My first and only re-fret job (so far) was on my 1967 Fender Telecaster. Nuts, right? I didn’t have any luthier tools either. I used a clothes iron, wood glue, and a couple different files. I am a carpenter so I wasn’t completely lost, plus I researched on KZbin. Believe it or not, everything came out great.

Gotta learn somehow. I know stew mac are giving tools which helps make the video possible but by no means do you NEED to spend lots on fancy tools to do a good job. Is it easier with them? Maybe? But if you never had those tools to begin with that's all a bit academic. For example, that fret bevelling file is £68 plus postage if you are in the UK(going with that based on accent in the video lol) same result by getting any vaguely well equipped carpenter or indeed your own tools to cut a 35 degree angle slot into a piece of scrap hardwood into which you can shove a cheap file from your local hardware/car boot sale/where ever you can aquire one. Simply cut the handle off the file with a hacksaw to achieve basically the same darn tool for what? £10? Nothing in comparison. Does the same job. If you own a plane cut a straight slot on and plane the surface to get your 35 degees you don't even need a table saw with a blade you can angle. It's this simple to save a ton of money and get into repair and building yourself. Grab a guitar or some wood and hardware and get experimenting. You can only learn by doing.

Having quality tools for each step of this process is incredibly helpful, if you make sure you research each step until you’re confident and just take your time, it’s a lot like playing really, if you’re thinking you’re going to make mistakes then you will, if you have no confidence in your ability and don’t maintain your own guitars then better to leave it to someone who has experience. These tools are expensive and completely necessary, but if it’s something you’re comfortable doing, you’ll definitely end up with a lot of friends who appreciate your skills and the more you do the faster you get

Over-radiusing SS frets can be a problem - it is much harder than traditional nickel silver frets. It depends on how well the tangs grip the fret slots, and how well the glue holds them. Sometimes you see SS frets that have sprung back, which will result in a hump / tall spot on the middle of the fret. Some luthiers will say that one can slightly overradius them, others will swear to exact radius (of the fretboard). Also - you can add fallaway to the last 5 frets or so. Basically the area over the neck-joint that won't bend when the guitar neck is strung up. You just level that area a bit more, gives you lower action.
@Samjamguitar
@Samjamguitar 11 күн бұрын
I only slightly over radiused the frets! This seemed to work this time but it's certainly useful to know about next time I refret with stainless steel! I will add a touch of fallaway to the next job👍

I just did a refret as a practice run with an old guitar. As for the solder. You can just heat the frets with the soldering iron. The Solder is not needed, you just need to heat them up. Good Job!
@Samjamguitar
@Samjamguitar 16 күн бұрын
Thanks! The solder would help on more glued-in stubborn frets as it helps with heat transfer and retains the heat for longer! But I agree that it may not be necessary for more typical frets that are not glued in! Thanks for watching!

@@Samjamguitar I did it on a old late 60's Tiesco. The flatter tip works great. You will see the fret board bubble a bit. Just keep running the tip back and forth. @tjb9930
@tjb9930 15 күн бұрын
@@Samjamguitar It would do the opposite of retaining heat longer and help with heat transfer to the fret would be minimal. if anything, you're adding a material that cools quickly, meaning it transfers heat quickly. that's why solder hardens so fast when soldering. if it retained much heat, it would stay molten much longer. you're basically adding material that will more quickly transfer the heat from the fret to the air. As for helping with heat transfer, it's not necessary if you apply heat properly. again, because it transfers heat and cools so quickly, you're transferring less heat to the frets than you would be by just slowly sliding the soldering iron down the frets. the size of the frets compared to that little bit of solder is definitely not gaining any advantage from putting actual solder on there. It could possibly make it more difficult in multiple ways. that isnt even mentioning the risk of damaging the neck from solder dropping on it. obviously, you can do it how you want, and if youre happy doing it, I'm not anyone to say stop. It just doesnt provide the advantage you think it is.

Good job 👍 I agree that it's therapeutic.... I decided to buy from music nomad a workstation, gages , . I replaced the nut on my 🇺🇲 strat Mex telecaster and Squire affinity FMT telecaster to tusq nut, enhanced the sound. Also replaced the saddles to graphite string shaver saddles on my Mex telecaster. I did the intonation on my Mex telecaster and was getting some fret buzzing. So I decided to take it to a luither because I adjusted the truss rod and it could not go anymore . He loosen the truss rod and readjusted after working on some of the frets. He showed me a few things to do on my guitar.... with the saddles and the nut is a little high. He knew that I worked on my guitar. . I used flitz on my frets. I will do the work tomorrow.... Still new at it but.....

