wars Trilogy Arcade, Brave Firefighters, The Lost World Jurassic Park among a few others I can't remember the name to. I love Sega's arcade games and the 90's was such a great time to be playing any cabinet from nearly any manufacturer (Sega, Midway and Konami especially). I just wish all those aforementioned titles could've been ported to something at home so I could play them today. I guess as long as I've got Virtua Cop, House of the Dead and Sega Marine Fishing them I'm alright. :P

I've played a good chunk of these in various arcades but I never knew the name of Enduraracer until now. A Chuck E Cheese place had a setup of 8 consoles linked and there was always a line. The levels were unique and massive with some wild obstacles. The cool thing was that your bike had a gun. You could tag other bikes and destroy obstacles. The crashes were spectacular. Fall in lava? Explosion! Hit a rock? Flip over the handlebars. There was always two or three rocks in a level that flashed and when shot would give you a massive boost. If you get your jump right on a lap you could knock off the banner and get an extra ten seconds. It was a hell of a good time.

Little known fact: Jurassic Park for the Sega CD was released broken in America. If you purchased a disc and tried to play it in a CDX or Sega CD you would only be able to play the first little bit until it would crash or freeze. This completely destroyed the game's ability to gain any market share.

As a Person that grew up with a C64, Super Nintendo and PC, my first real contact with Mega Drive (Genesis) Games was with the Mega Drive Classics Collection on the Switch. From all the Sega Games on that, Virtua Fighting 2 was one of the better ones. In my Opinion, Sonic isn't really a good Figuerhead for the Mega Drive, but Streets of Rage and Phantasy Star are! I've spend most of my Time on the Switch with these Lines of Games! If you never had a Mega Drive, get those Games: Streets of Rage 1 & 2, Phantasy Star 4, Rolling Thunder 2, Turtles Hyper Stone Heist, Golden Axe 2, Shinobi 3, Monster World 4, Alisia dragoon, Castlevania Bloodlines/new Generation, Light Crusader. You will not regret those Games!

The only distinguishing thing I can remember is there were multiple weapons like swords and pipes that could be picked up and here is the key. I would also say that Shadow Dancer is better on the Genesis. I found the arcade version to have a few issues with mechanics and level design. For example, the dog works way better on the Genesis. It was nice that they did a home game that used the template of the arcade games with the one-hit deaths as a complement to Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi 3 which came later. It would be cool to see the arcade versions officially released someday for those who prefer those.

Virtua Fighter’s novelty was being a 3D fighter. I don’t get why they made it a 2D fighter.

Super Monaco GP was different from the arcade version. As a lover of multiplayer gameplay, I would even say it was better.

Shadow Dancer genesis is a better game than the arcade.. was a killer pure action shinobi game that is heavily underrated.

Great episode! Oh man eswat, I always thought it's was a dumbed down version of the arcade. But actually it looks better I'll have to try it out!

Yep, Sega's arcade experiences were incredible! Even into the next generation with House of the Dead and Crazy Taxi (RIP DreamCast). Sega understood what worked in an arcade, but during the 16-bit era they made some poor choices with the home ports. This is one of the reasons I never really like the Genesis.
