Why more travellers don't understand that the locals are the key to unlocking a place, not a lonely planet book is beyond me... other travellers are cool, but when most activities are based around drinking, it doesn't feel like an adventure until you venture out by yourself. It's an amazing video thanks

Still come here to watch this whenever I feel like I’m stuck in a routine life and this doco put me at ease to just grab my backpack and go somewhere or anywhere in the world. I will never forget about our mate Nate and the time he was with us. He helped me and boosted my confidence to ride on my new purchased motorbike ( back then). What an adventure it was! He was such a good and caring human being. My last memory of him was us sitting on those little chairs in a road side restaurant drinking Bia Hoi in Sapa. He was so happy and full of life. I asked him if he would like to join us for our next adventure but we spilt ways as he had plans to go to Thailand and us going to Nepal/India. Backpacking was the best time of my life and I'm glad I did it when I could. It was always nice to cross path with you Toine and we will meet again. Same same but different part 2 😎

I'm 50 and I backpack travelled when I was 30. This 6 month trip still brings back so many memories. I have never had any regrets of my backpack travels. It has changed my life forever. Ever since, I travel on and off to Thailand for my business and I met my lovely wife in Thailand. I cannot let the south-east asian life behind and hope to retire as soon as I can in Thailand. There is nothing more inspiring but travelling on your own and explore the world, not knowing where you will go, what you will see, what will happen and where you will sleep. The adventure brings you closer to local people, to life and to yourself. It brings you closer to the asian cultures, the food, the athmosphere and real life.

I had the most incredible adventure myself backpacking through Colombia and Ecuador for 4 1/2 months, getting to know the language, places and people I couldn't have dreamt of. It totally changed my perspective on the world. Sadly though for the last few years the pandemic made me feel just so numb and disconnected from the world that I kinda don't know any more where life's going for me. Your film reminded me of the vastness of the earth and its different people. So thank you for sprinkling some colour into these gray days!

This film is very is heartwarming to me because you have captured the experiences you can have while backpacking so well. With a smile I recall seeing these same places, thinking the same thoughts and meeting the same kind of souls. It really is Same Same but Different on many levels. I lost a childhood friend last year to brain cancer, we grew apart as adults and the news was very sudden. I chose to travel extensively around the world. He created a business and had a family so we ended up having a very different life. I am no more wiser about about life's decisions but I'd like to share a thought repeatedly crosses my mind whenever I travel. There is nothing more beautiful than simply seeing someone doing their thing. It can be the people you meet on the road or watching the locals living their lives. Without people and interactions every place would actually be the same. When you travel you never know what beautiful surprises will encounter, you just have to go. Thanks for making this video, sharing and inspiring people with this experience.

Hey cool work.. i think you cover the backpack perspective very well. I left NZ at 22 as felt a bit lost/disconnected from a bigger world. as a kid i use to hide in adventure books when things at home were a bit sh1t (which was often). In 1990 I moved to UK and shortly after hit the road for what turned out to be 2.5 years - so many amazing special adventures. I feel so lucky that i did this pre internet. I then slid back into career mode but was super lucky i got to travel a lot with work so the adventure never really stopped. I retired at 42 and spend typically 4-5 months / year travelling. I am now 53 and i still backpack. I either cycle or motorcycle or public transport. I either camp / hostel or sometimes just sleep a little rough. I only ever really street food it and i always take 3rd class transport. I typically travel solo but am never lonely. These days I have more than enough money to stay in nice hotels / restaurants etc but i never do - i simply find no joy or adventure in that.. I never returned to NZ to live (nor ever will). Asia is my home for past 22 years as that is where i feel most connected to . On the road is also where i feel at home (but not so much in so called developed countries). these days it takes a lot more to wow me 'tourist site wise" but my biggest buzz has always been wildlife experiences or simply sitting on the sidewalk chatting with the locals and acting up simply to make the kids and parents and grandparents laugh with (or at) me. . My travel experiences contribute to keeping me very humble and i appreciate my nice simple and super adventurous contented life. So thanks a lot for promoting such a positive perspective to life on the road...

Jeez, that ending fucked me up... It's really, really dark that Nate died in a motorcycle accident considering he emailed his dad about wanting to sell his bike because he didn't really know how to use it, and the dad encouraging him not to. Very tragic, I hope he doesn't blame himself since he clearly meant well but he is probably dealing with a lot of guilt... I don't know the exact circumstances of the accident and who was at fault, but either way his death should serve as a reminder to not push yourself when it comes to certain activities, like driving a motorcycle, especially in South East Asia where the roads are a free-for-all and bikers die in freak accidents on the daily. He seemed like a great guy and your doc is a great way of honoring his memory, RIP.

Wow, that was an amazing video. To be honest, this was kind of a sad documentary and it made me realize travelling might not be for me. It is all temporary, running away from the real life and responsibilities. Pretty much all of those interviewed travellers seemed to have a sad, kind of "being lost" vibe. Maybe I should be more sad in my normal life to have the need to reach out and look for something different. I've tried travelling alone once in SEA and it wasn't easy to make friends, even in Thailand when it was low season. I didn't like it, but later travelling with my real, actual friend was a great experience to share and seek for adventures. People you meet while travelling are not even considered friends imo, they are just fellow travellers who you will forget almost as soon as you met them.

I agree with your point of view, however I look at this differently, rather than being a 'sad' person 'escaping responsibilities and reality' I see it as person who is in search of himself, it's the everyday life and the mundaneness of all that goes with it.

i am backpacking right now and this evening i was sitting in my yurt, outside thunderstorms and rain so that the yurt got wet everywhere. it was on top of a day, where i wasn't feeling too good, kind of this unsureness that you have sometimes while backpacking alone as a young woman. then I reminded myself of some nice words of a friend I met during traveling.. I searched for a documentary or something about backpacking and I could relate to many things you said :) in the end though this film made my evening and gave me back my spirit so thanks for that!:)

Wow! This is just truly beautiful!! Watching this made me miss travelling so much! It’s true what you say in this film, that backpacking changes your perspective of life, makes you independent and also makes you make the best out of the worst and see it as a great story. Travelling really opens our minds. The worst part of travelling Are all the great friends you have to say goodbye to…, but They will always be a part of us❤️ thanks for sharing! Sincerely a soon to be a backpacker again❤️❤️❤️

What a great experience, and a beautiful story. I am also dutch and during college I've had the opportunity to stay in both the US and China for a year, it enriched my mind so much that I cannot get away from that feeling. Currently I work in a corporate environment as a salesmanager but recently everything in me is itching to pack my bags and leave. Aside from working 40 hours, I became a freelancer in my spare time and have my sources of income set up from doing this. I'll leave early next year. The value of living abroad, experiencing amazing things, is worth more than anything I own where I live currently. There is no time like the present.

What an amazing and beautiful documentary ❤ This video prepared me for my backpacking trip in a totally different way than other KZbin videoes - it has soul, raw emotions, truth, struggles and a greater understanding of cultures and lives. This documentary belongs on TV! I am sorry about your friend❤ at least he died living a life meant for him as it seemed like he did not want to go back home. Thank you for sharing your adventure with us.
