Never thought I would hear the 'Judith' tone nailed like that.

Great tone!!! , but it seems the amp is not as gainy as I thought it would be, the gain pot looks to be 3/4s of way in the demo and it doesn't sound very saturated at all, more like a crunch channel type of gain

My favorite Friedman for sure. Does this head he's playing through have one of the Friedman specific mods done to it or is it the stock Naked?

Does anyone know what happened to this amp? Is it out of production or on a custom order, one-off, basis? I don't see it anywhere on the website. Did he use this design, incorporate it into another amp, and give it another name? Or does anyone know which current Friedman model and achieve these tones?

Discontinued. Dave Friedman made the original--call it the mk. 1 I guess--amp for Billy Howerdel now almost 20 years ago and went on to soon after make an extremely limited run of 10 of them, most of which were sold overseas. Years go by, APC is more or less dead in the water, but 2010 comes around and they announce a reunion tour. People go see the shows and remember how godly of a tone BH has, and Friedman then makes the mk. 2 version from 2010-2011 (this is the one that looked like a plexi clone) but he wasn't able to get all of the same parts that were used in the original design for Howerdel. As such, it was a close replica but not quite perfect. In 2012 after getting his hands on only 25 sets of the original spec transformers, he went on to make the very limited run of the mk. 3 version (which is the one in this video). The mk. 3 was the last version made--in large part due to running through the supply of original parts, but probably also due to BH and APC popping back out of the spotlight and people's attention wandering elsewhere. In Rob Navarette's (Tone Merchants/Rack Systems Ltd.) own words in my correspondence with him during that time: "Everyone wanted the Howerdel sound, so we found 25 sets of the original spec transformers and are using those until we run out. The amp sounds exactly like billy's original now. I have the new Naked number one and billy borrowed mine and liked mine better than his original." Friedman at some point said if there was a reemerging demand for the amp, he might someday make a few more, but unfortunately for APC fans there are objectively more relevant and creatively active artists and these these days so who knows if the day will come when he makes another run. Billy Howerdel is my favorite guitar player, APC is my favorite band. I spent YEARS researching his tone and the Naked amp/what it is and what makes it tick. I own serial #10 of the mk. 3 Naked amps. it's an awesome amp and honestly the history behind it is a bit of an odyssey and fun to chat about. The closest in tone Friedman makes now is the BE-100, but honestly it's still a pretty different beast (still really awesome though). I think I might be able to give you some info on how to go about getting pretty close if you want to hit me up!

Wow, what a story. Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate all the info. I'm also a big fan of Billy Howerdel, ever since I bought Mer de Noms, and saw the original lineup live on their first tour playing the small venues. I was blown away by that sound and trying to recreate/approximate it. That's awesome that you were able to get that amp, even more so that Billy liked it better than his. My first tube amp was a Mesa/Boogie Mark IV, and that was because my guitar teacher had one and before I knew what I wanted out of an amp (and before I heard APC). I'll never get rid of that amp (my father helped me buy it and he has passed away), so I always new that I wanted some kind of "modded" (for lack of a better word) amp, like a Friedman, Diesel, or Voodoo. When I was 18/19, I always used to save magazine clippings/photos of APC and Billy's gear. I still have a picture of him in a studio (not sure if it was his) and there's a wall of Plexis (I'm assuming modded) and a Voodoo amp, so I started looking into Voodoo amps. But this amp is the holy grail ...for me at least. It's good to know that the BE-100 is the closest so I don't go for anything else in the line and get disappointed. I have an Axe-FX II, so that is the closest I can get to the Friedman sound for now. It's also cool to know that Billy uses Fractal as well. For years, I was trying to get a Lexicon MPX G2 and I even had an Eventide Eclipse for a while, but without that switching system those wouldn't have gotten me anywhere. I was REALLY disappointed in the Eclipses' loading time when switching presets as well, so my Axe-FX is one of my most coveted pieces of gear now. Yeah, I'd love any info you could share. I greatly appreciate your time.

@@mythicislepro Dude did you ever get your hands on that fractal? I remember reading your posts, you said if you ever did, you would then profile your amp. Also I remember someone wanting to profile it for you. It would be a treat if you did.
@mythicislepro5 жыл бұрын
@@benjaminlinus2792 Naw, I just ended up going the VST route. Something I found in my experimenting with the AXE FX when I was thinking about purchasing is that I spent way too much time deep diving into menus and tweaking and less time playing. I'm now running a combination of HELIX Native, BIAS, and Toneforge plugs instead because they're more affordable and I'm not like a touring musician, nor am I currently in a band of any kind, nor can I seem to shake an insanely long writing slump, so I can't justify purchasing more gear. I don't remember if anyone explicitly contacted me on the forum to ask about profiling, but I'm not super comfortable just shipping it off to someone I don't know and trusting that I'll get it back. Really I would have to find someone in the Seattle of Portland area that I could meet somewhere to have it done. If such an interested individual lived in those areas though and happened to be reading this...
