During my first day of winging this big ‘ol fella let me ride a 150L (aircraft carrier) with a 5m wing, I was up and riding within an hour. Full disclosure, I came from a kite-foiling background but as you mentioned, the larger equipment minimized frustration and allowed me to get my stoke on.

8:15 glad your buddy didn't lose his drone, we'd have missed out on these awesome shots!! I'm hoping to get started in this sport in the spring, I'll definitely heed your advice about board size, but hope to advance to the same 80L board you have, It looks like a great all-rounder!

MACkiteboarding set me up on a 170L Cabrinha Macro Air inflatable with a Fusion X-series 1950 foil and a 7M Wing. I weigh 90kg. Because of this, I stood on the board and was sailing around on my 1st session. By session 4, I was breaking free of the water and flying short distances. In session 7, last week, I flew 2-300 feet at a time with semi-controlled drops back in. Although I feel like it's been really fun every time I've gone, it seems hard to get that big board to break free of the water. I feel the downside to this big board is that it takes so much power to break free of the water. When you do, it takes off crazy fast. Suddenly, I'm so out of control. It won't be too much longer before the water turns into ice. Likely, I'll have to wait until spring before I try a smaller board.

Excelent advice esp the volume i started big went to 95lts didnt want to vhance less too early and an hppy with the choice wingfoiling reminds me of windsurfing when everyone went way too small too fast and stalled their progression

Where were you when I started Wing Foiling last year!?? My wing foiling journey would have been so much easier! 😳🙄 I cannot agree with you more that when you start to learn wing foiling, you want to use bigger board, bigger foil, & bigger wing than you think you need. Also, regardless how much of a good swimmer you are, it is so much better to wear a life vest as well. I wasted a lot of my time in under power condition since the area I learned to Wing Foil has such a light wing in general. Even for an advanced windsurfer and a low intermediate kitesurfer who understands the wind pretty well like me, a light wind is a light wind. 😥😞 I weigh 74 kg (163 lbs) and started with 2000 cm2 front wing and 123 liter board. Using a 49 liter more than my body weight (123 liter = 74 kg +49 liter) board was a good decision since I had no issue/stress in standing up on a board from the beginning. I am a low intermediate level wing foiler now (I can jibe pretty well, but cannot tack yet) and riding Axis PNG 1150 foil and Reedin 112 Liter Feather Board. Actually, I sometimes ride my friends' 90 liter board by Starboard and Slingshot and no problem riding them, but I am so much more relaxed on my 112 liter board while standing on a board waiting for the gust to foil up. If you are a total beginner and going to learn wing foiling in a light wind condition like me (7-12 knots), I would strongly suggest you to start with at least 40 liter more than your weight board and 2000 cm2 plus front foil with a long fusalage (70 cm plus). You will go through so much less stress and frustration with big enough equipments especially in a low wind area!

Hey Sam, congrats on the new arrival and the dad tash. I'm another Hayling dad looking to start wing foiling. I have the board and foil. I'm 85kg, would you recommend starting with a 6m? How do you rate that Dart wing you did some videos with? Keep up the videos please 🙏

For Beginner WingFoilers I don't mind recommending a board 30 - 50 L more then your weight (Kg). It depends on Athletic ability, Water Conditions (flat vs waves)

Hey Sam! Do you have any recommendations on minimum length of the mast or what I should look for in the back wing? Thanks for the tips.

ahhh the board size quandary! I'm 12 sessions in 95kg. Borrowed a 120L board my first 6-7 times. Borrowed a 110L board 4-5 times. Now trying a 95L board x2 I may buy with a screaming good deal. Went from 25% jibes to maybe 10% as I acclimate, but mostly adjusted quickly- have enjoyed it in 20kt, flat conditions but have concerns about it being too small at this stage in the game when it gets to be lighter wind as it often is here or lumpy ocean conditions. Think a 105L board may be a better all around. What. To. Do.

For a given condition, which combination (hand wing/foil) is easier for newbies: larger hand wing/smaller foil or smaller hand wing/larger foil? Thanks.
@SamLight
@SamLight 2 жыл бұрын
I would recommend a big wing and a big foil for a newby. Big foil is more important as it’s much easier to learn on. Around 2000-2500 surface area for foil and 5m wing in around 20 knots

@@SamLight OK. Sorry that I didn't make my question more clearly. I'm a newbie who is capable of foiling on a consistent basis. My question is the pro and con of the combination of large foil/small hand wing vs small foil/large hand wing. Thanks.

As a non boarder I dont understand how the damn things move across the water like that...whats the propulsion method...the wing is just a sail...the lower board/fin needs pumping...and then what? How does it move forward at Speed!
