Sam, I’m a very busy dad of 3. I’m 49 and my dreams of learning to sail don’t exactly excite my wife (lol) but it’s just great to live vicariously through your adventures. So exciting to listen to everything on noise canceling headphones. Great job and I’m looking forward to some merch. Who on earth could give a thumbs down to these videos! This guy is living the Dream in every sense of the expression! If you ever make it to Seattle, I’ll stop by to say hi! 🍻

Do your dreams excite you? Make time for yourself, man. Nobody else will. In the end, the only things you'll regret are the things you wanted to do in life but didn't even attempt.

Thomas, I'm in the same "boat". Father (39) of two (6 yr old girl, 9 yr old boy) and the wife has a fear of the ocean. I want to retire and sail the world, but she is supportive once the kids are out of the best and we have finances in order. I hope you can live your dream, even if it's later than you wanted.

@Fred Flintstone that's good advice! Sam also prefers dealing with smaller vessels overall. The bigger the boat, the less likely you'll have time to sail it because you're always fixing stuff. Unfortunately, we didnt have a sailboat when Sam was a kid but we did send him to sailing day camp for a couple summers. We had kayaks which is another easy, inexpensive way get your kids on the water.

Those SpaceX boats are Go Ms Chief and Go Ms Tree. Meant for catching the nose fairings (payload coverings) of their Falcon 9 rockets as they parachute down from a launch. There are two fairings on their rockets so they sent two boats; One for each fairing. The fairings are worth a couple million each so it's definitely worth trying to catch and reuse them. Mr. Steven was the original fairing catcher out of Los Angeles until the original company went bankrupt so SpaceX bought them out and moved them to the East coast where more launches occur.

Sam, Good way to fix leaks through small cracks is to mix up some silastic RTV with mineral turpentine. Takes a few minutes of persistent stirring to get it to dissolve but it will eventually. Start with a 50/50 mix and aim for an easy pourability. Pour around the joint or fill a disposable syringe to squirt up hill. The silicon solution will permeate the joint and over a few hours the turps will evaporate leaving a thin flexible cured film. Stay safe!

We learned from having an on-board for over a decade... don't have an inboard. We sold that sailboat and bought one that was 2' shorter with an OUTBOARD motor on the back. It's much easier to work on and honestly everything else, too! We were always fighting the inboard... always fixing something, replacing this, doing that. It got annoying. No more! The outboard is such a better option, and you get more room on the boat! Win win!

Since I'm limited on space onboard my wife's sailboat ......i still need to carry a second starter, alternator, compact quiet generator & spare belts while cruising . I also lubricate the alternator with WD40 . I'm also using wheel chair battery's which are more compact & meant to be drained quite low then charge back up......& its a significant price difference instead of the deep cell expensive battery's, oops TMI . A PITA but necessary . Great videos 👍

For the fridge wiring, it's good to change the wiring anyways because the factory wire is most likely pure copper, no tinning. Need to run boat wire and always always heat shrink where possible to avoid intermittent electrical ghost problems from the copper wire oxidizing.

So water is literally a miracle, it takes absurd amounts of energy to fuse hydrogen and oxygen yet here we are, a tiny blue speck in a vast expanse of extreme heat, cold and brain melting forces we vaguely comprehend. So in a way your little sailboat bobbing around the unknowable expanse of ocean isn’t dissimilar to the earth bobbing around the unknowable expanses of the cosmos. Really humbling in a way.

I had the leaking hatch beams on my Cape Dory 30 Ketch, very irritating for 8 years.. I took off the "Turtle" (hood with all the screws) covering the sliding hatch. The water comes from the two opening channels and seeps between the fiberglass and the beams, whether hatch is closed and with boards in won't help. Old silicone had separated. Tried putty, new silicone, didn't help. I finally let 5 minute epoxy to flow in the crack on sides of the beams. Been dry ever since. Since I had a mizzen mast stopped the sliding hatch for complete removal. I had to cut the forward and hidden part of the hatch (the beam is the stop) then re-glass the piece and make strong enough.
