When I was about 11 yrs old Sammy and Altovise were in a huge Caddy on the fwy in Sacramento. I asked my mom to pull up alongside so I could wave. They both waved back to a little 11 year old girl with big smiles on their faces. I loved that couple! Sammy was a gem.

@jackwilloughby239
@jackwilloughby239 Жыл бұрын
I was gonna open by saying: "Puts to Rest the idea that Buddy Rich was the Greatest Drummer Ever". Why? Musicality, Tone, Touch. The funny thing is Fred Astaire exhibits the same qualities in the vid of him drumming on the Drum Set he kept in his Bedroom. My friends that play drums always insisted that Ed O'Shaughnessy of the Tonight Show was a better drummer than Buddy. I'd pick Roy Haynes, Art Blakey, Louis Bellson and Elvin Jones. But the guys who played with Bill Evans? I forget which one it was, but for his audition with Bill he came in and sat down at the piano and played every one of Bill's pieces On the Piano! A drummer who can do that could obviously be working as a Pianist. Bill hired him on the Spot. Another great drummer: Joe Morrello started on violin at the age of 6 and debuted with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at age 9 playing the Mendelsohn Violin Concerto which he reprised a few years later, so it wasn't a One Off. He quit violin and switched to drums because he thought he could never be as good as Heifetz. Did Buddy ever play any other instrument? Could he dance or sing? Much like Paganini his Forte was Self Promotion.@@watsonira7

Good God Almighty,l never knew that Sammy was so multitalented. God really blessed, this man. This is the first time that l have seen him play the drums and the piano. He was astounding. I thought he only sang and tap-danced. Very gifted man. My father loved his music. This is 2018.

Don't be so stupid and offensive as to let the charts and radio dictate your view on Musicians these days or ever. Go support some local artists and you'll see professionalism in droves. Ok?

People open their mouth and crow like a cock and win Grammies. smh! Just look at real talent. People back then, the way they spoke, sang, danced, entertained was exceptional. It will never happen again. Except MJ. Lol

The three of them are talented. Dino's Vibrato. Frank's impeccable reach of high and low tones that not many can do or reach even 50 years later. Sammy's all around-the-clock. All unique in their own ways.

To say twice as good implies "they" were good to begin with. He had raw talent, never had to be trained. What we do , we pioneer,, we do not copy them, it is the other way around.

What a brilliant, brilliant talent! I seriously ask if there was anything he could not do? Sing, dance, tap, do impersonations, play drums, twirl pistols, act in both drama and comedy, tell jokes and stories, ad lib, improvisation, play piano and all with such an obviously generous heart, exuding breathtaking energy and world class ability. A generation is lucky to have one talent like that - I think he warrants a century. Thank you for this salute to Sammy.

Sammy was a great drummer and of course great all around performer. He had Buddy Rich and his big band back him on an album in 1966 soon after Buddy had formed the band. I see when he played piano he did it like i've seen a lot of vibes players do it with basically two fingers ( Terry Gibbs, Lionel Hampton ).
