Okay...I may be slow here, but when she was talking about leaving a candle in a window to guide spirits and leaving offerings to spirits wandering through...it made me realize that the whole candy and people visiting others houses is a representation of that. The people are the guided spirits...and the candy is the offering. Mind officially blown...

Actually if you have a crossroads near leave food and drink there (it can be anywhere where that is at least a three-way intersection) It honors the Goddess Hecate who rules over the cross-roads and guides the spirits to cross over. It is a offering to them. If you want to leave a offering to Hecate as well you can leave a quarter at the cross-roads as well. Before you do it is recommended you sleep with it under your pillow and meditate with it then leave it there. Hope this helps out a little. Bright Blessings ~Brother Absalom

Hecate and her Priests and Priestesses guide those spirits to the veil and Hecate collects those souls the candle is a way for to light the way for them so they can find the cross-roads where Hecate will be waiting for them.,

@@saber2802 witch can be a unisex word, anyone of any gender can be a witch. Some male witches do prefer to be called a wizard and a few even prefer the title of warlock. However, many male witches and men from other magical practices do not like the term warlock. Warlock literally means oath breaker and some practitioners, myself included, view oath breaking as the worst of the worst. Granted it comes from a time when practicing magic was seen as breaking your oath to the Christian god but it is still a word many view with disdain so be very careful throwing the title of warlock around. Some people don't take to kindly to it

My mom and I always used to make sugar cookies together and decorate them with symbols of Samhain. Now that I'm an adult, I'm starting to do that with my son. He still gets a bit fixated on the idea of death rather than rebirth, but it's a fun, low key, and delicious activity.

It's important to remind him that it's really both, a celebration of our ancestors that have passed on and the end of Summer and beginning of a new year for us and in a way as you stated rebirth. I believe personally that Samhain is the day of the year when those souls that have passed from the previous year leave the summer lands and return back to earth being reborn. I'm Scots-Irish heritage, and my wife Icelandic, Swedish. Neither of us were Christian. Druidism resonates strongly with me. My wife died New Year's Eve, 2019 and for me that has now become a day unworthy of celebration, not that it ever was to me. I will no longer watch the Ball nor celebrate the passing of the year because on that day I have nothing to celebrate. My Karin's favorite holiday was Halloween, so Samhain will now be the start of my New Year. Thank you for this.

Ever since I was little my grandma always made it a tradition to go visit the cemetery every holiday. We would take the time to clean the headstones and always changed the flowers. I think it would be a nice way also to celebrate Samhain because I've always felt closer to my loved ones that passed away after doing that.

I love how you spoke about ancestry alters!! In my culture we celebrate Día de los Muertos! (Day of the Dead) where we make very similar almost exact alters!! With photos of dead loved ones, candles, flowers, things that they liked, and sugar skulls!! The day of the day is celebrated on November 1 though the 2nd! When the veil between worlds is the thinnest! And spirit can cross over!! I think it’s extremely interesting that cultures from other sides of the world had similar beliefs!

I won't lie, part of the reason I'm here is to hear how "Samhain" was pronounced. I learned it was pronounced like "Som-haine" (from Familiar Faces: Samhain by Chad Rocco/CR), which was how I pronounced it for years. But just recently, my Irish friend told me it was actually pronounced as "Sow-in".

And as sow has two different ways it can look (sew or s + ow as in ouch) I'll add sah-wen as that is very close and removes the long ō or any exaggerated ow/ouch. The ow is so soft and the ah more prevalent, by phonetics on the US side of the water. Remember when reading sow-in that people type it by hearing it in their own accents.

Miss Hearth, you have, once again, provided a rather interesting video. Lots of useful tips. This time of the year is important. The Ancestors, and spirits in general, tend to be more active. Though, for me, Desis (Samhain) is the end of the year. I tend to follow Norse/Anglo-Saxon/Scandinavian beliefs, and those generally put the Winternights (Yule) as the start of the New Year. I also agree in how all of this video can be used for those who aren't open about their Path. Granted, some of the tips you have to get a bit creative with, but it works nonetheless. I think a lot of people probably have fun thinking up reasons on having a skull in the house, especially in families that are far from openminded.

