You will definitely always get the best welds in a controlled scenario. As a welder, I would try to stick some pieces together. Get some random material make a birdhouse. Side projects will help improve those skills. Not every weld needs to be automotive related. Good luck 👍🏼

Make sure your reg shows around 10 when pulling the trigger to ensure enough gas coverage, also clean metal will help you a lot bud, if your doing any work on the body of a car make sure you have someone on fire duty with an airline… trust me it’s a life saver especially with some of the sound deadening/insulation on the inside of panels etc! Top vids bud

Soon as you start hitting any decent boost that AFR went lean af. Since this is an NA engine you should rotate the distributor a few degrees back. NA timing + boost = boom I was hoping you’d keep it automatic 😂 Proper prep helps welding a ton. Be sure to clean up the areas you will be welding

from one Sam to another, as a Kiwi dad with a Chinese wife, who just had our first baby six weeks ago. The doctors induce labour, as the process leading up to the pushing was taking a little bit too long. fortunately it was a natural birth, but a C-section was discussed as it was close to 48 hours before any pushing started. now after six weeks has gone by and after so many new experiences it turned out to be a lot less stressful than I had anticipated. my only advice is just take a deep breath and handle things as best you can, and everything will just work out. it may be too late for you to read this, but I hope you do, ive been a long time fan and I hope to come to Japan and meet you one day. all the best 🎉🎉🎉

As a welder number one rule is to clean your surface as it makes up 80% of the finished product the paint will cause contamination so will look bad and not be as strong apart from that just keep doing as you where small tack leave to cool then tack again it will prevent it blowing through from to much heat

Hey Sam, weld spots on auto -body sheetmetal, stack them in a row like a normal bead but wait between spots or use an air blower/wet rag to keep the metal cool. The perfect weld on sheetmetal looks the same underneath as it does from above. About 16v is what I run and about 3.5 meters per minute on wire speed.
@guyslifee3215
@guyslifee3215 Жыл бұрын
using something to cool it down is a bad idea, it hardens the steel and also shrinks it causing more warping. some tacks 20mm apart then wait for the panel to cool then one continuous pulse weld is the best way to manage heat. keeps the heat band equal for the whole weld and it wont be super hard compared to the steel you welded
@EXZACHTPERFORMANCE
@EXZACHTPERFORMANCE Жыл бұрын
@@guyslifee3215 in a perfect world yes, but when you are trying to restore a 40k car without it costing 100k you don't have time to wait for things to cool, you just make sure to not build enough heat to let it warp, cool frequently. Space tacks and stack a spot on each one in the same direction until there is no gap if you get good you can have an air blower in one hand and a mig torch in the other and go hard lol, in theory 1 weld is ideal always yeah but try and weld a quarter panel onto a 70s car or a floor in with 1 weld. The slightest mistake and you create a hole or spread heat and now your door won't gap up correctly and neither will the bumper or trunk/boot. Spots are safe you can manage penetration and heat with minimal risk, I work in a Resto shop it's literally how 6 figure restos are done
@guyslifee3215
@guyslifee3215 Жыл бұрын
@Zach Hart never cool it, it takes longer to do small welds and cool it down. You literally tack it go do something else on the car for 5 minute (have a cleanup) come back and knock the top of the tacks off and run a full pulse weld. Pack everything up and it's good to grind back and file up It literally makes the finishing process way longer cooling it and jumping around the panel welding it

I am in school to get a degree (AS) in welding. i have also working in the industry for years. if a welder can stick weld (SMAW), then it can also tig (GTAW). when mig welding it helps ALOT to weave the torch in a wave pattern. others use a C pattern or zig zag. also torch angle is important, it needs to maintain roughly a 45 degree angle to the weld. along with it tilled to the right. also with mig in general when doing a flat weld, you want to drag/pull the weld rather than pushing the weld. welding something as thin as a fender is kinda difficult. some of your welds looked cold but while still having heated and (it appears) to have warped the metal a bit. this is an area i dont really get into alot. but when i have needed to weld thin metal, i do it in shortish tacs and just tac the seem closed. while jumping around to different points on the seem to try and let the metal to heat and cool evenly. along with a wet/damp rag to use to cool the weld, n try to limit the heat from soaking into the work piece. if you plan on doing thin metal, i.e like a fender, than you may want to get a thinner wire either .023 or .024 inch (idk if its called something diff in other countries)

