I just came back from a session where I helped a 220 lbs middle aged dude to get on a large foil with this tip: The center of gravity is in the hips. So as soon as you feel the lift, move the center of gravity forward and that means the hips. Hips are even more important when you get to foot switches when hips have to be stable and salsa foot work have to happen under them just like in the salsa dance. Nobody is talking about it this way but I find it very helpful.

Well done Papa Light, you did awesome. As an older 50 year old gent, just had first lessons with wing, coming from kiting and kite foiling but looking for something easier and safer to get in and out of water. Finding balancing on board getting started a challenge, however inspired by James. Keep sharing your progress!

The old man is a stud and makes learning look easier than it is. He obviously knows how to sail and is comfortable on a board as the board is only 20L more than his weight. He has a good stance and posture and knows how to position the sail out in front of him. Helps to have the right wing, board and foil setup, strong wind conditions, flat water, and a son chasing him in a boat. For less experienced and athletic types, expect the learning curve to be quite a bit longer. However, the journey is well worth it. I never thought after only 18 months of winging at 52 years old, I would be catching 20x more waves than the local surfers.

just the sort of video we need! I was discussing winging with a frieind yesterday, who opined that we were too old! This would sugest not, i dont know how old James is but I don't feel particularly old at 65! I am a bit bored with sailing and have been toying with getting back into windsurfing but it actually needs a lot of kit even if you rule out doing it in under 14 knots. Apart from the learning curve this looks a lot simpler; I could probably get away with much less kit and sail ina wider wind range. I'm probably a bit bigger than James but ti would be interesting to know weight in realtion to board volume and wing size. Hopefully there will be a progress video

I am 58 years old and weight about 100kg. The board is 120lt so has enough volume for me. You can use the wing as a stabiliser when getting started in chop.

The foil size was 2400 cm2 and wing size 5.5. I really like winging, last year no kite or windsurf sessions anymore only winging! For your weight I would take an even bigger size wing in I think. Maybe 6 or 7 meter. In the beginning it is easier to have enough power. I did not find it easy and enjoyed the learning curve. Have fun!

Didn’t look that easy and it isn’t. I seem to remember Sams first videos LOL. You didn’t seem too impressed in the beginning and that honesty made me watch your other videos. Personally windsurfing (higher end in the surf and with sinker boards) was one of the hardest things I’ve ever loved to learn and do. Kiteboarding even when I started experimenting with it with 2 line foils was always easier, better, more versatile, more ergonomic, and a lot more dangerous than all. I’m a larger older guy now and with all the gear focused on little sized people, it’s a bitch to learn. I had to build my own board to get it done initially. No matter how old or your size, the conditions needed for learning are rare. It’s not an easily accessible activity except for those who already live in a windy low chop area. I may still keep trying but as I get older, accessibility has become very important to me. It’s pretty dang hard to beat my Onewheel to name one. You can also have a blast with a Onewheel and a small wing sail …lol Seems like there’s been so many videos trying to promote this sport. Even Naish will tell you it’s not his ultimate preference. I’m glad you guys are having fun and that’s what it’s all about. I wish I could have done as well with it as you dad. Unfortunately I 15 yrs older, bigger, and I don’t have a spotter in a boat to bail me out.
