Voice teacher Sam Johnson and producer Hiram Hernandez have a conversation about some iconic scene musicians. I hope this observation on how Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance, Anthony Cappocchi of Dragged Under, Adam Lazzara of Taking Back Sunday, Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy, and Bert McCracken of The Used sing helps you figure out how the voice works better, so you can learn how to make smart choices in your own voice.

Gerard Way is an emotional storyteller. I think he gets out of his voice exactly what he is going for. If your voice matches your goal and it isn't damaging I think it is perfect for the part.

My favorite singer from this popular "emo bands" is Patrick Stump. I'm not a huge fan of punk-pop music, more like a casual listener, but I really believe he's an amazing singer... He stands out to me because his voice is powerful, his delivery is very passionate and somehow the contrast between his personality (he's such a nice guy, gentlemanly, kind, good sense of humor but maybe a bit too nice sometimes) versus how CONFIDENT, relaxed and versatile he seems on stage... It's sort of charming to me. I think he's amazing. I enjoy how he plays with his technique, it gives his delivery a lot of personality. I wish I could listen to him singing a wider variety of music... Something like neo soul or jazz funk would be interesting (something that mixes older with more modern sounds)... That joke about him having "a soul voice" is actually the perfect way to describe why he's such a great singer. I believe Patrick is a member of some Musical Academy now?? He would be such a great teacher.

@planet 4 As I said, I think his voice is soulful in the sense it is able to express a lot of emotion... In terms of vocal technique, I think he stands out between many of his contemporaries, very skilled, versatile and stable/consistent... But I lack the technical knowledge to explain it.

Loba Étoile I gotta disagree. Patrick’s voice is awful to me and grates on my ears in a special sort of hellish way. Died when you said his vein was “burtsing” in his neck. There are so many other bands I’d wished you would have talk about! The Used was huge because of the emotion Bert had while performing. Bert McCracken was my hero for singing but I can’t sing like him and if I do try it hurts especially on a lot of the vocal fry. Not to mention he does have an insane vocal range you can definitely hear it in their first Album (self titled album) He’s also had vocal surgery. Too me he’s really underrated and he’s amazing and even if his vocals aren’t perfect live he puts on an amazing show. So thank you for recognizing him. Long story short. I heard him for the first time in 6th grade on Fuse TV. The Taste of Ink Music video was brand new. And when I heard 4 o’clock in fucking morning it blew me away and I kept my attention. I’ve been a huge fan ever since.

Dude, y'all have made me so happy with this. I love all of these bands and I LOVE hearing you talk about how they manage to do what they do. And can I say how warm I got hearing you're a little emo boy at heart?

For harmonizing, it is very difficult to start, but I would say the easiest way to learn is to: P.S. - Sam you're incredible. Start with your melody line and think about creating a Major Third harmony above the melody line (so you can sense how to harmonize). Once the pitch is accurate for each note, I would start adding Perfect 4ths and 5ths. Understanding Intervals and the connection between one melodic note and one harmonic note is key for harmonization. Hope this helps someone : )

I'm so excited you enjoy this kind of music! I've always been into this genre and harder and a lot of people say it's just crap and noise. I love your videos. Have a merry christmas Sam!

For harmonies I love to try improvising runs and grab those notes for my harmonies because the notes match. It's easier for me to sing funky runs than funky harmonies.

This right here is my jam. Awesome video, you should do another including Jonny Craig from Emarosa and Craig Owens from Chiodos. I have a naturally deep clear voice and is so frustrating trying to sing the high distorted stuff that I love to hear

MCR is legit really good. Welcome to the Black Parade is one of my favorite albums of the genre, and the two before it are great too. Danger Days isn’t very good though.

I'd love to see you watch some acoustic 30 seconds to Mars. I think he's much more technically trained than most emo/rockbands. I hate the music they make now, but the older stuff is great haha 😄

I learned how to harmonize the same way I learned to sing the melody. I sang it. Listen to some music that already has harmonies in place, and then only sing the harmonies. You'll hear the melody while you sing the harmony, and you'll start the feel the relationship in both directions. A couple months/years of driver seat solos later and it'll be second nature. Tip#2 Find an album you can listen to on repeat for days. You already know exactly what the melody is going to do, now just add your own harmonies. Tip#3 a lot of music that has multiple verses will add harmonies the 2nd or 3rd time it repeats to keep things interesting. If you sing those same harmonies, but before they get added in, then you can feel what it's like to sing a harmony without just matching pitches. Hope it helps! Good luck anyone that read this!

Great breakdown about these bands. On a sidenote, the video for THE USED is post operative Bert where he doesn’t scream anymore. 2002 -2007 Bert was a monster
