Sam. Regarding the cars on the low shipping vessels it's because the entire family lives on the boat during a big part of the year. Children have their school and education onboard with their parents as teachers. When needed they lift of the car/cars with the aft crane. Sixhaven is a nice harbour. Nice and quite, but still just a 5 min ferry trip to middle of the city center of Amsterdam.

Modern day vhf radios are generally efficient either had held or fixed in the nav position. It’s especially capable if you make a co-ax extension link from hand held into the mast head antenna. I sail and would not venture from bank or shore without my radios. Phil, radio ham.🇬🇧

Fun to see you arrive in Amsterdam by small boat... I had a great time there arriving by plane and train! Really enjoyed a few other places to - Eindhoven, Rotterdam, The Hague... Great country - nice, low key people, and everything seemed to work very well, which seems remarkable considering the natural challenges of it's location and geography. I want to go back!

Hey Sam! Thanks for all your videos! I just got myself a 1969 Gulf Coast 20 yesterday and soon I’m gonna be cruising the Gulf! I’ve been watching your videos since 2021 and I’ve been slowly working my way up to a bigger boat. Started with a kayak I sailed in Florida, then a Super Snark modified to fit windsurfing sails for a month out here in Texas, and now my 20 ft fractional sloop with a swing keel and a 9” draft! I’m ecstatic! Thanks for giving me the sailing bug!

I think people that do not go to sea do not appreciate that the seas are being littered by these things. They go horizon to horizon blocking access, changing air streams and you might be suprised to find that when they reach end of life they are left where they are forever because it costs too much to remove them. Bet you wouldn't want one or two in your street. There are many forms of pollution, invisible, but also the kind you can't unsee.

Cheers Sam, loved it. IMHO VHF can be very useful between vessels when out of range of cell towers, and I always think it will be handy in my liferaft or lifejacket to speak to the guy flying the whirlygig in the sky or the captain of the enormous ship to windward, in the unlikely event an occasion occurs. Just saying :-)

We got buzzed by a big grey aircraft when about 18 miles off shore. We heard nothing. Then we got buzzed again. This time our radio almost blew out the wall, telling us it was Border Security and that we must identify ourselves. How it went full volume is a mystery only kown to Border Security. They then in no uncertain terms told us it was an offence to not respond.

I agree with skaraborgcraft by the way. A marine VHF is a crucial survival tool at sea, for both your vessel and others. You also need to be able to communicate with shipping around you to report navigational hazards to prevent accidents at sea fom flotsam and jetsom such as shipping containers or derelict vessels etc not to mention piracy and other marine crimes.

Hi Sam. I'm surprised you did't get more stick for the 'just use your mobile' comment! I'd never cross the channel without DSC VHF, it also identifies who and what you are when in the TSS and you have to call another vessel but you know that. Have a quiet winter.

@@samholmessailing We have, that's why we weren't run down by a bulker and I'm alive enough to watch youtube videos. Also, your boat will be held in New Zealand until you fit one. Mobile services cut out 25 miles offshore, but a ship can pass on messages and alert coastguards. You may also save someone elses life if you are close and hear an SOS on ch16. Otherwise, don't have one and let them drown. Finally you use an AIS alarm which requires a vhf transmission and receiver. I know Josh Slocum never had no radio or life jacket either. Where ever did he get to?

I agree, but he did say "if you're just getting started, just use your cell phone...". I think he meant for beginners a vhf is not neccesary equipment, as long as you have a cell phone. I doubt that a cell phone would work on an ocean crossing, though!