Do you have some book recommendations as "must reads"? I am currently expanding my collection of books on the norse, I have yet to get some books on the celts. I'm german and connect a lot more with the more "ancient" traditions and cultures than wicca, which feels extremely new age to me and I also have a hard time following something that is a concept sprung by only one to a handful of people, as people are flawed. It feels almost like christianity, following the teachings of only a few people and taking their words as law. No offense to any wiccans, absolutely not, these are just my reasons for choosing not to be wiccan. I respect every religion even if I don't agree with it. And I may be alone with my opinion and that's fine too. Everyone's mind works differently. Edited to add, I didn't mean to say "just as bad as christianity", if that is what people will read between the lines, I didn't say "bad". I just see those parallels and they don't agree with me personally. I also respect christianity, I was raised roman catholic after all, I don't identify with it, but I respect it. Especially when I do have to go to church for a family member's sake. Sometimes I think I have more respect for it than most self declared christians do. 😐

In modern irish the word for November is samhain. The word for may is Bealtaine. [Bel-te-na] is how its pronounced 😁 And Lúnasa (Lughnasadh) is August. [Lugh-nah-sah] And Iúil(yule) is July

Great video and it’s awesome you cater to ppl that are in or out of the broom closet. Personally, I’ve been out of the broom closet for over 10 yrs so I enjoy making a huge dinner for Samhain that include all types of seasonal foods. It’s a fun way for my family to enjoy the sabbath without having the same beliefs as myself and we also have a bonfire, where I finish up and do some divining privately as they get ready for bed. Another thing is that an apple can be cut horizontally instead of into wedges. That reveals a star shape in the center with 5 points for the 4 elements plus Spirit. It has oval points like petals and could be said to resemble a flower. The 5 point star is within a protective circle, if the apple is quite round. Eating that apple is symbolic as is revealing/freeing, seeing, that star. That way the whole apple - besides stem and seeds, is edible, too. There is no hard core. It removes the hardcore aspect of life in symbolism, softening the flow & "paving the way" so to speak.

Ava that's not weird at all. It's beautiful. A drawing is a picture, isn't it? A person can "picture" the loved one/s even. There aren't rigid exact ways and there is more than one tradition. There ARE groups that follow a specific formula. There are far more eclectics tho, and listening to your intuition for how to observe a ritual, how exactly you do a thing is ok. You'll find that said far more than any pagan telling you you must do it their way. Question rigid rules. This is spiritual practice. By far most pagans understand that to honor your grandma what you've said is so right! It fits and honors her and what she values, and honors nature. That is the root of the way! Trust your instincts. You can learn some from others but you don't need permission to be yourself. You were created as you are for a reason. Honor that too!

I like the story of lighting a candle to guide lost souls. Perhaps I shall light one for myself too. As someone who has considered themselves wiccan/pagan for 20 years I have felt pretty lost over the last few years. Very much going through the motions. It is only recently I have stumbled upon a new path and a different style of witchcraft entirely that seems to make more sense where I am at now. Perhaps I will start the new year with a re dedication and celebrate a new start on a new path. I guess I get to be a baby witch again. :)

That is what it is based on :) all of the Wiccan/neo-Pagan religions that use the Sabbats are celebrating the believed pre-Abrahimic celebrations of their ancestors. They may not be completely accurate, but with limited historical records they're our way of connecting to the past and their beliefs and celebrations.

@@HearthWitch Yes your statement is so very accurate. The Abrahamic religions took the holidays changed the rituals a little and I believe (This is my personal opinion only but others I have talked to agree) used that in an attempt to sway Pagans away from their roots to convert to their religion.

I was baptised and raised Roman Catholic in germany, my grandma is very religious, I decided not to go to church anymore when I was a teen, other than of course for relatives, say cousin's communions, or for the death of a relative, out of pure respect. I do respect it when I do go, I try hard to respect everything, even when I don't agree with it fully. But the odd thing is a lot of things my grandmother says or does have nothing to do with christianity and more to do with witchcraft. I wonder if she is at all aware of it. My mom is more religious than I am but she also doesn't go to church. She has taken quite an interest in what I have been doing and learning recently, starting on my path. I love that about my mom, she has never been judgmental of anything I've done, no matter how bad (and trust me there's some really fucked up stuff I did and actually told her about because I tell her everything, I don't lie to her ever, because I am highly opposed to lying and also, there's no need). We live together and we are more like friends/roommates, than mother and daughter. It's always been that way. I also didn't baptise my son, I leave everything open to him to choose when he is old enough and has formed his own opinions. Whatever he does I'll accept and respect but I won't take it upon myself to "put a shoe on him" if you will. He can choose without any prior doings of mine. My only hope is that whatever he does, he does it with knowledge because he has the desire to learn. But yeah, it is really sad how much the christians have tricked people over the years (not to mention all the other unspeakable things they have done...). In my hometown in germany, which just turned 1000 years old a couple of years back, they also burned witches. It's very very sad. There are a lot of very old places in my town that have a darkness about them. Which is another reason I can't stand for Christianity, they have just done too many horrible things, and that coupled with the hypocrisy of most of the people practicing and preaching it is just a hard pass for me. I'll still to some degree respect it like I said, but I just can't accept it for myself.

