Him(im just randomly saying this even though I know none of this correct and has nothing to do with the video ) :the g6 and the falsetto sounded breathy on the second note and the larynx didn't have enough room to change so they had to come back down on the b flat and then slide up from the chest voice and that allowed enough air flow through the a sharp. So in the end it worked out well. Me: Mhm 😂 😂.

While you can't sing, he is a professional vocal teacher commenting on professional vocalists and is providing a lot of insight that anyone learning vocals can use.

I'm rubbish at getting the right notes too, but I love singing along in the car on the way to work in the morning. It makes me happy. And that's what singing is about - making you feel something. Just because it doesn't sound good to others doesn't mean you shouldn't sing. Just maybe keep it to when you're alone!

Stevie Nicks agrees with you lol. She dodges EVERYTHING and has since about 1980. She's still got more range than she uses live, she'll pull it out in a controlled environment (i.e. the studio). But you can see why she dodges if you listen to her ending on Rhiannon from the Rosebud documentary (1976) vs her attempting it in 82 on the Mirage tour. The second time she hits the high notes but they have a strained quality.

@@JC-yy8iv I've always thought that professional singers tend to come in 2 categories. Some, like Christina or Whitney Houston, are vocalists. She sang a bunch of songs that are mediocre but the point isn't the music, it's her talent as a singer. The other category, like Stevie Nicks or Bob Dylan, are musicians. The point of Stevie isn't that she's this phenomenal singer. It's the emotion and style she puts in a song. The difference between the categories is essentially whether or not they'd sound good singing the national anthem.☺️

Yes. As a professional singer we often find ourselves having to make this choice on the fly. One Christmas Eve I had gotten horribly ill but was under contract to sing some church services, including O Holy Night. In the final service my voice was simply exhausted. As I was approaching the end of the piece I had the choice to attempt the optional high note on "divine" and risk sounding like a dying cat, or doing damage, or go for the safe bet and take the lower option that I had already sung multiple times during that piece. There was only one choice. Better for the listener and better for me.

He is a vocal coach not Adam Levine. Every singer especially the better ones have a vocal coach. You almost always have a degree in music and often have a masters degree to be a legitament coach. That or have some sevant level music theory and most important is ear training. Lots of people like this have perfect pitch hearing. Meaning they can turn there back to a piano and you can hit a key and they can turn around and hit the same key because of hearing the note played not by watching.

Yeah, if you are buying a ticket to a concert to you are paying for the " show " 95% of the time, not to have them get on stage and belt out their best renditions for 2-3 hours. Some artists have the technique and stamina to do that while on tour night after night, but it's not a common thing. And honestly, I wouldn't want that from most of the artists I follow, I want their best show performance. Like if you were to go see Pink live in concert, trust me you would want to see her dance and do her wire choreography more than if she sat on a stool and focused solely on her vocals. You'd rather have had Chester from Linkin Park to be animated charismatic while getting the crowd involved instead of just him standing under a spotlight focusing on pure vocals. When I go to a live event, I want it a little fast and loose like a party so that everyone can be unashamedly passionate and enjoy the atmosphere. I don't want it to feel like they're auditioning for the X-factor.

It's possible that some singers also feel like changing up a song after singing it so many times

They change it up because they can no longer do it the way they use too. Many singer try using the power of their voice, and it really destroys your voice. Jon Bon Jovi did it in 1986 when Slippery When Wet came out. He tried to hit all those high notes he recorded from the studio, and found it hard to do them live everytime. Afterwards he finally got a vocal coach to teach him how to actually sing. Ever since then Jon doesn't those notes anymore and allows Richie Sambora or David Bryan to sing them instead, because they are the back up singers and can hit the high parts easy.

CavemanJesus4Life they also change them up because it brings new interest in a show. Tom Jackson, who is an icon coach for a lot of the top acts in the world, talks about it in his book Live Music Method. This technique is common in live performances. It can also be used when a singer isn’t feeling up to par and may need to change the notes or even the entire key because they still want to put on a show even when they have a cold. There can be several reasons someone would change up their vocals in a song when they’re live. It’s not only because they can’t hit the note, but it can be. Sam even discusses this sometimes, he can tell a singer is testing their range by different things they do while singing - and if they don’t feel comfortable in one of those tests then they may change the way they approach their high note. We’re not perfect every day. Sometimes you can hit a note perfectly and two days later it’s not as comfortable, but then the next day it’s easy again. Singers are humans and humans are fallible. But anyway, my point is sometimes the change is actually pre-planned for aesthetic.