I refretted my red Telecaster, having done loads of fret work over the years on various guitars, but never a full refret. Stewmac didn't send me any free tools, unfortunately. It went ok, but the one step I should have done better is pressing the frets in firmly, so an arbor press looks like a good idea. What's the yellow tape? Very in depth review. Stew Mac tools are the best. Will save a bunch of money by just buying the right tool first. This is something I’d probably do myself one day, as I enjoy working on guitars as much as playing them. It would be a decent sized investment though, and you have to refret several necks to make it worthwhile. Luckily, I have many guitars, so it’s going to take me awhile before they’re worn to replacement. Interesting on the last leather polish…never heard of that. I usually dremel polish once a year, and hand polish at every string change. Thanks for the vid, surely to be referenced if I need to do in the future.

@samjamguitar I would highly recommend undercutting the frets slightly as if doing a bound board, especially on maple as theres less risk of damage to the side of the fingerboard finish and fill the fret slots with titebond original. Stainless steel allegedly its better to match the radius exactly as the fret wire is a lot harder. If you do a spot level with a rocker to identify high frets you save a lot more overall fretwire, identify high frets tap them down again, re check and if the fret is still high, spot level those frets. Then you only just need to a very light pass on all the frets to ensure they are perfectly level. It means you will get more regrets and save time

Great video and well done for attempting the re fret. I am sure you know that Leo designed the Strat to have interchangeable parts, and his idea with the bolt on neck was so when the neck needed re fretted etc it was just as easy to change the neck. I guess its still way cheaper if you do the job yourself to re-fret the guitar, but I think i would just buy a new neck. Obviously changing the neck would mean you wouldnt have been able to make the video haha. as i well done for attempting it
@Samjamguitar

There are many benefits to refretting over swapping the neck out! I like the process of learning new skills, and this definitely was no exception! refretting means you can choose the exact style of fret wire (material and size) and also spend time making sure that everything plays perfectly, as there is no guarantee that a new neck won't need leveling/crowning, etc.. Also, if you really like the feel or look of a particular neck, then that doesn't have to change! In the long run, after the initial cost of tools, it will save you a lot of money and provide you with a sense of achievement and knowledge that can't be gained from swapping out parts!

@@Samjamguitar Zero frets got kind of bad wrap due to poor quality guitars in the 70's. But if installed and setup properly they're great and you can change string guages without hassle. I have a Burns guitar with one on and it's fantastic. Guitar nuts let manufacturers off the hook a bit when it comes to making sure the whole neck is level. They're deliberately a bit higher to help eliminate buzz out the door. Whereas a properly setup zero fretted instrument should all be level: a costly setup nightmare when manufacturing in mass. You will even see some modern zero fret guitars with the zero fret deliberately higher than the other frets to offset poor fret levelling at the factory and therefore negating the advantages you have with bringing the action super low.

I’m kind of at a loss at why you didn’t use the fret rocker to check for high frets before leveling all of them. A lot of times it’s unnecessary, as only a few frets will be high, and that’s usually because they haven’t been pressed into the fretboard as well as the others, a few hammer taps usually fixes that. It also saves you leveling and recrowning every fret, you just need to dress the fret ends

You DO NOT over radius stainless steel frets because they will eventually pop out of the slot a little. You can over radius nickle frets but not stainless. You dont level frets in a circular pattern like he is either aand you DO NOT want to use any more pressure than necessary
@Samjamguitar
@Samjamguitar 12 күн бұрын
Good to know about over radiusing ss frets! I only went ever so slightly over 9.5. I also didn't apply any pressure other than the weight of the leveling beam itself! I will take the advice about the circular motion👍

I can deal with most of the prices of Stewart Mac tools, ( some are WAY overpriced ) but the truly exorbitant shipping costs, especially if buying from overseas, makes me look to buy elsewhere

A StewMax subscription gives free shippers Internationally which helps if buying a bulk order or many items spread out through the year!
@martinweston7144

@@Samjamguitar By that logic, that means that the person that only places a casual order, who doesn't order items several times a year [And so can't see the benefit for paying the EXTRA $70pa for the yearly postal subscription], by being charged exorbitant postage, is actually subsidizing those that do order frequently. This is why people complain about the shipping costs.

I'm not knocking you or your fretjob. Nice work. If you are regretting a guitar and you go grinding on the new frets,with extremely rough sand paper,doesn't that defeat the purpose? You can drag new fret wire through calipers and they are very consistent. If your frets are uneven after you press them in, you.need to seat the rest of the frets to the depth of the lowest fret. They will seat deeper with another go through the press. Actually,tapping them is as consistent as a press. One high spot on one fret doesn't warrant grinding on 24 frets and taking the life out of a new fret. Just saying. If you drag a fret slot saw through the tang grove,it has to be consistent too. Or each fret will seat differently. There are fret slot saws with depth guards. You shouldn't have to grind on new frets.
@Samjamguitar
@Samjamguitar 5 күн бұрын
Not all frets will seat identically as is the nature of wood! If all the frets are seated well but you still have high spots, You could spend time spot levelling and chasing your tail but it's far quicker to to level and crown. If it was just a few frets then maybe, but any more than that I would just do a quick overall level.
