Your voice is nothing less than amazing. It has every last bit of power and punch as it did three or four decades ago. You are living proof that good vocal discipline and daily practice is key to maintaining peak performance throughout the years. The proof really **is** in the singing! Maybe Sammy can't drive 55 but he (and you) can sing your socks off well past 55!

Sammy Hagar is still out there doing his thing after all these years! My favourite solo song of his is I Can't Drive 55, and his work with Van Halen is his best overall because his voice possessed something that DLR's didn't -- crazy range and versatility!

Hagar is one of those guys who really refined his abilities in a lot of ways. He wasn't in Van Halen until his mid-30s, and had some killer performances. The three times I've seen him, he was older than I am now and had really solid performances. And yeah, that 'Highway Star' performance is fantastic....

Wait, Sammy isn't trained as a singer?! Damn. I've been a fan of his for years and I just always assumed he'd had vocal training or lessons. Has that been the case throughout his career? Or did he learn how to maintain it? He's up there with Steven Tyler imo for guys who still sound basically the same. It's not just that he still sounds great, he still delivers 110% every performance. Which, I mean, even if you don't nail it 100%, you still feel that extra 110% delivery and its exciting as a fan!

@@l.t.w8985 Might have to check that out! I know bits and pieces of Sammys life stories just based on being a VH fan for years. Honestly, I always kinda preferred Sammy in VH. DLR was a great front man, they also wrote great rock songs with him, but I felt Sammy gave them more options in terms of the music. Maybe Eddie got better at songwriting over time. But the Hagar era felt like a more advanced/accomplished band. + DLR was always hectic live. Forgot words, long rambling rants. That's not to say I don't love the DLR era! They were both phenomenal bands. Just from a purely music based perspective, I feel DLR limited them, while Hagar pushed them past their limits.

..I tend to think Sammy's voice was at it's peak during his Van Halen years..if anything, I think it was at it's peak during the last half of his tenure..from around 1991-1995-6, I think...just listen to just about anything from Unlawful Carnal Knowledge...and "Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do" from Balance...or even "Humans Being" from the Twister soundtrack..of course, it doesn't hurt to have Michael Anthony helping you out, too..both then and now :) ..but, as comparison, DLR voice was already about shot by that time period(not that it was ever great to begin with)...not anything to do with Sammy, but I saw a recent live performance of Kenny Loggins online somewhere..amazing!..he really sounded impressive for his age...

For his age and all the years still rocks it. Having Mike from VH he too is still singing well and hey its always great to have someone in your band that can kick it with harmonizing. Hmmm, now Ken, I do know that your cousin has a great eye for his fashion style something else that must run in your family . You wear the greatest shirts. Back in your concerts days you to wore it well. I wish that Sammy could write at least one more hit. I always said Van Halen would of never of lasted or peaked in the heights that they did once Sammy came aboard. If you ask me there had been no greater writers in Van Halen. I guess that's why it was a huge stipulation in the Van Halen contract to each singer they auditioned which again was to write songs . It certainly showed once Gary Cherone joined the group . I always said it had been sad and exstreemly embarrassing how Van Halen brothers actually ended. I also felt bad for Gary I've known him and worked with him for a good 10 yrs and Boston wasn't going to fit well with Halen brothers. Although Eddie did take some fashion tweaks of ours LOL- poor Gary didn't have a chance with those guys. It's never easy joining a band that has started having issues with members and all of the bullcrap that comes with egotistic behavior. I am not afraid to say it as I see it. The money Van Halen made SINCERELY came from Sammy's creative mind . When Sammy first got with the brothers and Mike it was all fun but Sammy did what he had to do and that was wait to become one with the guys and once he did omg that album sored Jump I can still hear that song. Hits kept coming . All that cake wouldn't of been made if it hadn't been for your cousin. I know he has one more huge hit in that heart & mind of his and I'm waiting with many others. There having fun now good for them all. A book that seriously couldn't tell all truths you know it. I got to check out Kayla doing 55 .. Blessings always Ken and all here enjoying your work and everyone who is in the Templin arena...Peace Out!!!✌💜🙏🏻👍😊

Yeah Ken, once again, Im noticing the same comparative nuainces HERE , I did with Elton... The vocal timbre having more DEPTH, (some due to lower key) but the quality is still there. Yeah with Sammy, the NOW clips had the harmony at the same level as He, so it was alittle hard to tell how his notes truly came out, but like you were sayin , "all things considered", He's still KILLIN IT. Yeah Ken, just in the 4 yrs Ive been here, YOUR vocal has more depth now, more refined, full bodied, less strained even, especially on the "vocal dist/overdrive" phrasing's. Your speaking voice has gotten lower as well.😎

He's not a lead singer by any means but to be up that high after all this time is still pretty incredible. There are numerous clips of Hagar struggling mightily these days. It's common knowledge - not a big deal. He hung on for a long time and he possesses one of the best tones I've ever heard.

You bring up so really great points---how some singers push their voices more than others, about some having better voices later in life, some of voices going downhill. In the case of yourself you brought up that you feel your voice is better now than when you were younger. Not surprising in your case given how you have talked about how you have over your life learned so much about the voice---and put it to practice. Obviously all the knowledge in the world doesn't help if you don't put it into use. Thanks for looking at Sammy, really good video!

I heard Randy and Russell in recent years and they sound very similar to their younger days. Russell even runs around the stage at age 73. Sammy is very active on stage and still has it. In those old days, there were no tutorials how to sing rock. still in the 80s, you went to a library and got yourself books, that only wanted to teach you bell canto. Helpful maybe, but not a word about some healthy distorted sounds. Instead pages and pages describing a beautiful voice without any word how to actually use it. at that time singers had to figure it out by themselfes. And they even hit or missed. Those we still hear about are the survivers.