Here are a few off the top of my head: I'd Be There For You: "Didn't mean to miss the birthday baby, I wish I'd seen you blow those candles out......OUTTTTT!" Never Say Goodbye - one of the past Goodbyes. Not super high though. Raise Your Hands - the high scream at 3:29. But what are the others? I feel like only the first one I listed is a good example.

I watched singers Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova from t.A.T.u sing at their recent solo concerts, both of them sang their song from their early years "Nas Ne Dogonyat/ Not Gonna Get Us" and I noticed right away they both had key changes as well as tempo and pitch. I understand for Yulia Volkova as she has damaged her voice from surgery and endless screaming. However I was surprised by Lena Katina changing the tempo and key. I know their voices have changed and they no longer have the 15 year old voices of their youth but now have matured since their in their 30s.

@@101spacegirl G5 is definately not hard for a soprano you're correct there. I know from experience in singing this note as a soprano in my choir. But I have the highest vocal range there so yh. I can actually get to a D6 which is the highest note that anyone can sing in my choir. Yet we haven't sung this note in any pieces. And when there was once a C6 ina piece, I didn't get picked to do it bc my vocal coach doesn't know how high my vocal range actually is lol

Certain times when a song is changed during a live performance, it's either the singer is exhausted from the night prior, and now has strained vocals, or they performed the song so often that they want to change it up a bit, take runs out, add high-notes etc. It adds to the song imo. For Miley's change, I think she did it cause she knows she can't reliably get to those high notes and would rather maintain a great live performance, than to kill it with 1 note. As we all know, you can perform a song great but 1 hiccup and it can derail the entire rest of the song, and make it rather bad or not memorable. Definitely was a logical change to repeat 1 verse. And tbh sounds better(even though I hate her music, and don't really think she has a great singing voice but others do, and respectably she has hit great success for multiple years.) Leona appears to have fatigue, or due to her age, might not be able to reach those notes anymore at will, and is more or less a "can I do it?" type deal and when she feels she can, she does which means she has to ad-lib high notes that she used to do flawlessly. Like muscles, the voice can get strained, damaged and therefore lose the luster it once had. It's not a shock after many years of ripping out the notes she can't reliably do it. She's still fucking amazing. And so is Christina. Somehow Christina just maintains peak performance.(albeit she chooses when and when not to use lip syncing. It saves her voice and allows her to perform the rest of her set with a healthy voice vs a now damaged and exhausted voice. It's like weight lifting, if you start off heavy you burned out, you taxed your body right off the bat and the rest of your workouts suffer.)

Plus I enjoy learning new things. Most recently, an amazing video about how armor was made for knights and their horses has become MY woodcarving video. A lot of times, an articulate video maker such as this gentleman gets me interested enough to learn more about some random subject, like antelopes of the world, the aforementioned armory-making and other wierd subjects to do further research on the various subjects.

He probably says it's not hard for the following reason. When you learn how to bridge from chest to mixed/head voice, it is like going from 1st gear to 2nd. Surprisingly the hardest part is the transition between chest and mix/head, between gear changes. But once you are past the bridge, completely in 2nd gear, everything is soooooooo much easier, believe me. Demi can hit G5's in her sleep,... E5? she has to be awake.

I think my favorite thing about this video is how you have so much passion towards everyone's abilities, and as an example specifically, how you addressed Leona. You made it a point to say that she had a mental block even though she totally can do it and indeed did it afterwards. Those encouraging words are so so so important and make me believe I can hit those notes too. If you were my teacher and said this to me I would 1000% cry because its so nice to be praised for being brave after being afraid of possibly messing up for so long. I'll speak as a singer myself. I've noticed a lot of the times they show these singers hitting these high notes is on things like live TV you hit those notes there, because it is impressive. Touring is a different beast, you thrive on consistency on tour. It is better to hit a note that is slightly easier to hit that you can do more consistently, than a note that if you hit that every night for two weeks would just kill your throat, and you'd lose your voice barely into a tour. Two totally different environments

Trust me as a singer, I learned the hard way mainly as a metal/punk singer, where you're also go from rough to sometimes oddly operatic tones. When I first played live at 16 I wanted to be Mr. Showoff. I'd hit these massive falsetto notes, that took a lot out of me. I played three shows in a row, and I could not sing correctly due to my throat being done, even throat coat didn't help. I hooked up with my music teacher actually to show me how to hit impressive notes in a live setting without taking the wind out of me.

I’m glad you put these notes you have about singers in technical terms. As a shy shower singer myself, I watch singing shows such as the voice and many other musician-mentor related shows. I notice when singers lose their pitch or try using vowels or other things and such and don’t know how to describe singers’s voices. My grandma usually thinks I’m making fun of them or just being harsh when in reality sometimes the singer just can’t sustain a note and it hurts my feelings because sometimes it can be a songs sweet point!
