In this day and age with useless (to me, at least) mini TV retro consoles, I would kill to see SEGA drop the Mega Drive/Genesis for awhile, and put out a some kind of "SEGA Arcade Mini" console that would just have a bunch of their stuff on if from the NAOMI, Lindbergh, Chihiro, Hikaru and Atomiswave hardware. Heck, they could do TWO mini arcade consoles, with the other one focused on older titles for the Model 1, 2 and 3 boards. Besides a lot of the stuff you mentioned like Planet Harriers, Sega Super GT and Dirt Devils, I would buy freakin' _fifty_ such machines instantly If it included Toy Fighter, R-Tuned Ultimate Street Racing and Dolphin Blue (which I believe they "inherited" after the merger with Sammy) too :P Now THAT would be a mini retro-console worth picking up, imo! I really don't need the gimmicky mini-console though. I would love to see 'em just hook up with Hamster and release some Sega games via the _ACA: Arcade Classics Archive_ line. Surely, they have to be almost done with Neo Geo Ports by now :P I would gladly nab pretty much all of these games on my PS4 or via Steam for $8/pop or whatever _if they were only made available._ I don't care about tweaks like licenses needing to be modified (unless it's for the soundtrack, a la Crazy Taxi and the Offspring. Sometimes they just gotta spend the money to nab certain things) - I just wanna see SEGA faithfully re-release these games so we can play 'em. They shouldn't be so obscure. Anyway, this is an awesome topic, dude! I love seeing you shine that spotlight on Sega's vast arcade library. Someone's gotta keep pounding that drum until Sega freakin' takes notice and finally lays off the endless Genesis re-releases, haha. You're doing God's work, Sega Lord X (^-^)

@@gojohnniegogo, you must! It's so brilliant that I spent hours and hours screwing with burning a copy of the Japanese standalone version (using Windows-only software via WINE) to create a copy that replaced one of the music tracks with "Sugar Rush" from Wreck-It Ralph. This might not _sound_ like a particularly impressive feat, 'cept I had to very carefully create a version of "Sugar Rush" that lasted exactly as many CD sectors as the track it was replacing, or the game would refuse to boot 😄

Its a real shame Sega mostly ignored System 32 and Model 3 when it came to home ports, it would have been great having a version of Daytona 2 on the Dreamcast , and why Sega decided to remake the original instead is beyond me. They could have used a good Star Wars game on the system too , in addition to episode 1 racer (which really looked more like a port of the PC version)

I've been a collector of Arcade games for a couple of years now, and the bulk are Sega games. I own three daytona 2 and a star wars trilogy upright. But at one point I had one half of a Planet Harriers that was on it's last legs. Managed to get it working with pressure on the gpu sync and a stick rebuild but sold it to someone who considered it one of their grails, definitely a interested game and system but I doubt there will be any left in a decade or so due to the shotty build quality of the hikaru board.

That System 32 was a real 2D wonder in 1991, being both a standard arcade board(like a System 16) and a super-scaler board all in one. I loved playing the Spider-Man beat-em-up whenever I got the chance. I think that one is still very good. Golden Axe Revenge of Death Adder is better, though. I never did see that one in the wild. I didn't like it at first, mostly due to the default damage settings which can take your quarters in a hurry, and because the US version goes on too long by making the branching paths worthless by making you go through all areas each run through. It is a fantastic game. Beat-em-up games fell out of favor by the mid 90s, so it would have been nice if they bundled this game with the Golden Axe fighting game they did put on Saturn. It might have made both games more successful. I think I would have been excited for it then. I remember standing around in a movie theater waiting for the start of Star Wars Episode I and killing time just watching the Star Wars Trilogy Arcade game in action. It was mesmerizing. I suspect Model 3 games were difficult or time consuming to port. Not because the DC was not powerful enough. It was the early days of 3D, before there were standard APIs like now. I remember the days of games supporting specific 3D chipsets individually. I would not be surprised if Model 3 games had to be mostly rebuilt from the ground up for the DC. The system could handle Model 3-level stuff, but it may not have been trivial to do it, which is a shame seeing how many interesting things were not ported. Another great video and topic. I see why you like Outrunners so much. The arcade version looks very good.

It's cool to see how both Nintendo and Sega are masters at making racing games. The only difference is that Sega is good at making racing games with "real" cars (Sega Rally, Scud Race, Outrun, etc) whereas Nintendo is good at making "other" type of racing games, like F-Zero, Mario Kart and Waverace.

Instead of re-releasing SEGA Genesis collections (with dozens of missing entries each time), SEGA really ought to finally bring out these & other classic SEGA arcade games to modern platforms. Imagine a 3D recreation of a SEGA arcade where you walk around & interact w/3D versions of SEGA arcade cabinets, perhaps as characters from the Shenmue & Yakuza series. Not only will you be able to experience perfectly emulated arcade versions of these titles, some of which never even saw home ports, but you could play them online w/or against your friends. The game could be updated every few months with new entries as licenses are legally acquired. Add some mini-games like UFO Catchers where you can unlock collectibles based on SEGA characters & you could end up w/a SEGA history virtual museum for any SEGA hardcore gamer's dream come true.