Hi Sam. Mick from Redcliffe. Mate cut the charge air pipe at the top right through the weld where the dark spot is. Twist it down and it will plumb up without most of the passenger side pipe. Redo an exhaust with your new mig and you could shut the bonnet.

1 - clean your metal, 2- get torch closer to work, also wire speed needs adjustment and maybe more amps ( but prolly more so due to how far you are from work) .125 thickness metal = 125 amps approx. to start off.. id prolly lean toward 120 tho. but you can adjust from there.

Definitely weld in a more open area for sparks like that and also in safe clothing, you will find burn holes in all your favorite shirts. Cleaning the surface area like you already did. Bare metal will always weld better. Your beads are looking great though,

I used to do sheet metal work back in the day in Brissy The precise measuring device you pulled out was a vernier, never knew how to read them haha that was before the digital read. Also probably not a good idea welding next to all those pressure cans/chemicals and the shop walls timber framing. Welding seems allg, maybe a touch down on the wire speed. Enjoying the content 🤙🏽

Weldings fine. Wire speed intially was a bit fast but u sorted it by the looks, yeh had figured that out by the end. If its spatting hard when u weld, ur wire speed is up. U wana bring it down. The colder u can weld panel steel the better. 70 80 were u had it is fine. If its exterior panel u wana sort of spot weld it very slowly, let each of them cool. Its very hard to be patient. It requires a tonne of patience cos it warps so much. Spot zinc, weld thru, is great product. Especially copper weld thru, its more conductive. Great job man SAVE THE EVO!!! Haha Roof cut and few other parts from donor. Lancer mr etc be the same. P.s never weld thru paint, umless u absolutely had too. Clean metal surface always haha

Those 2 welds are good. Keep the amps and turn wire speed up a hair. Make sure you give yourself about 3/4” stick out of wire from the nozzle to the piece your welding. Stick out is very important, doesn’t matter if you have right amperage you’ll burn thru if you don’t pay attention to the stick out and are too close. Hmu if you have questions I’m a certified welder.

Give you some welding tips You're going backwards. Point the torch in the opposite direction Get yourself a fire extinguisher And bucket of water Don't burn a car to the ground. It happens more than you think. Try going slower. Turn the machine down. Any thin material try and weld vertical down. Don't try and do it in one go. Try nice little tack and lay another nice little tack over the first and so forth. When you get better you can go taster

You should try exploring the limits of that auto gearbox. It may surprise you. Power mode holds the gears a little longer and it will downshift a little quicker. It is an attempt to make the car feel a bit more fun. Its interesting to see what things are called around the world. Its Bog in Australia and Bondo in the US. My cousin had to tell a fellow Puerto Rican that on the mainland it's called a spoiler. The poor fellow was getting strange looks when he translated the slang word (mata perro: dog killer) for it back home. The welds look good but please work in an area with no flammable materials. Also protect yourself too. Hope all works out well for you and May with the baby.

When welding sheet metal you need to control the heat otherwise you'll blow through. Firstly set your welder to the lowest ampage it will do. Secondly use .23 wire as thinner wire requires less heat. Don't use flux core as that requires more heat and you get s l a g everywhere. Don't run beads as you'll quickly create too much heat and blow through. Instead you need to do tack welds and distribute them, let it cool then do more tack welds to fill in the gaps. It's about taking your time. Also if you're adding patches use 18 gauge (1.2) steel as a minimum thickness. Go watch Fitzees Fabrications and Bad Chad for how to weld sheet metal.