@@swampwitch6133 The church themselves admit they altered holidays & sabbats, incorporated pagan traditions by altering the supposed meaning of them, in order to lure people into conversion. They admit it most in things like bringing in evergreens, and monks, scribes, documented seámrogs being used to illustrate the Trinity. Those things all have far more ancient and current meaning. They moved their own feast days to when pagan traditions were celebrated in order to erase the original meanings. Didn't work on everyone. People are waking, more and more.

I really enjoy and appreciate your videos. At the risk of sounding ignorant, I'd like to get some opinions on a childhood recollection of mine. My great grandparents on my mom's side were from County Donegal in Ireland. I remember as a child that they were absolutely terrified when Samhain/Halloween rolled around. To them it wasn't a celebration of anything nor was it a holy occasion or anything like that. To them it was a night to be afraid of. They were aghast at the thought of my parents allowing my brother and I to go trick or treating and what not. In their heart of hearts they were absolutely convinced that something otherworldly was going to snatch us up in the night. As far as they were concerned we needed to be home behind locked doors before the sun went down. My parents weren't going to forbid our festivities so we would get a crack of dawn phone call from my great grandmother the next morning simply checking to make sure that everyone survived the night. Do you or anyone else have any thoughts as to why it was such a nightmare scenario for them? Thanks so much.

One possibility is that they had an experience with spirits that they did not understand and they had no frame of reference to cope with it. Perhaps they were naturally psychic enough to connect to spirits, but didn’t know what to do about it. Another possibility is that their religion prohibited any form of witchcraft. It is interesting that the most religiously dogmatic people seem to have the strongest belief in the devil and such.

In US phonetics it's closest to sah-wen. ("Sow" can look like either sew or ouch, typed. The "ow" is soooo soft as to be more ah.) In Irish mh is w although it can have a touch of v depending on the vowels near it. In other countries it has their accent, of course so some do say soween or sah-ven. I'm so tired r n, I should know but can't think which is Scottish, Manx or Welsh though Wales has its own additional celebration then too. It's online tho. If I go now on my phone to get it, I'll lose this thread. But it's there.

But for Samhain, mh is all w *in Irish. And I do see sow-in or sow-en most often but on this side of the pond people read those spellings so differently than the sound, I've found that sah-wen really helps for then when people hear it said they recognize it and pick up the so slight ow in the ah - if I'm making sense here. US ppl often forget the accent the people typing sow speak with! 😁 They read it in their own familiar, and varying accents! In the South "sow" really throws people off. (The North may be more likely to hear Irish accents in person?)

Yes that's completely fine, some people connect more with Samhain being new year, for others it's Yule, you do what feels right for you xx

If You live on the southern hemisphere You should "turn" the Wheel of the Year accordingly. So in October You celebrate Beltane, in December there will be Litha, Lammas in February, Mabon in March, Samhain on April 30th, Yule is in June, Imbolc in August and finally You have Ostara in September. It's less about the date and more about how really the Wheel of the Year is turning there where You live. For wee little monsters who want to join in on the festivities, have them help cook food and devise party games for them to play. Tell them ghost stories and tales of their family members past during story time circles, and help them carve pumpkins or turnips as jack o' lanterns. You can also have them roast pumpkin seeds, go guiseing ( trick or treating), or bake sugar cookie versions of sweet skulls. The sky's the limit for entertaining little goblins.

Crafts in general are always a good idea too, when making a wreath they can help as well. We always talk about ancestors throughout the entire year though so that wouldn't really be a different thing for us. I talk so much about my grandpa that sadly passed suddenly in 2010, that my 3 yr old not only calls him his grandpa too (he is also named after him), but he talks about him as if he has spent time with him, saying things like "me and my grandpa sam used to do this, and he liked this very much" "grandpa sam used to do this.../like this...". I don't correct him. His take on it is also that grandpa sam is "far away", but really, he's right here. Always has been, always will be. I'm so glad my son has a relationship with him, even though they never really met. But I know in a way my grandpa has contributed to this, sometimes I wonder if maybe he has whispered things in my son's ear and that's why he tells it with so much conviction when he says my granpa likes this/liked to do that. 💜

Oh, thank you so much 💖 Personally, I think it depends on which you are most connected to, I started with runes and to this day find them easiest, I know of others that are drawn to Tarot and really struggle with runes. I would say start with the one you feel most drawn to as it's the one you're likely going to find the easiest.