@@KISSFan1977 There simply is no examples that prove that, for e.g SR2 was 30fps despite only having usually no more than 2 cars on screen, people will point to the Windows C.E causing overhead which is true, but Sega were very unlikely to want to show how much less powerful their then newest console was to arcade hardware that debuted in 96 albeit with slightly faster cpu clock speed on Model 3 step 2. Sega arcade hardware was almost too ahead of it's time to make cost effective on home platforms, which could be both a good and bad thing.

As a huge Star Wars fan Star Wars Arcade holds a special place for me. I first encountered it at an amusement park here in Finland and kept begging my mom for coins to play it instead of going to any of the rides in the park. It was also the very first arcade game I actually beat. Beating a home console game is one thing, but beating a game at an arcade with a limited number of coins at your disposal is something completely different. Sadly, it's been a few years since I last saw one around. I'd love to do that Death Star run again one day.

The lack of Scud Race or Daytona 2 on the Dreamcast was one of the many reasons I was really disappointed with the machine. I was a huge Saturn fan back in the day and tried to be optimistic about the Dreamcast, but I really don't like it all these years later, and I wasn't very impressed when it was new in the first place.

I, too, was a big Saturn fan when it was current. I do like the Dreamcast, but not nearly as much as the Saturn. I think it was mostly the libraries. Saturn has more of the stuff I like during a time period that suited me. DC has less of what I like and was current during a transition to 3D adventure games and story-driven games that don't appeal to me much.

Shame to see no mention of the original Spikeout!, that game was absolutely incredible and the closest we ever got to a 3D Streets of Rage that actually played well. And with all four cabs connected too! I would kill for a Switch port. And also Jurassic Park: Lost World which was one of the best licenced light gun games! Nice to see Scud Race and Planet Harrier mentioned too. Keep up the good work, as a massive Sega Fan, this channel is going from strength to strength!

It certainly does seem strange that remakes have been made for certain titles 3 or 4 times, yet the ones that got missed the first couple of times are still outstanding for any re-release at all.

Sometimes its not the licensing of obvious trademarks. Sometimes third party assets or even software or technology are licensed for development, And when these contracts dont include ports on other than arcade systems, there is no big chance for a conversion.

Revenge of Death Adder, Daytona 2 and Outrunners are absolute works of art that need to be preserved in a home release! These are all good but especially those three :D

Model 3 games needed to be completely reprogrammed for the Dreamcast. That's why they preferred to just work on an almost perfect conversion (and quite fast) from Naomi games than dealing with the Model 3 games, that would've taken double or triple the time.

7:38 YESSSSS!!!! I would play that game almost every day when I got out of school and my mom took me to the mall to eat. I go so good I could pass it with two quarters (did the same with time crisis 2). I am so happy I was able to experience the US arcades in the late 90s and super early 2000s before they finally died out. I remember the day I went to the mall(early 2000s) and the Time Out arcade was closed down. One of the worst days of my gaming life!

Emergency Ambulance is another that should of hit the DC especially after the success of Crazy Taxi. A British DC magazine claimed that a compilation of Emergency Ambulance, Jambo Safari & Brave Firefighters was gonna come out but never materialised. Tho not an arcade title the non release of Propellar Arena always baffled me, i can understand why the DC version was canned with its timing but why it never later appeared on Xbox Live Arcade or something after the drama died down is beyond me.

Cool video, man! I've noticed we think the same way about Sega Model 3 arcade games: it doesn't matter if they are over 20 years old, they will always awe me with those graphics and blistering 60fps goodness! You also mentioned some degree of frustration for some games not being ported to the Sega CD, like Golden Axe the Revenge of Death Adder, but I don't think they'd look good on that system... though the hardware boasted the scaling and rotation capabilities, they were severely underused, and when they were eventually used, it was nothing at the caliber of System 32's awesome sprite capabilities. But still, It would've been great to have seen something being ported to home consoles anyway.

Star Wars Trilogy Arcade was one of those games I always wanted to play as a kid, but was *always* occupied. There wasn't as much putting quarters up back in the late 90s/early 2000s, but best believe kids were waiting on queue for their chance to fight Darth Vader

Loving your content man... i used to have every sega going and i started obviously in school collecting. Sega was my only friend as my social skills were weak and i dreamed of the day when model2/3 arcade would be in the home... cut to the present day and a loss of job and license causes me to sell my entire collection (and my turntables alas i kept the vinyl) - although im still not very well off financially and very regretful that i had to sell the collection (wasnt just sega, had other things like jag64 etc) - and even if i started again i wouldn't be able to catch up with my old catalogue... thankfully we have emulation and i now "own" all the arcade games i dreamed of back then on my phone... and think about this - if i went back in time and told my young self that in the future on my phone i can get arcade perfect (within reason of emulation) downloaded from the air, regardless of what model arcade board it uses etc and its free!!! - and this is just on a phone... id of been utterly wowed! - my wife has just got me a pandoras box for xmas to help heal the loss of those sega machines that got me through so much.... watching your channel and passion for sega really reminds me of my young self getting into fights in the playground over playstation vs saturn lol... anyways... just thought id tap you up. Best wishes.
