Thanks for this, a very meaningful appraisal. You've nicely shown the limitation of that display, I agree it's a shame they didn't allow more of the relevant stuff to be seen. (Comparatively) good price though....just a shame the SD card necessary for my collection would cost way more than the player itself.

I just bought the fiio m5. These kinds of players are very good for iems and for portability. You go to the gym, you take the dog out for a walk. You go to the supermarket. You don't buy this to use it as a dac for your pc or to use your sennheiser hd650 on it.

Really appreciate your concise and well spoken reviews! Do you know if any of the Shanling players, within their particular OS, allow for proper playing of podcast and/or audiobooks??. By that, I mean that it will always resume precisely where one has paused when previously listening to a particular title?? I'm finding it very difficult to find players, even amongst the high end, that can recognize files tagged as podcasts or audiobooks. Sansa has the Sandisk line that is quite affordable and has great podcast compatible software, but they've only disappointed their customers more and more over the years with the hardware end of things. Thanks for any info.

P.S. I was really hoping the Fiio M6 might be good for podcasts, but it seems they've yet to whitelist a suitable app that could be downloaded, and that the factory OS does not recognize podcasts.

Your best bet would be an Android-based player along with a dedicated podcast app. I think FiiO has removed the whitelisted requirement in one of their firmware updates, but you'd still need to manually install the apk for the app.

looks like a bulkier mock-up of an ipod nano 6g, but with bluetooth and sdcard based. even the UI appears to resemble it in a more clumsy way. thanx for the review, as I'm looking for a bluetooth replacement of my nano with degraded battery.

Haven't tried the M3K yet, waiting for FiiO to send stock to Samma3a. As for your question about skipping...when you're on the Now Playing screen, swipe to the left and then you'll see the progress bar, just slide the bar forwards or backwards

I personally prefer(ed) fuller gadgets that felt more laxed in my palm and grip I'm not sure where the thin/small appeal lies but going that route mightve improved on the battery A hardcover silicone case would be an amazing peace of mind for the time being

ANY Shanling with Bluetooth 5.1? I looked but did not find. Me: Newbie,Bought Sennheiser Momentum 2 True Wireless earphones it has Blue Tooth 5.1 Since MP3 players with 5.1 BT are rare & $$$. Was told that I can use MP3 with Blue Tooth 4.2 & Sennheiser 5.1 BT with the SAME audio quality. Biggest negative is no mic. ATM es100 is best portable dac & great value for money with no competition from any manufacturer whatsover. Unfortunately it is not widely available otherwise I would have bought it already.

unfortunately no... i just got em today.... inline controls dont work... probably because the inline controls are designed for android and ios and since m0 uses a completely diff os, it cannot interpret those those signals

Unless the audio circuitry in your phone is really poor, then no, connecting the M0 via BT to your phone to listen to Spotify is highly unlikely to give you an improvement in sound quality.

There isn't a great deal of difference between all of these players, at least not when you take the precaution to properly volume-match them and use headphones/iems that have a stable frequency response across varying output impedances. For the most part, the biggest differences lie with the price and features

​@@steelgtr In that case I'd recommend the M7 over the M0 for you. The M0 does not have a proper line-out function, whereas the M7 does. In case you're unfamiliar with what a line-out feature is...after the audio signal is processed by the DAC circuitry it is passed to the amplification circuitry. In the case of small devices that are meant for headphones the amp section doesn't actually amplify the signal, but rather reduces it instead. As such, the signal level coming from the DAC section is usually much higher than when it leaves the amp section. So when we talk about a line-out function what we mean is that the audio signal is sent to the output directly after the DAC section. This is advantageous because the signal would be "purer" (as it hasn't undergone minor degradation do to the amp circuitry...each bit of circuitry in the single path WILL degrade it even to a small degree). So, in your case it would make more sense to use a device that has a line-out feature (assuming, of course, that your home stereo has a line-in connection).

Should mp3 players really be this expensive? What exactly is it that makes it 100$? If it's the touchscreen and design, I guess it's not really worth it for those who just need a good mp3 player. Well, I can't speak about the sound quality of the N3, but the M0 sounds better to me than the X1 2nd gen. For the price and size there's no player out there currently that can touch it in terms of value and versatility

I think that 100$ is a fair price for this piece of hi tech If you think that is just a music player so you are wrong This amazing little thing is a Hi-res audio player + Bluetooth transmitter support aptx, LDAC+ Bluetooth receiver support LDAC+ portable amplifier + portable DAC all of these features inside one little device If you search for the price of any portable DAC , you will find that 100$ is nearly nothing.

You could stream from your phone to the M0 over Bluetooth... Or you can use a lightning-to-USB-c cable and connect the M0 to your phone. Another option would be a dac/amp like the Fiio q1 Mark II which was specifically made for iOS devices. Otherwise, have a look at the Fiio M6 as that runs android so you can install Spotify on it.

Just a reality check here. Regardless of the quality of your computer equipment, it will not be able to produce anything like the sound from a Shanling M0 or anything similar. You have to put up with the mediocre sound quality that KZbin outputs which isn't that great.
