It's a fair question. Dusk Base probably is not ideally adaptable to some specific forms: in the case of a room diffuser, you do not WANT the large base note molecules (they tend to inhibit diffusion) so it wouldn't necessarily be a great place to start from for that. My own experience with room and linen sprays is that B&B and hotel guests generally do not want a fragrance that cloys to the room all day - so hoteliers would probably prefer a top to mid heavy fragrance that only persists for 60 to 90 minutes after a maid sprays in the room so also not something loaded with base notes like this. The idea is to reassure guests that you've been there and done your job sanitising the room and fluffing things up for them, but then allow them to forget about you easily and to just relax. We would need someone who knows about candlemaking to comment specifically about what candle people want here, tho. I think flammability and burn products are the key considerations, but I'm not an expert on this so I can't comment effectively.

@@RoyalGuardEziode FCO is really the carrier here. DPG IPM BB DEP (or Ethanol) are normally used to dilute individual materials, sometimes because that is the only way to dilute it, or for safety in shipping, or sometimes for economy (very expensive raw materials can be easier to buy as 10% or even 1% dilutions). But when it's time to make the perfume, you simply decide if the overall concentrate will get diluted in Ethanol (spray perfume), FCO, or Jojoba oil (oil-based, roller ball perfume). Does that sound reasonable?

MacerNation RISE UP!!! Bergamot quenching dryness might be the same reason some people (ex Mountain Aromatics) regard bergamot as aquatic. I kinda do too. Things at the triangulation of "citrus", "juicy", and "clean" can give this kind of hydrating aquatic note (as opposed to the drier mineral piny notes of aquatic chemicals like aphermate). Also, do you know of any good resources for finding a bunch of base templates? Especially nature-like accords?

Amber, Vetiver, musk, pink pepper, perhaps a dash of oakmoss... Perfect "clean" body odor smell. I can't explain it, but it's quite loud, and you CANNOT wear it except under very specific circumstances! 😂

Just for my personal interest, as i never made a base before..... if you got your formular perfect in your eyes ( or better nose) and you are going to create a larger amount of the base... the final result will be made of pure materials or still diluted ? And if pure materials, how do you handle solids like vanillin in this case?

No, it’s not as a easy as looking at fragrantica. They analyse it in a lab using a machine called GCMS. A skilled technician can clone perfumes that way.

I really want to try doing this. Ao far here in Kuwait the available raw materials available is actually like for example “aventus creed oil” i mean the essential oil is already pre-mixed or maybe im wrong but what usually people are doing here is just mix this scented oil to perfume alcohol and bang its already a “home made perfume”. This scented oil or i dunno if its the “essential oils” thats why im kind of hesitant to buy and mix

There's nothing wrong with buying a bit of a perfume oil concentrate you like the smell of, diluting it properly and spraying it on skin. But that is not perfume making, it is just reconstitution. Fine perfumery is about becoming the person who knows the materials, can build them into accords and perfume bases, and ultimately constructs a balanced perfume concentrate themselves. You have the choice of following in Rembrandt's footsteps, or filling in a colouring book someone else made for you. If you decide to make original perfume yourself, check out Sam's course ... and start doing all of the study and work required. It's going to take a while - so be prepared.

When you call them "perfume bases" are you saying these are base notes? I see bergamot on one of the formulas and I know that's a top note. Are these accords or are they mini formulas that allow to work on a more complex formulation?

Exactly; in perfumery, confusingly, bases and base notes are completely different. Base notes are the long lasting notes whereas bases are accords with defined proportions, I.e. reproducible base formulas.

I wonder if tapered glass rods with a loop at the top would be a less wasteful alternative to single use plastic pipettes. Because they can be rinsed off and won't absorb scents from your various raw materials, plus they would be pretty and more cost effective in the grand scheme of things. I dunno. Be careful to distinguish between bases (formulas) and base notes (long lasting things). Molecular formula isn’t too important. Cedarwood does evaporate slower than mint. Perfumers use both bases and base notes to create designer fragrances - but you need a lot of skill on top of that

Nope, bases and base notes are different in perfumery. Bases are formulas and base notes are long lasting notes. The two can, but don’t necessarily, overlap

Question, you do dilute the base or not? If you do, do you also dilute the last ingredients that change the smell? If you don't, when do you add the "perfumers alcohol" for example. Embarrassing but for some reason i was thinking no dilution until the end 🤦🏾‍♀️

It’s really up to you, you can dilute at the start of the end. I usually do at the start but not always!
